Great video. I knew I had some hearing loss, but realized exactly how much lip reading i was actually doing when covid forced people into masks. I went to my ENT office, got tested, and now have bilateral hearing aids. The biggest issue I've found with them is the amount of sounds that I can now hear often causes anxiety, and puts me in to sensory overload forcing me to remove them when in high noise areas.

Thanks Dr Cliff for a great video and greetings from Scotland. I am quite late to hearing aids given that I have moderate to severe hearing loss. I am getting on really well with my hearing treatment though and was at my Audiologist for a review(despite the lockdown) and after seeing this I got him to go through my hearing test a few months ago. That was amazing explanation! I have had troubles with word recognition for most of my adult life. I just had hearing test yesterday and they were quick to sell me hearing aids but did not cover any of what you spoke of in this video. I will ask for my test results and perhaps have them do the word recognition as well.

I got my first aids, Rexton Cobolt 16 's 10 years ago. No longer serviced by Costco... New ReSound GN, Costco 1 1/2 year ago. My word recognition has declined, and I am having difficulty getting a proper adjustment for word recognition. The last "real ear" test which seemed to have been carefully done, was just strange, wildly off what would be expected. Was not used.. Due to the covid situation, testing is limited. I need to get properly adjusted for high freq, and volume. This video is another of your best, thanks.

Very interesting and informative. In the case explained for the right ear, at about 5.52 into the video, you show consonants to the right which the individual cannot hear. But there are many similar consonants grouped with the vowels on the left, which the individual can hear. Is that a common grouping for “can’t” and “can” hear sounds or was it particular to the case you chose to use in the example?

Wow! Great educational video. While you were teaching us I had my Audiogram in front of me and now know what THR BC means as well as how WRS all play into how HAs can benefit my loss if fitted correctly using best practices. My Audiogram also has WRS1 score and score number as well. The WRS1 shows 65 whereas the score shows 96 on my Binaural/Dichotic chart. Same for my other ear. Not sure why the difference?

65 was more likely the dB presentation level and 96 was the percentage correct.

Hey Cliff, Have you ever tried or looked into the Inventis Audiometric suite? Would highly recommend you look into them as I absolutely love the Cello, Flute and Trumpet. I use all three of them every single day in my practice. My only complaint is that PTA is not displayed on the print out report or in the software at this time but could very likely be updated in the near future.

Please, Dr. Cliff - I have what is considered a Mild hearing loss (in the High Frequency range) and terrible Tinnitus which is accompanied by Hyperacusis which oddly enough seems exacerbated on certain days, and seems to almost 'coincide' with my Tinnitus - which, on certain days (like today) is just awful, a constant, annoying "hissing and sizzling" sound and on those days, I "hear" certain voices with an edge of distortion and I'm acutely aware of certain every day sounds that to most people, wouldn't be annoying. I am very discouraged, as nothing seems to help me. I have tried an ample amount of supplements (meh....they don't seem to do much) and I try using ear plugs (I work in a fairly loud medication Hood mixing and preparing medications for patients) and I certainly can't enjoy the one thing I always loved (music) the way I used to. It may seem strange, but I have good days and bad days of Tinnitus and Hyperacusis and have even had episodes of diplacusis - do most of us have different levels of hearing in each ear? Is it possible that one ear hears sounds with more "treble" while the other "hears" a bit more accurately? Both my parents wore hearing aids in their later years - what role does Genetics play in hearing loss? I am sorry for all the questions, but all my ENT doctor told me is that I have some loss in the High frequency areas but I feel I am suffering more than people can imagine. ANY information you can provide would be tremendously appreciated - thank you -

There was a hreaing test tthat I had where I was told that I needed a behind the ear hearing aid and a doctor telling me my hearing was not good. Got a second test then they explained it in much more meaningful way while also absolutely being confused completely with the results from the first test/doctor and also about how they said they needed to treat me. When the later test that took place at the university clinic contained 45 minutes of testing compared to 5 at the first, fairly confident that the test that they did only was the beep. Just wondering whether you also have an opinion as to whether not only the word recognition scores but also the sin test too demonstrates benefit behind how successful hearing treatment turns out to be

Yes, a Speech in Noise test is required to determine how well you should expect to hear in background noise. I have other videos explaining the Quick SIN test.

Hi Doc! Why is that pure tone audiometry test is only up to 8,000 hertz. Why is 10,000 to 12,000 hertz is not included? Thank you

Sometimes it is. We can test up to 20,000 Hz. The problem in most cases is that even if you test out to 20,000, you will not likely get enough bandwidth out of a hearing aid to treat it, no matter how much marketing you see from product companies about extended HF bandwidth.

Aural Rehabilitation may help a bit. This is a form of auditory training to help processing ability. Also, it is of high priority to ensure that her hearing aids are meeting her prescription as verified by Real Ear Measurement. If the scores are REALLY bad, she may need to have a Cochlear Implant Evaluation.

Only hearing losses that can be corrected should be corrected. There is literature that suggests hearing aids with minimal amplification can provide benefit for individuals who do not show significant levels of loss. There is also auditory processing disorder and treatment.

Yes but I had two different result the audiologist said I may have Audio processing disorder , but another said that I have noise induced hearing loss . It is what it is so i am not too worried I suppose , but i am more conscious of my volumes

Typically a SSHL in one ear does not have a direct impact on the other ear, but I have seen it happen. That being said, being very cautious in background noise is very important because it is the one way to effectively prevent additional hearing loss in the better ear. Sometimes, a cochlear implant can be used on the SSHL side to get some hearing back as well.
