On Xiidra, mild stinging upon application but, keeping in fridge helps with that. Also, blocking tear ducts and applying right before brushing teeth helps with metallic taste. My eyes are definitely brighter and my lids no longer "cling" to my eyes.

I have been on Restasis for years and this works well for me. However, I want to warn patients to have your eye doctor only prescribe the vials; I was prescribed the bottle with the green cap once. The bottle is very hard to open and squeezing drops out is very difficult., thus you waste half of it! After picking up from the pharmacy, you cannot return a prescription . This was about a $200 mistake!

I have learned so much about dry eyes from this channel. It’s simply the best eye doctor channel out there. Thank you for your dedication for bringing us these in depth videos. I currently have been a contact wearer for the past 15 years and due to over wearing a monthly pair, experienced one of the WORST dry eye flares. My vision has been blurry and I work from home so the screens definitely do not help. After some talk with my insurance, I was able to get my Xiidra covered. I’ve been on it for about 6 weeks and it’s the only thing that’s helping me get through this flare. I started to be able to actually see clearly after about 2 weeks on it. I couldn’t imagine dealing with symptoms for 3-6 months before things got better. Thanks again for the informative vid!

@@Churrow hi!! I would say try Xiidra first as the medication seems to start helping in 2 weeks versus months with Restasis. I was on Xiidra for a few months and then finally got in with a dry eye specialist. She recommended Lipiflow because after getting my eyes examined, I have MGD. I did the treatment and now I’m still currently on the Xiidra, and Pataday (allergy drop). My symptoms are almost fully gone and I’m able to wear my contacts again. However, I don’t wear them as much and they are daily disposable versus monthly. The best advice I can give you is find a good dry eye specialist, as my regular eye doctor really did not know how to treat it. Dry eye is usually caused by more than one thing and a typical eye doctors office does not have the needed tests and equipment to fully diagnose. Hope this helps

My Dr prescribed Cequa 2 years ago. Cured my dry eye in about 3 months and continually worked well. 2 months ago my insurance "removed it from the formulary" and would only cover xiidra which has been awful. My eyes are drier, red and irritated all the time. The drops painfully sting for several minutes, and my vision is blurry for several minutes. Trying to hang in there but after 2 months I am considering discontinuing them. (Side note: my dr appealed to my insurance to get me back on Cequa but was refused.

Thank you for this educational video. I’m going to change my eye drop regime based on it. I was motivated to research Xiidra benefits versus ill effects because I can’t take the extreme BURNING Xiidra causes anymore. Based on the information you provided I will stop cyclosporine (Restasis), throw my Xiidra away, and go back to Cequa. I’ve been using both Xiidra and Restasis twice a day for years. I also used to use Cequa (yes, I used to use all three every day). Interesting that you say that Restasis burns for some people but make no mention of Xiidra burning. My experience is the opposite. Restasis never burns. I HATE Xiidra for that reason-I dread the burning so much that lately I’ve been foregoing it. And it’s not just burning on contact-the burning then persists. No other side effects. I wonder why no one else has mentioned how severely Xiidra BURNS. For a while I also used Cequa. Nothing stops my symptoms completely. I’ve been using both Xiidra and Restasis for years (I stopped the Cequa years ago just because I was sick of juggling so many medications every day). I have no issues with Restasis at all but can’t tell if it actually helps or not because my eyes still bother me incessantly even though I also use Serum tears frequently plus eye gel at night and sometimes use both heat and cold applications. For years I’ve been doing eyelid scrubs with baby shampoo. Dry eyes can have such a negative impact on quality of life it can be bad enough to want to poke your eyes out-since I don’t want to do that, it seems that checking out might be the best alternative.

I have been on Restates for about 6 months and my results are inconsistent. I use warm compresses at least twice daily and Systane (over the counter) drops 3-4 times a day, along with Restates twice a day. My eyes will be pretty much normal for about 3-4 days and then suddenly become red and irritated for a couple of days in a row, interfering greatly with my daily life. I use eye wipes, stay well hydrated, limit eye makeup (or don't use any for days in a row), and do all I can to help. I just called to ask my eye doctor to prescribe Xiidra in the hope that it will produce a more consistent result. I will revisit this video in the future and give an update. I was diagnosed with Bells Palsy in 2015. That has resulted in severe dry syndrome. I was on Xiidra for a couple years and I absolutely hated it. First off it is expensive, burned my eyes like a Branding iron, left the nasty taste in your mouth and the little vial is not resealable. I could not read my cell phone or emails for about an hour after I put drops in my eye. Big negative in my case. Plus it did not help or relieve my eye pain. I do not recommend Xiidra, but you do you. I asked my ophthalmologist about any other meds. He put me on Restasis which is only slightly higher than Xiidra. Restasis has a cooling effect immediately when placed in my eyes. It is resealable which is big plus for me, no nasty taste in my mouth, plus I can read immediately after putting drops in my eyes. My eye have improved in making my own tears with Restasis. I have not tried the Cequa drops. I recommend Restasis to everyone.

I love Restasis! Unfortunately, my eye doctors kept putting me on Xidra, which I hate! It burns like fire. I just couldn't do it. I was finally able to get the generic and am thrilled with it. I think it may be better than Restasis.

I had VERY severe dry eye with inflamation and swelling of my eyes to where they were half closed and extremely light sensitive. Couldn't go out in sunlight or look at a computer screen. Kelowna BC. Allergies, drought with extremely dry air, heat wave where one day temps got to 50C. (122 Fahrenheit). And if that wasn't enough, smoke from forest fires thick in the air. Six different prescriptions later, including allergy eye drops and steroids my eyes were much better, and finally I went on Xiidra. Well the smoke, dry air and heat were gone by that time and one month on Xiidra I was to the point where I went off all medication except omega 3 oral capsules and Systane eye drops very occasionally.

@@DoctorEyeHealth Thanks. Honestly was probably the smoke put me over the edge. Like sitting at a campfire and smoke constantly blowing into your eyes. Well and the heat... OK like trying to cook a marshmellow in a fork with the wind blowing the smoke in your face.

Do these pharmaceutical treatments permanently cure dry eyes (for some people, I'm guessing) after a few years of taking them? (Because that's what it sounds like.) Or, do patients need to take it fo a long time, maybe even to the point of depending on these drugs for dry eyes and can't go without.
@DoctorEyeHealth2 жыл бұрын
The pharma companies probably want people to stay on them forever. I like to think of them similar to "anti-depressants", You can use them indefinitely, but they are best when used in conjunction with other therapy to solve the root issue. Once the root issue is addressed, then maybe you can let off the medication. Does that make sense?

I could not get pass the taste of xiidra it would upset my stomach so bad tried all the tricks and some times would taste it for 2-6 hours later!! The taste would go away then all of a sudden would get a new rush of it. my doc just switched me to Restasis and I didn't think it was working as well but with you saying can take 3 months to see significant improvement that has me more confident to keep trying and hope it helps (just switched last week)

I have been on xxidra for three weeks now…I am finding relief from very severe dry eye for years now…I can actually read an entire article and my light sensitivity seems better. I just feel brighter in the eye area after years of squinting at the slightest glare or light. I am not positive but something is happening. The slight taste in the back of the throat is not a big deal at all and only lasts a few moments…not bad at all nor the stinging compared to the severity of my condition. It also only lasts moments and I actually feel better relief wise within 5 minutes after applying. Maybe that is just the liquid soothing the eye once burn is gone. Again. It’s not bad at all. So…we will see. I am hopeful for the first time in a decade now.

Well I personally liked Xidra unfortunately my ins would not pay for it, but my Ins did pay for Restasis. I have bad gritnes that looks like glitter, floaters, dry eye syndrome, some light Caterax in right eye, photophobia all bright lights give me migraines especially all LED lights & those florescent lights. Tinted windows do help & tinted windows are a pain in the butt, they have to be kept clean, dust free, RainX 12 coats per window, as having an exemption It has reduced migraines for night time driving & to prevent further damage in the future. Thanks you , for going over both medications. Xidra seemed to work immediately for me when my eye DR gave me some samples, no dry eyes after about the fourth day in a weeks packet, so I picked up the Restasis 15-4-23 , so I will not know the full benefits of Restasis tell a few months from now, as I got a a full year supply. Hopefully I can come back to this video, and let you know how the Restasis works 3-4 months from now. :) Most importantly keeping our bodies hydrated with lots of filtered clean water, great non GMO Vitamins & Minerals.

A somewhat tangential question, what are your opinions on the various ant-cataract eye drops? Are they completely bogus, or is there some actual positive data?
@DoctorEyeHealth2 жыл бұрын
You know, I had a lot of people ask about those a few years back. I dug into the research then, maybe 2019. The little data out there was based on animal studies that some eye drops could prevent or maybe eliminate some clouding of the crystalline lens. However, the research I had read did not show too much promise, and I did not see anything specific for humans. I will look into it again though, maybe some new research has come out. But be sure, if it ever becomes a real thing, a pharma company will buy it for billions of dollars and charge thousands of dollars for it. It will not be a 15 dollar drop sold on amazon. (sad truth)

I have MGD and some Blepharitis. I'm 58 yo female and active in the outdoors on a daily basis. If there is any wind at all, even wind that I create when I bike ride, my eyes are red and sore the rest of the day. I have tried many natural interventions now for two weeks in addition to heat packs at the end of each day (for several months now) and have not seen a change so am thinking that I'll end up on medication. I live in Alaska and winter bike and/or xc ski nearly every day. Do you have a medication recommendation? I'm looking for wind goggles but I am very small and have a small face. Many of these are quite large.
@DoctorEyeHealth2 жыл бұрын
I have tried Eye Eco moisture chambers that had a small option (although it was probably medium), but they did bend around the nose making them smaller. Perhaps those could help while biking ? As far as medication recommendations, the videos on the channel here can hopefully provide you with education about what is available and what the medications do, but ultimately, your local doctor is going to have to help you with that. This video is pretty comprehensive if you have not seen it : kzbin.info/www/bejne/jqKtf4aifN6grqc
