8:40 I was there, it was INSANE. I have never heard a sound so loud before in my life, everyone was SO happy for her. Sure, the game was far from normal gameplay, but the fact that she was able to make a basket was simply amazing. Everyone in the gymnasium was so respectful; you could hear a pin drop aside from the sound guidance and you could just tell everyone was hoping she would make a basket, then she did, and the room ERUPTED. It was so cool. For context, this basketball game was our annual unified basketball game, which is a cool thing that allows the special needs students a chance to experience sports in a way they probably wouldn't have otherwise. Such a magical moment. I come from a small town so I was shocked to see this on Dr. Mike's yt channel!

Injury story: One night last summer I was doing chest day at the gym. It was like 11pm at night (24 hour gym) and I had the place all to myself. I was doing decline dumbbell presses. I had two sets of weights. One heavy, and one lighter. I was on my 2nd or 3rd set with the lighter weights, but I had set the other weights too close to my drop zone. I was on my last rep before failure, pushing as hard as I can, then I dropped the weights down. I got my right ring finger sandwiched between the weight I was holding and the weight on the ground! Boy that hurt like a SOB! Luckily no one was around to hear the horrible expletives coming out of my mouth. I went to the bathroom to put my finger under cool water to ease with the pain. It bruised and I could barely move it. I assumed if I shook it off for a few minutes it would be fine. But it wasn’t. I cut the workout short and went home to sleep it off. I woke up the next morning and my finger was purple and even stiffer. I went to the urgent care center to have it x-rayed. Before the x-ray, the doctor walked into my exam room and said, “Bro, I don’t even have to x-ray that to tell you that finger’s definitely broken.”

The worst gym injury I've ever seen was a video my FIL sent to my husband. This woman was doing idk, leg presses I think (the one where you're sitting with weights pressing against your feet and extend your legs out). She was obviously pressing too much. And she had a spotter beside her, but someone else distracted him for just a moment, and that was the moment when she extended her legs out fully -- and locked her knees. The weights pressed back and bent her knees backwards, and all she could do was scream in agony. The video didn't continue far enough to see the spotter get her out, we just saw him whip around and reach for the machine before it ended. I can only imagine the damage she sustained from that or the recovery involved.

I had trouble with my shoulders for years until I learnt to lock in properly. Having said that, the butt isn't meant to lift, you're meant to push toward your head, not up.

I remember when I used to go to an athletic training facility, something similar happened to me like what happened to the guy bench pressing in the beginning. I was doing 415 lbs on a box squat and I had rookies in my group. My coach said I could do that weight so I decided to go with it. My group didn't set up the catch pins and I didn't notice that. After a few squats, I couldn't make it down to finish a squat and ended up folding in half (that's what my coach called it); this wouldn't have happened if my group had put the catch pins in. I was literally on the box, with the 415 lbs on my back and I'm leaning forward and no one helped me for the longest. My coach told me that if it wasn't for my very flexible back, I would either be paralyzed or dead rn.

The guy at 6:10 is actually super impressive to me. I'm a strongman, and I've done those types of workouts to work on actually just holding the weight for when I had to do yoke carries, or to prep for a new squat PR. It helps you get comfortable with supporting massive weight like that, and helps overcome mental hurdles. It also helps for practicing actually getting the weight off of the squat rack. His legs might be skinny, but boy howdy supporting 500 lbs is no joke. 10/10

Quick question for all the medically aware fellows out here on YT, how important are regular check ups with a family physician? I was raised to only go to the doctor if there was something wrong that acetaminophen, water, vitamin c, and some rest can't fix.
@AngelJohnson20002 жыл бұрын
it's said that you should go at least once a year for e regular check up with a family physician.
@emordnilap47472 жыл бұрын
For the best answer for you as an individual, you may want to ask your doctor. I definitely don't recommend waiting until you're sick. My mother found out she had cervical when she was 21, and sister found out she had melanoma a few years ago. Both from check ups when they didn't suspect they were sick. They were both caught early enough that they only needed surgery, not chemotherapy, or radiation. My sister didn't even need to stay in the hospital. She only needed local anesthetic, and just has a small scar on her shoulder.
@PikaEast2 жыл бұрын
At minimum once a year, but if there are health conditions in your family like cancers you should go more often pika
@Loserstakethebait2 жыл бұрын
Yearly like everyone said is recommended. However, if you're in the US it's not usually economically viable. Unless you have good insurance it isn't worth wasting over a $1000 to see a doctor when nothing is wrong. Their aren't many problems that don't cause symptoms, mainly just high blood pressure. Which can be checked at home for a 1 time purchase of $20. Edit: I hate that this is even an answer I had to give lol. Why hospitals are allowed to charge patients over 2000% of the actual costs is just disappointing and before someone says it; no it has nothing to do with capitalism. It would be corporatism if anything. But, regular doctor visits are something 50% of Americans struggle to afford so that part has to be accounted for.
@kateyare47082 жыл бұрын
I was told by a doctor - an M.D. - to avoid doctors if you are basically healthy. His reason? Doctors just look for and find problems that do not really require medical attention. Translation? Doctors are in business, just like auto mechanics who offer, e.g., "free" brake inspection.

As a former gym rat, some of these made me jealous (flexibility ones). Others made me cringe. The signs that tell you not to drop the weights were all over. I remember I put down a 20lb dumbell and it tipped on my inner ankle once. Nothing broken, but the pain was unforgettable

Dr. Mike at 1:25 is sitting there just listing off the possibly injuries and the aftermath while I was just laughing so much at the dumb mistake. I can't help but to laugh at sudden falls like that where the only reason they happened is a dumb mistake. I even laugh at myself anytime I do something similar like when I was in ski boots, carrying my skis, and walking on an icy sidewalk way too fast. People around me were concerned at the fall until I started laughing at it myself

Honestly fighting a doctor is the worst idea you could have. Because these people have vowed not to hurt anyone, however if they want to. They know exactly where to hit you to give you the most pain, and make it harder and harder for you to keep fighting. Without doing actual damage to you. It’s terrifying.

Your videos are amazing! Very informative and entertaining to watch. I don’t know if you respond to comments or not, but I’ve been wondering about a certain injury. If a person was doing the leg lifting, and their knees snapped, with the knee folding completely backwards, would they be able to walk again, and how long would it take?

I’ve had a few close calls with bench presses when my eating disorder is in full flair. Not eating and trying to bench a little too much - body says no. Luckily the bench at my gym has a safety arm at about the height of my chest so that when I relax my chest down the bar can sit onto so it doesn’t actually pin my neck 😂 then I can do an awkward squirm out from under it, do a little more chill exercises until I’m back on the eating wagon!

5:40 I used to be able to invert both ankles like that while remaining upright/standing. I've recently discovered I can no longer do it so I've been working on regaining that flexibility. I'm much older now though so I don't suspect I'll have the same range as I once did.
@aatashiwadoremi2 жыл бұрын
As someone who has EDS (a collagen disorder), PLEASE DO NOT try to regain that kind of flexibility!! It is not healthy for your joints! That kind of hypermobility can damage the tendons and ligaments, even if they seem fine. Trust me, you don’t want your ankles to do that. You can end up getting injuries from stretching things that aren’t supposed to stretch like that. (Flexibility is a good thing! I’m not saying don’t be flexible, only be cautious of being overly flexible!)

I've been in the situation where I can't get the bench press up and I was alone...I can't imagine the instinct to put it up over your head like that. I just rolled it to my belly and I was able to sit up and put one end to the floor. Sure it irritated the hell out of the skin on my chest and belly, hurt my hips a bit too, but at least I wasn't at risk of death.
