This is the best I've seen at showing examples of what Astigmatism looks like in the real world. The ghosting of letters (especially on a digital screen) is spot on!

I wish I had known this about ten years ago. They gave me glasses with a high axis, and I could not wear the glasses due to the severe ghosting, but they told me the glasses were fine, that the axis shouldn't make a difference. And I paid a lot for the glasses. In later prescriptions the axis was lower, and I could see well out of them.

Thank you Dr. Allen. I have astigmatism and had the cataract astigmatism correction, but still needed glasses. Now I understand the reason for still needing those glasses. Everyone I know, had their cataract surgery and don’t need glasses so I was very upset to find out I need glasses. I watch all of your videos and they’ve been very helpful

I was told I had astigmatism when I was 8 years old but I had 20/20 vision until I was in my mid 30’s. I got glasses when I was 37 and it was mind blowing. I could see blades of grass and single leaves on a tree. I thought I could see until I put those glasses on.

@DoctorEyeHealth
@DoctorEyeHealth Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I appreciate that. Peripheral defocus is not a new concept. There are some very fascinating ideas around different levels of defocus hitting on the superior retina vs the inferior and how that influences eye growth. I hope to have several videos this fall on Myopia and the theories. As far as TBI rehab, part of my residency at the VA included TBI rehab, so I have some experience with it. I was able to see many patients improve with vision therapy protocols.

Thank you for your efforts in sharing this information. I have had bilateral astigmatism with keratoconus for most of my life and have tried glasses, soft lenses, combo lenses, and RGP lenses none being fully successful in correcting my vision. I have been told by my doctors that I am not a candidate for lasik that is available in the states and I will need a cornea transplant eventually. This video's examples were pretty accurate of my vision and have helped me to understand what is going on and also what types of treatment to look into that I was not aware of, THANK YOU!

This was so much more helpful than all the other material I'd read or even been told (ie, your eye is egg-shaped instead of round/youreye is too big🙄)➡thanks very much for this espec since I can imagine it took lots of time & energy to put it together!!

Try reading glasses! I just finished making a hand sewn 1183 style dress ( the hem was 13 feet around), using my reading glasses. No eye strain at all. I have worn progressive lenses, but hated having to move my head to keep things in focus, so I went back to my trifocals.

The genetic component is interesting. I recently got diagnosed with an astigmatism at age 26. I have Native American ancestry on both sides of my family. I’ve always said that my dad’s side had strong Native genes as my eyes will squint a lot when I smile or laugh to the point that they almost disappeared. I’ve even been asked if I have Asian ancestry because of my eyes. So it kinda makes sense to me. Although no one has told me what type of an astigmatism I got. I do need to visit the optometrist soon.

I have astigmatism in one eye. The same eye that has a strangely shaped optic nerve. When I don’t wear my bifocals, everything looks super short, and I feel like a giant. I also get side-to-side ghosting. My son inherited it from me, but his makes everything look fatter and wider.

I went from both eyes being slightly far nearsighted to suddenly having Astigmatism . My friend had that for as long as I knew him but I never thought anyone with pretty normal eyes would suddenly get that without any injury or anything causing it. Obviously I knew nothing about Astigmatism . I first noticed something was wrong when I could not read my pill bottles. So I went to see the eye doctor and found out that I now have Astigmatism . Mine is side by side but also a little angle. Driving at night and during rain is hell for me and bright lights on cars.

Thank you. I did find the videos discussing "what are cataracts & what causes them" and the video about "what steps to take before & after surgery." They were very helpful. I don't mind having to wear glasses after surgery, if I have to, I just want my eye to come out of the surgery as healthy as possible & don't want to spend money on a lens to correct astigmatism "if" the lens really does not benefit me at all. If a specialized lens will benefit me, & I still have to wear glasses, then I am okay with that. I just want to know all the "ifs," "ands," or "buts," so I can make the most informed decision. `i can't be the only person in baby boomer generation facing with this decision.

I have had astigmatism since I was 11 years old. When I had cataract surgery, I was told I wouldn’t need glasses any more. Wrong, still needed glasses, and just now I realized it was probably because of my astigmatism. Recently got new trifocals (I am 80 years young now) and love them. Got home recently from a 2600 mile solo road trip, and made sure my reading glasses came with me, as I can’t use my trifocals to read close up for more than 30 seconds without eyestrain. But having the two sets of glasses, makes my life great. Thank you for the info on astigmatism, I learned a lot today.

I went to USZ - Universitätsspital Zürich: Zurich hospital which is a university hospital with severe eye blurriness. I demanded lasik and the very elderly professor refused to do any work on my eye- he said vision problems were the result of neurological issues of the brain not adjusting to the change in image and reforming the image no matter the deformity of cornea. At age 80 he wore no glasses and was still an ophthalmologist surgeon. I had one exercise to do daily every day- hold a pin, or sharp pencil, or a hair as close to my eyes as possible (in front of nose) where I could still focus well on it - then slowly moving the small object away, always maintaining focus. Then return the object to in front of nose as close as still in focus. Do this for ten minutes. The other contraption was 500-20000mL soda bottle cap with a pin-hole made in It (by a heated up unbent paper-clip- the surgeon still smoked a pipe). I had to use this pinhole bottle-cap monocle all day: a piece of cardboard with a pin-hole punched in- I had to "wear" that single hole spectacle all day. My vision is now 20-20 from hypermy tropia and astigmatism- I also suffered trauma to eyes from chemical burns and strikes with wood and metal. Never had retina damage, thank God, and always wore safety welding glasses (no the safety "squint" and turn away as you spot in a tacking weld). People forget the brain interprets what the eye sees- sometimes part of vision correction si- i.e. corneal input and tomogrpahy.t

Yet another question coming your way! I have pronounced astigmatism in my left eye. The last perscription I got is perfect for the right eye, but the left is still blurry. I was told that "the eyes are supposed to work together" and that the blurriness was acceptable. I worry that I wouldn't pass a driving vision test if made to cover my right eye and read tiny letters -- my state allows for only one mistake when they make you re-take the eye exam. Do I have any recourse? Should I go to a different eye clinic?

I wouldn't say my vision is blurry, but the ghosting illustration is fairly accurate, especially on high contrast (black on white) but less on softer contrast type. Also driving at night is challenging for sure. Can the astigmatism change hour to hour? I just got my first glasses and they are for a newly diagnosed astigmatism, I use them for driving, but I don't need them every day and sometimes they are absolutely necessary! Also sometimes I NEED reading glasses, but other days I can still read even tiny type very clearly. (I am 52)

I have astigmatism & glasses have taken care of it. However I had ocular migraines for many years with usually only mild headaches. Now it’s progressed to hemiplegic migraines with aura & only mild headaches but all the symptoms of stroke. I have aura several times daily, drooping mouth on right side, sometimes it gets worse & goes into paralysis on entire right side then in really bad attacks it spreads to left side. Slurred speech & sometimes can’t speak @ all. On one occasion it progressed to a hemiplegic migraine stroke. Very rare I was told. Gave me clot buster drugs. I recovered but have permanent droop on right side of mouth & short term memory deficits. Still have 2 to 4 attacks daily but with meds they are not as often severe.

You briefly mentioned the astigmatism at the surface of the lense vs at the back of the lense, and I'd like to hear more about this. They keep telling me they won't measure how much of which I have until the day of surgery, but I'd like to know to help determine the best solution. (Note: I've been to several surgeons including Moran Eye Center in Utah, and nobody has ever talked about these different details, despite me trying and trying to get more info.)

I definitely have the "ghosting" effect (up and down), I don't notice long streaks of light though. Usually light sources are multiple round fuzzy balls (I also have myopia) that can be slightly oval shaped. One of my oldest prescription from when I was a kid only had -0.50D of cylinder but today it's -2.00D CYL. I wore contacts from ~2005-2008 and they were of the soft type. There was no dash on them so I assume they only were spherical ones. They were pretty small too and was monthly contacts (so I just put them back into the plastic container with the solution and the next morning I cleaned them off with a new solution from the bottle). It was pretty pricy iirc, ~$100 a month or so (my memory might be failing me, unsure if they came with one or multiple packages). Sometimes after extended periods of use it was difficult to take them out and occasionally I accidentally touched my eyeball directly thinking I had contacts in when I didn't. My speculation why my astigmatism got worse is I might have caused "wear and tear" of my cornea. If I continued to exclusively using glasses instead it might have not gone that much worse. I haven't worn contacts since 2008.
@DoctorEyeHealth

That is an interesting idea. Although I have not seen any published evidence of soft contact lens wear leading to worse astigmatism. I could imagine RGP lenses maybe having an influence in the cornea.

One question: Can someone with astigmatism get a perfect prescription? Prescription that fully corrects astigmatism and removes the starburst effect on light sources at night? I have the oblique astigmatism around 1 diopter if that changes anything.

I also have astigmatism (-2.75) and my glasses are not able to correct it to 6/6 , they are 6/9 . Is it a problem?

Do you know of any new surgery for people who have had surgery and have a scaleral buckle which can see but vision is distorted.

HAH! you just explained why i didn't have an astigmatism until i was 48. I had 20:15 vision most of my life. Started using reading glasses around age 42. At 56 i am noticing increasing blurriness. I assume it's more astigmatism development. 😊

Yes I have the curse of keratokonus. Four years ago most of my issues were cleared up by switching to scleral contact lenses. However I just found out I have pretty bad cataracts in both eyes. Funny enough my right cornea is so messed up we can't even get a basic reading of the cornea curvature but thinking is we can calculate based on the curvature of my contact lenses. The Doctor is thinking I shoukd go with a new IOL lense to counteract the astigmatism that employs a dark ring around the IOL similar to a "pin hole" effect (seeing better thru small holes). Wish me luck because I'm on the edge of loosing my legal drivers license status.

I heard that if I’m squinting my eyes all the time it will cause my eyes to have astigmatism. Is this true from your findings? If so if I really try hard to not squint will that improve my vision in the future?

Are you more likely to develop strabismus with astigmatism? I feel like one of my eyes wanders outwards but I can’t tell if it’s visible or if it just feels that way since that’s the eye with more astigmatism? I only feel it without my contacts in and when looking far away.

I never developed binocular vision, immature left eye. Astigmatism and myopathy at 30 occured. Glasses from then to my dying day, I suppose, and hopefully no cataracts!!! They refuse to operate!

Hi, does astigmatism varies during the course of the day and from day to day?

Astigmatism is more noticeable during the night or in low light conditions due to the pupil dilating and letting in more light. More unfocussed light rays enter the eye and the blur caused by astigmatism increases. I hope my comment make sense.

I had an infection of the retina where my vision has been impaired and what I see is like looking through a glass with light tea or coffee. Things are darker and oftentimes straight edges look crooked.

These examples of how someone sees, when they have astigmatism are exactly what i have described to eye doctors for years, but they still say i have 20/20 vision and could only use a slight prescription, not even worth much consideration. I cant drive at night since the glare is crazy, especially with rain or sleet.

I have had astigmatism for most of my 73 years. I can no longer wear contacts because of dry eye & plaque formation, but my glasses fix it. Without my glasses, I see 3 moons, 2 side-by-side and one below the middle of the two top ones.

I was told that I had astigmatism a year ago when I went to the eye doctor and said it's really hard to drive at night and couldn't see what was written on the blackboard at school and turns out I had "pretty severe" astigmatism so I got prescribed glasses with astigmatism correction and + and - prescription. I see so much better now😂
