It’s no joke; I don’t think it’s just doctors though, but anyone with a decent level of medical training. I had a few healthcare workers as patients when I was in EMS and they were often annoying beyond belief…to sum up the issue, they seemed to have an extraordinarily hard time accepting that in that moment, they were the patient and NOT the provider. I remember one MD basically demanding I explain and justify every decision I was making and you just want to tell them to shut up and relax, but…professional ethics 😁

Because we as medical stuff in general don't take care of us for several reason. Either we think we know that we are healthy even though we are not, times don't fit as many work in the time periods other doctor are open so they can't go to doctors in their free time as they are closed, they only care for the health part they work and don't see other areas not doing well and many more reasons. It's actually funny that we as a medical field are there to tell and help others restore their health yet we don't make it a big deal if it comes to ours

Doc, you haven't even touched about the link between high cholesterol and stress. My dad is an anesthesiologist, my uncle a cardiologist, my cousin a family physician. All have high LDL's not just due to diet but due to stress. Yes, doctors do make bad patients. I've lived with them and worked for them in their offices and clinics. The primary problem I see among all of them is stress first and next comes bad eating habits. There are countless research papers and textbook chapters that describe this link. Please make a note about this if you ever decided to read my comment and make a video about reducing stress and cholesterol.

I'm so grateful to you for sharing this, Dr. Mike. My dad, who was very active and had a very physical job, passed away at 63 last July from a heart attack (completely unexpected, no symptoms beforehand), and I've been struggling with full-on health anxiety since then, worrying that I might have an undiagnosed heart problem or something. I went to a cardiologist, and they did an echo and didn't find anything "of concern", but I've still been really anxious, because I turned 30 in November, and I know I haven't been taking the best care of myself for the past couple of years. After watching your video, I realized I didn't recall ever having bloodwork done, so I recently had a full lipid profile, and I found out that my total cholesterol is elevated and my LDL is 130. I'm not sure it would have occurred to me (and apparently it didn't occur to any of my doctors) to think about my cholesterol levels yet if you hadn't posted this video...but now I can move forward with a specific plan to eat healthier and take better care of myself. Also, I just want to say thank you for all that you do in general. You've played a big part in inspiring me to go back to school for another degree--this time in Nursing. I'm almost done with my prerequisities, and I hope to start clinical courses in the fall. I want to be the kind of nurse that you are a doctor--approachable, knowledgable, holistic, and most of all deeply caring about patients. Thank you again, and God bless!

High levels of stress and incorrect handling of heavy emotions also play a role in it, so please take care of your mental health! I'm telling you this bc "High cholesterol genes" run in my family so I know firsthand how much they can impact someone's life, but, at the same time, how simple it is to keep your levels under control once you get used to it. To give you an example, grandad always had high LDL levels, however, he was an active person who ate lots of fiber and tiny amounts of fats, he had an excellent quality of life and passed away at 80 yo due to unrelated issues (lung cancer since he smoked for several years), his son (my uncle), on the other hand, is an extremely sedentary person who lives in constant stress. He's currently 55 yo and has already had 3 heart attacks.

That would be really fascinating! I've never consulted one, but have recently begun wondering whether it might be helpful...? Diet planning gets difficult when you have lots of food sensitivities! @yhch73383 жыл бұрын
@@anna_in_aotearoa3166 Where I work dieticians are generally best for disease-specific diets, rather than for general nutrition advice. Not to say they can't, cause defo they'd know loads about a normal healthy diet. However nutritionists should be able to help you with that and potentially may be cheaper to consult too :P In general any greens and fruits are great regardless of price. Often expensive stuff like berries, almonds, avocados etc. are touted as superfoods but they're really not necessary for a good, balanced, varied diet. Edit- tbh if you have a ton of food sensitivities a dietician might be better!

@@anna_in_aotearoa3166 In all fairness, it might be used interchangeably in different places, I'm not from NZ so I wouldn't know! Here dieticians are medically trained for "prescribing" a diet, while nutritionists aren't medically recognised being able to "prescribe" diets for specific diseases. However good nutritionists can defo point people in the right direction for a good diet! You're completely right in that dieticians might have key roles in diabetes, morbid obesity etc., cause eating healthy (+/- losing weight) is generally good, potentially curative, for many many conditions.
@bosre56263 жыл бұрын
@@anna_in_aotearoa3166 Kia ora, fellow Kiwi here! I guess the main difference between a dietitan and nutritionist is that a dietitian is also trained to work in a medical setting unlike a nutritionist. The thing to be mindful of is that technically anyone can call themselves a nutritionist (e.g. you could do a 3 week online course and say you're a nutritionist), whereas 'dietitian' is a protected term that requires a master's degree. In saying that, a 'registered nutritionist' here in NZ must have a bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in nutrition. So if you are seeking dietary advice, look for either a dietitian or registered nutritionist 😊

I know a lot of doctors (from my family, my med school teachers, my own doctors, etc) and most of them eat terribly, and take poor care of their health in general. Knowing how you are supposed to eat doesn't mean you follow those recommendations. And doctors routines tend to be super crazy, so it isn't easy to keep healthy habits

Most doctors probably have pretty bad diets. They have to deal with a lot of stress and responsibility and most work long hours and often they just eat whatever is around whenever they find the time to eat. Knowing what food is healthy or not really isn't that complicated. The hard part is putting in the time and effort to stick to a healthy diet.

This is such a good message with such comprehensive points. When I was in high school I got really into clinical and applied nutrition because I was ripped as hell but found out through some bloodwork that I was severely nutrient deficient in a lot of micronutrients. The idea that weight and physique really do not indicate heath (and sometimes can in fact indicate the opposite) is such an important point that a lot of people are not taught. This is no fault of anyone's own, it's honestly played up by industries like fitness, film, tv, and especially supplements - that losing weight and/or body fat is the only way to become healthy

I buy my own food, keep it in it's own place, find time to cook it, and generally don't share it. It takes more will power when those you live with don't eat the same way, but it can be done and it is worth it. I also hate exercising for the sake of exercising so I have an active job instead and I love it!
@taisiyanasretdinova34133 жыл бұрын
I don’t know if that’s something realistic for you, but maybe you could offer to make a few meals a week for those who live with you and make it a bit healthier? Another idea is to try to meal prep some food that is better for you (or even just elements of meals, to go with whatever is normally prepared. For example: a chunk of meat was prepared for everyone and served with potatoes at a meal. You prep some vegetables and when it’s time to eat build your plate with more of the veg.). As far as movement goes - working out is not the only way to stay active. Try to think of an activity that requires movement, be it cycling in your neighborhood to see a friend or foraging if there is a forest nearby or building a compost pile and maintaining it or hiking and taking pictures or gardening. The point is just to move, pretty simple. Best of luck to you!

This was great. I never really understood the reason why my doctor wanted me to eat food with fibre in them, but this was a great example of why I should and completely understand the benefits of it now!
@phox15153 жыл бұрын
fibre helps you poop regularly too... if you don't get enough you'll either being redecorating the toilet bowl or you'll feel like you are passing shards of glass. neither good experiences (especially the latter because if your bowel movements are too dry you can actually cause tears in the rectum, then you got bloody stools and it hurts even more until they heal.). Sadly most people don't consume the recommended amount of fibre (about 30g a day). I was reading on avg most adults consume around 14g.
@sarahb76263 жыл бұрын
Eating red meat and processed meats (such as bacon, sausages, etc) on a consistent basis increases someone's risk for developing colon cancer, and increasing more plants into one's diet decreases the risk for colon cancer. Of course, family history and genetics also play an important role, but diet can also have a significant positive or negative impact.
@midnight83413 жыл бұрын
@@phox1515 it's even worse when you're looking at other values... We should be eating about 3-4 times more fibre than we actually do, but have you ever seen the recommended intake of sugar and what the normal adult actually consumes? Recommended is about 24g of sugar (glucose or saccharose) per day. In Germany, the standard adult eats about 70-85g of sugar per day. Even worse in the US. And we're all wondering why we're getting more and more obese... That's the reason I cut out almost all sugar from my diet. I bake with only half the sugar content as indicated in the recipe (works perfectly fine) and I mostly substitute even that with Xylitol or Steviol, which is just as sweet, but not glycemic. Why? Because I love cake, but I don't need it survive, so why pack it full of unnecessary calories I don't need? And I simply can't avoid the sugar in a lot of processed stuff or food that I eat out, so I'm gonna minimize it at home. Now I think it would be a fairly good solution to not sell flour as we do now, but substitute a part of it with cellulose (like 60% flour, 40% cellulose or something). Because cellulose is basically the epitome of fibre, can't be digested by humans and tastes like nothing. And we produce more than enough of it. I always wanted to try this out, but the only cellulose powder you can buy is either laboratory grade (not intended for consumption) or pet food supplement grade (not exactly intended for human consumption). But just think about not only cutting out 80-95% of calories in baked goods from sugar, but also 40% of calories from the flour. That should mean cutting out almost 50% of the calories you're consuming via bread, etc while substantially increasing fibre content.

Do you have a lot of animal products? I find that I always have too many saturated fat when I try to have more protein. 5-6% of your total calories at most should be from saturated fats. For someone who needs around at least 2500kcal a day, I will then find it difficult to have any sweets or treat (which I often have), because that puts me over the daily limit. Keep in mind, there is also saturated fat in plants so for me about 30% comes from that. What I mean to say is that I think people overestimate how much saturated fat they have on a daily basis.

I got flagged for slightly elevated LDL cholesterol at my last primary appointment. I’m only 25 and never thought this is something I need to be wary of until I was older. This is so helpful! Thanks Dr. Mike!

As someone who has a genetic relationship with high cholesterol thx for saying weight has nothing to do with it! Although I wasn’t overweight I was continually being told to watch my diet. I don’t eat red meat, hate fast food, don’t fry anything, avoid dairy, love fruits, veggies and could live on black beans. My cholesterol was often in excess of 500. I do take medication now and having recently sorted out a chronic low sodium issue am almost at normal. My ldl is still on the high side but not scary high anymore. If you do have a good clean diet be sure to mention that to your doctor if your cholesterol comes back high, and make sure they listen!

Weight stigma in healthcare causes SO much damage - and this goes both ways, as you clearly showed here in the assumption that because you 'looked' fine, you must be fine. Kudos for being open and honest about it.
@midnight83413 жыл бұрын
To be perfectly honest, it's all about the diet. If you burn enough calories you can eat pretty unhealthy and still look stunning (Dr Mike is the prime example here), while secretly amassing a lot of health problems you don't see at first. But no way in hell is a 300+lbs/150kg person with high body fat index eating a healthy diet (in size and composition). And even there, if their blood work looks fine, there is still a lot of physical damage they're doing to their body, for example their joints or arteries. So yeah, not every fit looking person is living a healthy life style, but I'm pretty sure that almost no overweight person is. And getting thin really isn't the goal here, but you can't stay above 300lbs when eating healthy (again, in size and composition) and getting a bit of excersize in. So, the general recommendation to loose a bit of weight is still perfectly valid in most adults, doesn't mean that they'll be any healthier if they don't change how they eat. But it's almost impossible to eat a better diet and not loose weight. The human body is evolved to exist in a nutrient poor environment (where it makes perfect sense to store everything you don't desperately need as fat for bad times), so if you truly don't over-consume, you will not get fat (supposed no serious disease that disregulates your bodies ability to store or use nutrients). It's just pretty hard to stay inside what would be a good diet your body is evolved for, when all of society bombards you with the stuff your body _wants_ which isn't at all what you _need_ on a regular basis. Quite the opposite, actually.

The fact that he was told to get his blood work checked speaks against your point though - his doctors knew that just because he looked fine, he mightve had some issues.

I would have never guessed he would have that issue when he is fit and is around 30. Good to know, and something to possibly talk with my doctor about. I had already scheduled a physical before this, but keep having to postpone due to getting a cold and then covid. The nurse checking me in at my last doc apptmt even told me I didn't need a physical since I am only 30, but I feel like that's between myself and my doctor. I'm the one who has to live with my health, so I want to improve it as much as I can and prevent as many big issues as possible.

I applaud anyone who has to change their diet. Just the mental mindset to stick with it and tell yourself that you can’t have these certain items anymore it’s just crazy. I don’t think people understand how hard it is to not want to eat things you used to love but can’t. And it’s even harder to understand as a child, because you just want to eat whatever you want. So it has lot of mental fortitude and will power to change ones diet. So I applaud you. It’s not easy not even for just health alone. So I wish you good luck and hope you’re doing okay.

"Weight is not the single determinant of your health status." Yes! My eating disorder therapist and nutritionist would agree, and say that balance is important when eating... They would say that there is no such thing as 'junk' food, as all food is nutritious--a person just needs a lot of variety of food.
@Kay-cp8tg3 жыл бұрын
Hard disagree. A bag of chips is not nutritious. Chocolate cake is not nutritious. Balance is important but call the food what it is, junk.

@Kay as someone who has also struggled with disordered eating, eating unhealthy is better than not eating at all. Is it the best? No. But something is better than nothing when you have disordered eating. My body would much prefer a slice of cake than playing “how many days can I go without eating.”
@thomaswhite30593 жыл бұрын
@@Kay-cp8tg I mean there is no food that has no value at all. There are foods that are *better* for you, but even cake or chips have calories, which your body needs. Now they might not have much else, which is less good.

Great foods that lower cholesterol are also: • Beans (black, kidney, lentil, etc) • Oats (make sure there is no refined sugar) • Avocado (love me some guacamole) • Green tea (could be breakfast or before you go to bed) • Almonds, hazelnuts, and other nuts (great snack) • Olive Oil (pair it with hummus & a whole wheat wrap)

I love hummus with veggies like carrots, cucumbers, broccoli, and celery. I get in more veggies and fiber & good fats. Steel cut oats are great with some frozen fruit and a splash of milk. Beans are a great way to add fiber and protein to everything from tacos, salads, burritos, chili, soups, etc. Avocados are also easy to add to tacos, salads, burritos, sandwiches, wraps, and as a veggie dip or just whole.

There is a lot of discussion in binge eating recovery circles about pairing high fat/high cholesterol inducing foods with high fibre foods. It's great to talk about eating ideally all the time but it can be extremely difficult for folks that use food as an emotional support to just suddenly only eat veggies and beans. Being more realistic about the fact that high fact foods will be consumed and then talking about amounts and pairings can be so much more beneficial. In addition to making sure you eat enough throughout the day to avoid that late night binge on easy access foods because you're suddenly starving.
@Wwetitanfan273 жыл бұрын
buying and having healthier foods around is very helpful. so either not buying the stuff that you'll later regret having, or having healthier stuff more accessible to you. Like keeping healthy stuff on your endtable or counter or whatever, or even just in front of the pantry, and the less beneficial stuff harder to get. Or don't buy it from the store and so if you want the junk late at night, you'll have to go out to buy it rather than having it right next to you. Makes it a lot easier to make the healthier choice. also maybe write a note to yourself on the pantry with whatever you think would be beneficial, to make yourself pause, take a breath, and encourage yourself to make a healthier choice. Mindfulness is huge. but all of these make it easier to make a healthier choice without "depriving" or forbidding yourself of having your favorite things.

I intuitively did this when I started to develop a binge eating disorder and I really that it’s what saved me from having life long weight/health issues. In fact, it was when I realized I had an ED and tried to fix it in stupid ways (cutting out carbs, skipping healthy meals and just eating dessert, trying to under eat to correct for a binge) that things started to get bad

One thing I'm really thankful you mentioned is the concept that "looking skinny/fit does not equal being healthy." Its something I used to get a lot from many of my heavier friends and would have to sort of defend by pointing out visually where they were not correct about it. "Oh but you're skinny so you have to be healthier than me." Except I wasn't and never have been. (When we all walk up Seattle hills and they can make it to the top without being winded or having to stop and rest, before I can even get halfway up, that tells you something right there.) Then I moved. My diet and lifestyle changed drastically. And I gained a ton of weight. Went from 104 lbs to 252.2 lbs at my peak (I have since lost the weight and am back to what my typical used to be.) My doctor here kept relaying every one of my pre-existing health issues to that higher weight. Um. Ma'am? Did you not see where these issues were pre-existing? How they were already an issue back when I was regularly between 103 and 125 lbs? How I've had all of these issues since i was about 11 years old and Im well into my 30s at that point? How before I was told "its just all in your head" and now the go to rhetoric is "you're too fat?" How does that coorolate at this point? And then other medical professionals wonder why people lose confidence and faith in their Healthcare systems. This. This is why. When you can physically see the shift from one method of blame to another rather than just being told the honest truth which is "whatever the health issue here is, we can't find the cause and just don't know at this point. Hopefully through future research and understanding and perhaps even through your help with documentations and records we might eventually be able to find an answer."

I’m on the different end. I was the chubbiest in my family, but when I got my blood work done five months ago, I was completely healthy. Low on bad cholesterol, normal on good cholesterol, blood sugar levels good, etc. The one thing we did catch is that I have PCOS, which basically makes losing weight difficult. So there’s that.

Being overweight is not healthy-I have been almost my entire life, and only now am I starting to get a handle on it-but it is NOT the be-all, end-all cause of health problems. It is often a contributing factor, but might not have anything to do with the issue at all! I wish more doctors would understand this.

It's encouraging to see a doctor who is open about his health, the good and bad. It's hard to not feel judged by doctors when they tell you that you need to do something different. My family doctor was totally empathetic but when I found out I had high cholesterol (I was a 23 year old woman, now 26) it was a different doctor and he was trying to put me on a statin and everything. I checked with my family doctor and she didnt want me on a statin and sent me to a nutritionist instead. The nutritionist was also sort of empathetic but a lot more 'let's get this done' which was a little intimidating, I didnt have a lot of confidence in my ability to actually fix it. But over the course of a year or so my bad cholesterol went into ideal levels (HDL needed work still) and I had lost 40ish pounds. I've now lost 50-55 pounds (small fluctuation) and am so much healthier and dont even need the nutritionist anymore. Diet does amazing things!!

I had a similar talk with my doctor not that long ago-I generally look super-healthy and fit for a guy my age (40s), I can do an enviable amount of cardio and weight lifting, apart from some digestive tract issues I really have no health complaints whatsoever... But my LDL cholesterol fluctuates around 160, and total serum cholesterol usually goes above 250 and that is, apparently, a cause of concern in the long term. I went through quite extensive cardiovascular testing and they couldn't find out anything wrong but in the words of my doctor: "You just keep at it and soon enough we will see something, but then it will be too late..." Now, if I could only get myself to change my dietary habits...
