"Someone call 911" Never say someone. Point directly to a few people and tell them to call/get help. During a situation like that people wont take action because they are to busy staring. Which is a normal thing to do but then everyone is also busy thinking someone else is making the call Pointing to someone directly will be more likely to get an actual result.

Once my friend passed out in a restaurant, and I looked at the guy in the booth across from me dead in the eye and said (while standing up, reaching across the table, and holding my friend up so she doesn't suffocate in her guacamole while I'm straining against a herniated disc) "Go get a waitress" AND THE GUY STRAIGHT UP STANDS UP GRABS HIS BACKPACK AND RUNS AWAY Like 2 seconds later a girl and her friend actually helped me but I was so confused. My friend threw up on me and she was fine.
@EightJane5 жыл бұрын
@@202cardline I cant remember what they call this but I remember learning about it in my socially class. It's the same thing that makes people watch a horrible accident take place and no one does anything. They just don't want the responsibility.
@PARIS85005 жыл бұрын
Good catch. In addition to pointing and saying "you" I also describe what they're wearing so that there's no confusion. You in the blue shirt or lady in the red shoes.
@stipe9k5 жыл бұрын
@@EightJane It's called the bystander effect. It's caused either by pluralistic ignorance or diffusion of responsibility. In a nutshell, the former is people reacting calmly when witnessing a crime if other witnesses behave that way, and the latter is people feeling less responsible for helping the victim the more people there are around - they expect someone else to do it.

As a person living with autism, I can confirm that the hyper visualization of knowledge that he uses when performing surgery on the kid is extremely accurate for some people on the spectrum. It's actually so accurate that it shocked me when my girlfriend told me that it wasn't a normal way of processing information given that it’s the only way I have ever been able to think, as I’m more or less 100% visual when it comes to thinking.

Yeah, most humans have extremely limit conceptual reasoning. When I took an intelligence test I was told 2 things. I think like an engineer (from how I constructed) and the my spatial reasoning was "of the chart". I doubt it still is anymore. Life is cruel.

When i draft the programs on paper (because its a pain to get a full picture on the device itself) i SEE myself typing every letter, number, and command while just writing them on paper. I think people know this but since Dr. Mike didn't point it out :) "Someone call 911" - I was told in First Aid class NOT to do this. Instead, point to a person, and say "You in the red shirt, call 911!" (or whatever else you can use to identify them). If you shout "SOMEONE call 911" people might wait and see if someone else is doing it, hope that someone else will do it, etc. I thought this was great advice so I want people to know! I

i remember in school, we were taught to *POINT* at someone to call for 911 like: *"HEY YOU, IN THE RED SHIRT OR YOU IN THE BROWN JACKET CALL 911 NOW."* because apparently, people are too busy looking at the accident and won't do anything unless ordered to. edit (1): people have been commenting that it's actually because they're thinking other people have done it (calling 911). i just forgot to add it here. this was also said by my professor. we need to point at people so that 1.) no one would call another ambulance and have a few more people calling and have like 10 ambulances in the area, and 2.) to prevent the people not doing anything (or at least don't want to get involved).

As an autistic person, I just want to add that yes early intervention is the best thing to do, but a lot of programs that teach "social skills" (based on NT standards) disregard the actual reasons and feelings behind our autistic behavior, so the so called "result" can be only on the appearance/surface and not actually help the autistic in question, so that's something to watch out for.

thank u for pointing this out, i’m tired of allistics wanting us to be “more” normal
@drvurruct22742 жыл бұрын
@@ayypapi9366 Normal is very subjective, but I'd have to agree with you. I'm allistic (least I think so, its not like everyone gets that sort of checkup), but my father brought me up to look everyone in the eyes and sometimes when I do it I feel like I'm being weird, cause I end up feeling like I'm just staring at them. I notice that so many people just don't look at you when you speak to them, it must it be so much harder for the autistic, at least in some cases.

My son is autistic. It has taken me years of failure to learn how to accept his idiosyncrasies as okay and not necessary for me to change. It’s a massive struggle for the neurotypical to adapt to the people who are autistic and make the different social connections that they use, translating them to what that means in neurotypical. It’s like constantly translating body language where one version means things other than what I’ve come to associate with them. Parenting is hard anyways, prone to error with lasting consequence. Parenting an autistic child, even high functioning, is a whole other level of difficult. All I can say is thank God for my wife who has refused to let me not learn better.

This, like of course there are some things we must learn to do. Like if something stops us from functioning then we need to work on it, but forcing yourself to be normal or forcing yourself to do things that make you uncomfortable that are not at all beneficial to do are just not needed. Like if how you are stops you from having a job then you need to work on that (assuming it’s possible to help) but clapping your hands when your excited doesn’t need to be, it’s others fault if they find that weird not you.

"unusual" amounts of recall for specific items such as facts, numbers, dates, and other specific list type items happens frequently with autism. i, for one, memorize lists of numbers like phone numbers, credit cards, and all of the passcodes in my family with little effort but it also becomes a problem when it clogs up my memory or i feel like i need to recite the numbers as a calming mechanism. it's not a good idea to start reciting your social security number out loud just to feel better /j (i haven't actually done this specific one, i usually write numbers down and usually skip that one. credit cards are fair game tho)

As a mildly autistic 18M (almost), The fact that he can memorize relatively irrelevant information is something that's apparent. I haven't gotten to this degree myself but there are a lot of cases I've been told where memorizing has gone to this degree. The reason why it happens is because when we're young, we hardly know anything. So, there are a lot of seemingly irrelevant things we can find that we can suddenly be very interested in, to the point we're "off in our own world". To explain this, coming from my experience. At a young age, when you find something interesting, we can get so focused and dedicated to learning it that we're almost completely ignorant of the world around us. Which is why we can sometimes spot things others don't, I guess.

I’m an aspiring doctor with Aspergers disorder (High Functioning ASD) and this show, the Netflix original “Atypical” and Doctor Mike have inspired me even more.

As an Aspie teacher, this show brings me to tears so often. I connect with the main character so much.

Hi, just to say functioning labels are informal and offensive to a lot of others with autism. It merely refers to cognitive functioning, iq, whereas autism classifications refer to day to day functioning (as in the ability to meet your own basic or complex needs). People often are told they are high functioning because aspergers has negative associations with the researcher, but the profiles have also been discarded - as they did not account for change.

@@foreigner5142 Well I mean, Box Cutter & Knife are different. Knives are smoother (unless you’re talking about ridged or mincer knifes), while boxes have teeth.

If Mike is married, he would be watching a normal movie with his companion and a medical scene could pop up, and he’ll just say “wrong” and explain for a long time and they’ll be like “so”

Lol. My ex boyfriend was a med student and whenever we watch something like this he would try so hard not to talk about it.. I would pause the movie and be like "it's okay, you can explain it to me if you want to " 😂😂

Eh I find that stuff fascinating, but then I will also rip into a movie on the subjects I'm familiar with, when they get stuff wrong... especially egregiously wrong.

Try watching a movie set in ancient Rome with my husband. LOL Personally, I love that. Much better than any of the history lessons in school. :D If you care about something, it's not easy to set your knowledge aside and suspend all your disbelief (As in, "I can't believe they did not get that right!")

my dad does this. hes an eye doctor (i forgot how to spell the technical term) but everytime we watch a movie, he goes on explaining things when he sees people who are crosseyed, have weird coloring in the sclera (white part of the eye) and other things. it used to be annoying but we've gotten used to it
