Presbyopia here. My glasses are now +2.75! I’m trying something new that is exciting. Please consider doing a video on this topic. I wear one +2.5 Alcon Daily contact on my left eye to correct. Took some getting used to the whole contact lens wearing thing, and a little headache and eye fatigue but I’m adjusting. Is there a lasix surgery that can permanently make this correction? Would you suggest it? I’m enjoying your videos and learning a lot. Thank you. -Hilary

I have high myopia: -7.00 on the right and -6.50 on the left, as well as a little bit of astigmatism. I've been wearing glasses since age 9 and have primarily worn contact lenses since age 11 (I'm currently 17). I’m nearsighted, need my glasses for watching TV, driving or shopping. But can see really well close up to read, computer work and crocheting. At my recent eye exam I had my script written to accommodate this. The distance correction through the top of the lenses, the lower with no correction to see close up. Getting use to the transition still, so far so good 🤓👍🏻

I'm farsighted (I wear contacts), so this video was really interesting to me! I'm currently living in South Korea. Fun fact: you might be surprised to find out that hyperopia is extremely rare among the Korean population; and as a result, many opticians here really aren't able to accurately prescribe for it at all. I was given prescriptions between +0.25 and +2.75 by various eye doctors last time I needed a check-up, and was even told by two different opticians that I have presbyopia. I have had glasses for farsightedness since I was 14! I've entirely given up now and just get my eyes tested when I visit my family back home! 🤣

Hey! I’ve worked in the optical industry for 7+ years. My sister who is 17 has a -8.00-2 so basically -10 combined and I’ve only heard about myopia control in the last couple years. I guess it’s been around but had very little info, I wish this was known to me as well for my sister but now that she is a bit older it’s harder to correct. I have recently fit kids with the glasses / contacts - they are much pricier than normal lenses so if your local optician is only interested in making $$ they’d be interested in this as well

I have been so confused about what exactly is going on with my eyes since starting to wear glasses so very much appreciate your clear and straightforward manner of explaining. I was told I needed glasses for reading and my computer work. So that is all I wore them for! Then I started getting tired eyes when taking them off. Went to my eye doctor who retested me and said my prescription had changed so got me different lenses. Man did I struggle with those!!! Like being in a fishbowl!!! Went back to my eye doctor who asked me if I had been wearing my first glasses all the time. I said no, just reading and computer. I said I didn't think I was meant to wear reading glasses outwith those times....to which she told me they are not reading glasses, you have a distance issue!!! This blew my mind as I have 20/20 vision (she checked) so clearly something is going on. She told me, "eyes are complicated!" I am now considering contacts for full time wear and your series on those is super helpful. Thank you.

This gave me such a better understanding of my little brothers prescription! He is pretty farsighted with an astigmatism and it’s insane that he basically had to learn how to look again without using his crystalline lens as such a crutch. He basically had to re learn how to write his letters because he (from what his ophthalmologist told us) basically learned from muscle memory and never fully grasped the way letters looked. It’s interesting to see how wearing glasses has bettered his life 😁. I too am getting glasses soon (Im slightly nearsighted so only I need them to drive and correct my astigmatism)
@nabranestwistypuzzler7019
@nabranestwistypuzzler7019 Жыл бұрын
Yeah definitely don’t wear them up close & try wearing them as little as possible. You should probably also drop the cyl (astigmatism) all together if it’s less than a diopter especially because you don’t want to be down to the final diopter of myopia (or starting, so just eliminate it and don’t worsen it) with something cumplicated like cyl or different eye strengths. Also, just learn active focusing and endmyopia and do it. You probably just have pseudomyopia rn anyways, so your ciliary muscle is in up close mode from looking up close too much, so go outside, practice distance vision, do active focusing, etc.

I always wondered why my weak far-sighted prescription makes such a huge difference in relieving eyestrain and yet I still see fairly well without them? I guess it helps those muscles to relax a little? If I have a sph of +0.50 but a cyl. of -0.75 x 145 - am I still considered hyperopic in that eye?

Well you would technically have what is called mixed hyperopic astigmatism. Not too common. The spherical equivalent is almost Plano. But I would say yes, you are just very slightly hyperopic.

thanks for explaining farsightedness! I've always been frustrated because my vision was excellent, yet I needed glasses. At one time, my right eye was 20/15. I figured since I could see so well, that I'd be a good candidate for eye surgery. Was told by a doctor that some doctors might let me do it, but that I should probably never get it done because my cornea is too thin. Wasn't too concerned, except now that I'm older (36), my vision seems to be getting worse quicker. I assume it is due to the lens growing :(

One day I was driving at night in the rain and began having a panic attack thinking I was losing my vision or something because everything was at its worst I’ve ever seen. Went to an eye doctor and turned out I have Astigmatism and a bit Farsighted. Crazy how mild my prescription is but I have trouble seeing words on my phone or subtitles or sometimes even people’s faces. So I just keep my glasses on all day. School nurse eye screening does not catch hyperopia, see a proper eye professional. Might have done better in school if I had been caught earlier. That would be a good idea. High amounts of farsightedness means the eyeball is small and essentially the eyes powers are not strong enough. At a young age, kids can try to flex their eye muscles and accommodate through it but when the power is more than +3.00 it can start to force the eyes to turn together. Often putting kids at risk of strabismus and amblyopia(lazy eye). Thank goodness they caught it when you were so young. As hyperopes age, the lens inside the eye grows and because the eye is small, there is a risk for angle closure glaucoma.

I am 35 years old now, and my prescription has dropped from -1.75 to -0.75. (I also have a lazy eye which is worse, but it has also improved). When I was younger I also found it impossible to get stereoscopic vision effect cause of my lazy eye, my brain just discarded the information from that eye. That all sounds amazing! Pretty unusual. Why was the "lazy eye" lazy? Was it due to refractive means or due to an eye turn? There are many factors involved in determining the prescription and honestly without knowing your exact eye health and history I dont think I could fully elucidate the changes you have experienced. There are actually great reports improvement in eye teaming and stereoscopic abilities, particularly with vision therapy.

I'm nearsighted. Not sure by how much since I can't really get it checked, let alone get glasses, but it's still fine for the most part. Things farther away than 6-8 feet tend to blurry, but not super blurry. Like, if I was looking at a TV screen with text at that sort of distance, as long as it's say a presentation that at least follows the 7x7 rule, I can read it perfectly fine. But if it's at that distance and the text is quite small, like if you put two paragraphs, I can have a hard time. If it's five paragraphs, I'd have to try and *really* focus my eyes, or simply go closer in a bunch of cases (especially at school during recitation). Also, if say if I'm at a mass, a school program, or a concert, I can't really make out the face of the person talking unless I'm in the first 10 rows. Also, just by closing either of my eyes, I can kinda tell that my left eye is blurrier than my right eye, but I'm not quite sure.

Another excellent and highly educational video, dr. Allen. As a myopic viewer, I really appreciate it. I have an off-topic question. Do you know or think if there is or could be a connection between allergic conjunctivitis and eye floaters formation? I am asking because I have acari allergy and I had runny nose and red itchy watery eyes which resolved on their own. This happened several times for short time intervals (about 15 minutes). I just wondered if this condition could be a cause of my floaters besides the natural aging of the eyes. I am going to visit allergologist, whom I have previously gone to, and treat my chronic nasal congestion which makes sleeping difficult (I even thought I had sleep apnea, sinusitis, or problem with the nasal barrier but I went to otorhinolaryngologist and he said everything is fine). However, I am curious how bad can allergies can affect our eyes. I am sorry if I bore you with my story. Best regards, Momchil

I got farsight recently after being online daily. It's not important how I feel but what I'm planning to do about it. First, cut off sugar, and social media. That's what I suspect will help

So I was wondering if you could explain accommodation issues? I’ve been told I am farsighted and that the muscles of my eyes over tighten and over relax causing a delay in my vision. I can see without my glasses it just takes about 30 seconds for my eyesight to switch between distances, my glasses just help stop that delay. Does this make sense? Hoping you could explain it better. Thanks!

Everything you said makes perfect sense. When someone is farsighted they have to use their eye muscles inside the eye to flex the crystalline lens to focus light for them. However, this can put strain on the eye muscles. Some people naturally have difficulty engaging these muscles and we call that accommodative insufficiency. At a young age (below 40) the coordination between the brain and the eye muscles can be trained through vision therapy, however at we age the crystalline lens gets thicker and eventually starts to crystallize and harden, as this happens, the ability to focus becomes more difficult and can cause a lag in the ability to focus at different distances. Eventually leading to the total loss of accommodative ability. Thats when people start wearing bifocals/reading glasses etc. How old are you now?
