I actually think the person who posted that did not understand some advice from their OB/GYN office. When I had my children, I was told that a cold cabbage leaf could help with discomfort of a breast that's swollen due to my milk coming in, because it has a nicely cupped shape that fits more easily inside a bra then most cold packs, but they never said anything about treating an infection.

As someone with scoliosis, I'm really glad you made the point of not wearing one strap on one shoulder. If you have scoliosis and you wear a backpack by only one strap, that can cause uneven weight, worsen your curve, and even give you back and shoulder pain. One piece of advice I have (if you go to school) is to wear a backpack to school and not have a tote bag. If the school doesn't allow backpacks, ask the principal or an administrator for permission, and maybe get a note from your doctor, just in case.
@angellittle1571
@angellittle1571 Жыл бұрын
YES. I had a doctor's note for a rolling backpack I could take to class, and always had a key to use the elevators. Not scoliosis, but other chronic bs that started nasty with puberty. My back and knees in particular were the worst. Plus a backpack is only supposed to be 1/10th your body weight, at most 2/10ths (10-20%). I was light enough that just a couple of textbooks passed that, so between not being able to take the stairs and needing to be easy on my body, rolling backpack was the best. Plus it's hard to accidentally leave stuff in your locker when you can essentially bring it with you.

Note: Mastitis is NOT an infection of the nipple. It can *involve* the nipple, but Mastitis is an infection of the milk ducts in the breast, and is most common when baby has a poor latch and thus does not fully empty the ducts, or the duct gets blocked and clogged some other way. It is a bacterial infection common during the first 3 months of breast feeding, but most common when mom's milk comes in and the breasts become engorged. Having experienced mastitis multiple times in both breasts with both of my kids, I will swear by the cabbage leaf. I tried warm and cool compresses, lying stomach down in a hot bath and massaging the duct in order to hand express the infected milk in the blocked duct, as well as OTC NSAIDS, there is something about the cabbage leaf (someone really needs to do a research study into this) that goes beyond "it's cold, it helps", as the cabbage leaf would continue to promote pain relief even after it becomes warm. Bonus, the cabbage leaf is the same design as a breast, and fits around it perfectly without getting clothes all wet with condensation, and is surreptitious enough to wear in your bra even if you have to leave the house. Was the cabbage leaves individually and well, and you've got no worries about infection transferring in.

Nursing student here! Actually the cabbage one is partly true. No, if there is an infection quite severe treatment is required. But, cabbage is a great cold compress, has the form of the breast and is available to everyone. We tell women in postpartum to apply a leaf of cold cabbage that was in the fridge on the breast to help with soreness and inflammation after the first few weeks of breastfeeding. Works super well, mom's always think its pretty absurd but they love it! Love your videos Dr.Mike

My former stepmother actually used the baking soda hack on my hair when it got unbelievably greasy, and it did wonders, though baking soda is quite harsh on your hair, so if it's only slightly greasy, follow Dr. Mike's advice on this one.

@lorettajackson8759 9 ай бұрын
Hello. I started doing "no poo" (short for no shampoo) on my hair several years ago, and wish I had started sooner. Baking soda is the "shampoo ", and vinegar is the "conditioner". It works through chemistry and water temp (hot to wash, cold to finish). The Baking soda can be harsh if used dry, so now I only use it after it has been activated in hot water. It will fizz and turn clear, when done properly. It creates a somewhat slippery liquid that washes my hair pretty well.

I call BS on his scoliosis claim. I have scoliosis and have done a lot of reading and have always heard that posture and backpacks don’t cause scoliosis. (More often bad posture is caused by scoliosis and the person trying to stay comfortable.) Backpacks can exacerbate it, but does not cause it. I realize I’m not a doctor but either those studies are hidden in a secret vault for doctors only, or it’s not true.

suitcases can only cause postural scoliosis that is completely treatable with physical therapy and stretches. Most scoliosis are structural and the cause of its appearance cannot be known but it is a malformation that is not caused by backpacks. I have scoliosis and I had to have scoliosis surgery. @@annemargaretbridges792 Washing your hair everyday is pretty bad for your hair, so using dry shampoo is really helpful for a lot of people. I know some people use baby powder, I personally hate the smell, and I've heard of people using corn starch to absorb some of the excess oils so their hair seems fresher and less greasy. Its less chemicals and cheaper than using a dry shampoo, and definitely more convenient than washing your hair everyday.

@RoyalReyna
@RoyalReyna 3 жыл бұрын
@@tatewakinew No, washing your hair strips it of the natural oils, which makes your scalp compensate by producing more oils. So you create a never ending cycle of wanting to wash your hair every day because it's oily, and it's oily because you wash it every day. Most people don't need to wash their hair everyday. Using a dry shampoo can help you start washing it less without it feeling gross.

I will say that the eczema hack does work. At least for me. It doesn’t make it go away but it eases irritation, dryness, and redness. Oatmeal as a whole is recommended by doctors. I’m not really sure why but every doctor I’ve been to has mentioned it. Not as a cure but as something that helps sooth it. Obviously it doesn’t work for everyone. I’m allergic to a lot of stuff so it’s hard to find medications that I can use and if I do find one they work for about 2 months before they stop working for me. Again it by no means cures it but when I have flare ups it helps.

So, I had to pause. Firstly, why do they put such old (3yrs ago?) vids on my thread? Secondly, I paused at cabbage leaves. I DEFINITELY did this for my VERY TENDER AND SORE BREASTS, after giving birth and it worked amazingly! This is so old, I've actually heard you admit you were wrong, (I love that you do that btw-you are one to be very smart but still right your wrongs on camera ❤), and clear up in a newer video that you were wrong about it! It took a lot of swelling down and eased the pain and I'm little, so having those were new and.... yeah different, but I couldn't take that pain and my mother in law told me to come over, and had that remedy ready, it was relieving! So, YEESS IT'S TRUE FOR THE AFTER PREGNANCY, THAT'S ALL I'VE USED IT FOR! 👍💯 If anyone sees this in 2024😂 Also, we had a very thick book called, " HOME REMEDIES", and got a lot from there and our very smart elders!

During my maternity rotation in nursing school, my professors taught us that cold cabbage leaves are used to help stop milk from coming in for moms who aren't breastfeeding. Never figured out why cabbage leaves specifically were recommended and not just cold compresses - maybe because they contour to the shape of the breast? The cabbage leaf thingy is pretty systematically recommended in Finland (and I think also in the UK) for helping with swelling of breasts when there is a big supply of milk, especially during the first few days after the baby is born. This is the "official" recommendation for minor swelling, and they even have cabbage available in some hospitals on the neo-natal wards, but it's obviously not recommended for more severe cases, and absolutely not for infections, for which the recommendation is to go see a doctor and get antibiotics or whatever medication is needed. Unfortunately none of the websites of these hospitals or any of the instructions I've seen state what is so amazing about cabbage. I've seen a general mention of "an enzyme that reduces inflammation", but I haven't seen that many proper medical studies about it.

Same with my nursing rotation. There was at least one study done that supported it (but it’s been a while since I’ve reviewed any of that). I agree that likely any cold compress would work too.

Yes they do when I had my girl my mother in law told me to use them I could not feed cause nipple rings messed it up so to dry up the milk cabbage leave in the bra worked like a charm just because some scientists have not found the reason for it being able to work or how it works does not mean it don't work I thing most of them are silly and out there but this cabbage to dry up milk has worked for so many lady's for decades and that can't be a coincidence there's a reason for it they just haven't looked for it yet so they call it quackery because they don't know why it works but there's some kind of compound in cabbage that dries up our milk and the proof is in the pudding as they say I wish they would look in to findind out how it works cause it does

The cabbage thing really does work. It also dries up your milk, though. A lot of women use it when they’re ready to stop lactating and it works oddly fast. It just isn’t a great idea if you just have mastitis and want to keep nursing because then you have to fight to get your milk supply back.

@@axewalkwanna know something crazy. The L&D nurse on my discharge day told me about that. While I was in the hospital I was bottle/formula feeding my baby and decided I was going to nurse once we got home. So when I was being discharged I think the nurse automatically thought I was gonna continue formula feeding so she suggested all the methods to decrease my milk supply quick. Double up sports bras and/or cabbage leaves in my bra is what she told me. 🫣

They put onions in my socks and laid me in bed..I remember being so hot the onions were starting to cook on my feet. My mother finally took me to the hospital the next day, thankfully!

Worked for me. It’s not some weird magical thinking thing, it just logical. The leaves are thick and full of water, so they stay cold for a nice long time. The leaves are perfectly boob shaped, I can’t think of another vegetable that produces quite as perfectly bra cup shaped leaves. The texture of them doesn’t stick to any raw skin. Obviously, they are nontoxic, so you don’t have to worry if the baby gets a little cabbage juice left behind on your boob. You can use room temperature ones to help with clogged ducts by keeping in the warm moisture after a shower.

@Niklas 98 could not work if you just put the leaf on. My midwife says you should beat up the leaf first so it releases the juices and then put it on. The leaf is supposed to be dry after some time and the inflammation should disappear or at least be more bearable

I thought the same thing. The only thing I can put it down to is it isn’t about the leaves themselves but cabbage leaves are bigger and probably more pliable then a regular compress. Maybe that’s why they recommend them?

@Niklas 98 you're right, the juice part wasn't specified. To be honest I was pretty weirded out by hearing this for the first time but the more people I talked about this the more stories I heard about how well this works. So recently when I had a baby I told my husband to buy a white cabbage just in case 😂 and it sits in the fridge but happily I didn't have a chance to use it yet 😅
