As a chemist, the “she is getting 87 out of 102 minerals” makes me laugh so much. There are 94 elements out of the 118 on the periodic table found in nature (the rest must be lab created). And trust me out of those 94, there’s a LOT you don’t want in your body

@@companymen42yes in Denmark we have both paid maternity leave and paternity leave 😊 I'm pregnant and my due date was yesterday, I already had 8 weeks of paid maternity leave before the child is even born. And my maternity leave ends may 2024. My husband has 12 weeks full paid. I believe (not 100% sure) the US is the only industrialized country without paid parental leave, which is very very sad in my opinion 😢
@milesbartlett
@milesbartlett 9 ай бұрын
@@companymen42 I'm guessing you are American, there are plenty of countries around the world that give paid parental leave when you give birth(some countries give to both parents), this is paid by the government, either directly or through the employer. The USA has no federal requirement for paid parental leave.

12:08 fun fact: in dietetics, we sometimes tell clients or patients who are constipated to add flaxseeds to soup, water or yoghurt, even for some childreen. Sometimes it really does help because of the amount of soluble fiber in those types of seeds. Of course it's not a miracle cure, increasing the overall fiber of diet, having plenty of water and exercising will also help, along with other recommendations.

Ooh that's bad - ANYONE with a significant change in the character of their headaches/migraines NEEDS to be referred to neurology! I work in health insurance - in the UK, not the US where you're completely dependant on it - and it's something that we always agree to cover (as long as you've paid your premiums & it's not specifically excluded on that individual plan, etc.) Weird headache/migraine = scans ASAP.

When i worked at a daycare, i would do sinus massages on congested babies so they could drink their bottles. Learning these massages saved my sanity. You can't drink a bottle if you can't breathe out your nose. A hungry baby doesn't sleep. And a hungry, sleepy baby is absolutely miserable.

When it comes to the chlorophyll, my mom went through one of those really intense natural medicine stages, and would give me some mixed with water on a regular basis. I remember that it tasted really pleasant, with a mild sweet taste, and it didn't change the texture of the water. And I was a teenager, so I don't remember having any benefits. But really, unless I just got lucky with the mixtures we got, 10/10 would drink it if it had health benefits.

This is one of the reasons when I have a extended migraine they take MRI every freaking time. I don't usually have them, so when I do it's out of the norm so the neuros like to get all the tests. Luckily for me I live in Finland so I pay less that 50€, no matter the tests they take.

Not as extreme, but recently my little brother went to the clinic for an ear infection and the doctor told my grandma there was nothing wrong. My grandma kept seeing a white bump in his ear, looking through the otoscope, but the doctor kept denying it. Eventually, they had to go to the hospital later due to the pain and the doctor there said she was right. I've always heard stories like this and thought it was ridiculous how medical professionals could be neglectful, never thought it'd hit close to home.

Same. I’ve had terrible unilateral migraines since I was a teenager, sometimes 2-3 per week. I was never offered any scans or any more significant diagnosis efforts. I was finally diagnosed with lupus last year which MIGHT be the cause of those (and other symptoms). This was after going to my gp and insisting on specific bloodwork and a referral to a rheumatologist. It’s still going to be a long process but it’s nice to have some direction. One thing I have learned through multiple experiences like this, is sometimes you need to (politely) TELL the doctor what scans/tests you want to have done. If they refuse, go to someone else - a good doctor will work with you to help solve things and not just write you off. It’s really not their fault, most doctors really care and want the best for their patients, but usually they are working off of a tiny snapshot of your experience. I started keeping a symptoms journal in the notes app in my phone with dates/length of time/severity/ patterns/photos and that made a big difference. The more data you can give the doctor, the better they will be able to help.

5:12 When Michael Bisping choked out Steve-O, the placement of his arm was actually not very good, making it more dangerous. The inside of his elbow should ideally line up in front of the trachea so that the pressure from his squeeze goes on those side arteries and not the windpipe, like you mentioned. Bisping's forearm was over the windpipe.

Hey Dr. Mike! I have a question. What exactly does the appendix do? I appreciate your efforts to fight medical misinformation and I’ve learned a lot from your videos. Thanks!
@hirukoiwakura142
@hirukoiwakura142 9 ай бұрын
hi, not sure if that was proven right or wrong or anything but back when I was studying biology, during anatomy lecture the same question was asked. the answer we got was that while nothing particularly certain, there was a seen worse digestion/absorption of food among babies and small children who had their appendix removed not long after they were born (it was removed because of some trend or study on it as it was assumed to have no role at all so removing it early was supposed to prevent those children from having a likely problem later in life - it was quite a long time ago, however, iirc). I never delved deeper into the topic myself but maybe you could find more about that study or popular appendix removal and find hopefully some update on them and hopefully an answer to your question as well

Hey Dr. Mike! At 66 years old I first time went to a dermatologist for a checkup. Had one mole removed. It was on my lower back and I didn't know it was there. Waiting for lab results. It took 6 weeks to get the appointment. At 66 I was probably the youngest patient in the waiting room.

Hey Dr. Mike. I watched one of your older vids recently. One on medical memes. Want to suggest you check with a psychiatrist on something you said. You advised a patient on an SSRI not to take their SSRI if they had 6-7 beers. Having worked in the substance use treatment field, I put it to you that the standard of care is to advise patients to continue taking their SSRI even when they are actively drinking, because the SSRI is somewhat preventative against the mental health damage of the ethanol.

Peaking of steatorhea, I used to do feacal fat testing. It was a 72 hour pooled collection. From memory (this was over 10 years ago now), more than 20g of fat passed in a day signifies fat malabsorption. Unfortunately, some patients thought they should ADD extra fat to their diet during the collection, rather than eat normally. We always knew when they did this though, because the sample would resemble a drip tray from under a grill that hadn't been cleaned in far too long.
