3:30 Something interesting about this is that I have a 7 month old daughter. She’s currently in the process of learning how to sit and crawl and all that. I was just thinking recently about how we always try to protect our falls with our hands and legs. I was thinking about it because she DOESNT do that. She doesn’t have that instinct to protect her falls. She just hits her head. Which is fascinating to me because that has to be a learned response. Like, most people would say it’s instinctual, but we can observe the fact that it’s not because babies don’t have this instinct. It likely becomes a learned behavior by all the times we fall as kids.
@TheDeadPirateBob4 ай бұрын
There is a reflex called the parachute reflex, also called forward parachute reaction (FPR), that children should develop between 5-9 months, where babies will instinctively reach their arms out when they realize they’re falling. There is a study that showed that 21% of infants do not show a complete maturity of the FPR and that this also correlates to how fast they learn to walk. (I’m not saying anything is wrong with your child or anyone’s who doesn’t do this, but you should at least bring it up to your pediatrician if you haven’t already. [Development of the forward parachute reaction and the age of walking in near term infants: a longitudinal observational study Domenico MM Romeo, Matteo Cioni, Mariacristina Scoto, Filippo Palermo, Alessandra Pizzardi, Anna Sorge, and Mario G Romeo]

babies and toddlers don’t have their motor skills tuned yet. so it may not be fair to say they don’t have the instincts- they could have it and just be inaccurate performing it. doctors do test babies for something called the Moro reflex, where they’re checking to see if the baby reacts to the feeling of falling. it’s present in all newborns

4:58 when I was 14 they said my blood pressure was so high they wanted me to cut out all salt and see them a month later. When I came back it was still incredibly high. The doctor seemed confused and asked what I had been eating. I had also slimmed down because sports had started up again so it seemed that it should be fine but was alarmingly high. Then he paused and asked what color was the blood pressure cuff. The nurse had used a pediatric cuff and I had stopped growing at 13 and was an absolutely massive 14 year old who was far too big for a pediatric blood pressure cuff.

I agree with the icing one. I sprained my ankle while living with my auntie and she never iced it once. She wrapped it and deep massaged it like twice a day and would very slowly roll my ankle around. It was sprained for about maybe 2-3 days before I could completely walk on it again. Auntie never iced, just massaged twice a day for about 5-10 minutes. I'm not at all saying that it's a hack but it seems it'll help more than just icing it and laying there waiting to heal. It did hurt, of course, when she was massaging it but with a new day, the pain reduced significantly.

As a Norwegian sports medic, we're taught that ice packs are mostly psychological, and it sure seems that way too. Everyone asks for an ice pack, when we know for a fact that what has the biggest impact is protection, rest and compression.
@ToxinBrewer10 ай бұрын
I thought it was also to reduce swelling, is that a myth?
@Henoik10 ай бұрын
@@ToxinBrewer Yes, that's a myth. Ice packs might, however, help with numbing the area for the time you have the ice pack on. But mostly it's still psychological really. The best thing you can do for the swelling is early application of compression (within the first 2-3 minutes of the injury). The first application of compression should be quite tight (remember, we're trying to restrict blood flow to the area) for about 15 minutes. Then, after 15 minutes, a looser compression can be put on, for the next 48 hours (but taken off when you are sleeping and showering). But under no circumstance do we want the compression itself to hurt or to cause numbing.

I tripped while running a few months ago. I was not able to either tuck and roll or get my hands up. Multiple jaw fractures. Falling when running hurts.
