I am not a mosquito-ologist, but I can tell you that when my family went on holiday to Malta a couple of months after my mum finished chemotherapy, she was the only one in our party who didn't get ravaged by mosquitoes. I gave CPR to a bird many years ago. It fell into a water bucket and was floating motionless in the water. I took it out, held it upside down by its legs and gently squeezed (as in CPR) it's "chest". Water poured out. After a few minutes the bird revived and after another few minutes it flew away. I often wondered if the little guy survived or maybe got pneumonia and died. Whatever happened it was a very long time ago.

i recently found a dying duck. It was in the water and struggling to keep its head over the water. At first i assumed that it was sleeping (i have almost never seen a duck sleep or learnt about them so i wouldn't know) so i left it. I tried turning it over after a bit but it just went back. I thought something was wrong so i brought it on land and gave it cpr. Later on, others had seen what happened and called some people over. They took it away in a towel and (hopefully) it survived.

I currently work in a mosquito research lab in the department of UF Entomology. Mosquitos are attracted to the carbon dioxide in our breath. Interestingly, mosquitos are attracted to those with a higher metabolic rate (which explains why some people are basically mosquito magnets). Carbon dioxide is also a popular choice for various mosquito control devices and many use dry ice for this reason!

Related to the upside down roller coaster: When I was nine, I rode one of these with my two older sisters at the fairgrounds and it stopped like this for five minutes or so. We were all freaked out, but it became really scary when me and my sisters realized that my seat belt was not tight enough across my body so I began slipping. They struggled to hold me up and the entirety of everyone on the ride were screaming for the operator to bring the roller coaster carts down because I was in danger of falling to my death. The operator had stepped out and was nowhere to be seen for that five minutes. Eventually the ride was brought down and everyone got off. I remember so disoriented and scared my sisters brought me back to my parents. I don't remember what happened after that, but I kind of hope that the operator was fired.

I used to work as a bagger in a supermarket, and one woman came in complaining about the cost of organic food -- while buying hundreds of dollars in only organics -- but said she "had to" because she believed she was "allergic to all GMOs of any kind" and "can't trust that conventional produce isn't really GMOs". I tried briefly to explain that's not how GMOs or biology work, she was confident that it was, and I gave up and sighed. Regarding the gummies section: it's also true for melatonin gummies. Multiple brands were tested and found to contain way more active ingredient than what their labels promised. The active ingredient breaks down the longer the product is on the shelf, so they overdose the product so it stays potent enough to work. This is especially problematic since there are melatonin gummies specifically for kids. Giving them a few milligrams more than you think you're giving them might not be that dangerous, but there have been several cases of small children getting poisoned by eating an entire bottle. Chubbyemu even has a video about that subject. I get the supplement makers love for gummies--promising better absorption than pills or capsules--but they just seem like a really risky product given that gummies were originally candy. Whether it's gum drops, gummy bears, or sour patch kids... that's what kids think of when they see them and chew them, right? Of course, if the child is old enough, you can teach them the importance of knowing the difference. But what if they're not old enough to understand that conversation? What if they're curious, anyway?

people who study mosquitos (Culicidology) say: they like when you have a strong smell (like BO smells and breath cuz of CO2), but blood type preference in various populations does appear to exist. If you're being targeted you're either expelling more of what they like to hunt us with (ie: you're breathing faster or something), or they like your blood type better than your friends'.

It actually can be a very good idea to wash your fruit (especially strawberries) in vinegar water. It kills mold spores, which means your berries or other delicate fruits are very unlikely to go moldy on you. For the same reason, you can sometimes use vinegar to deal with, eg, a mild yeast infection, or dandruff. The yeasties don't like the acidity.

While I was at my sickest (whenever I could make it outside, I was bedridden for a time) everyone else would get eaten up and I wouldn’t have a single bite. I’ve done IVIG, I’m now close to remission, and I just got my first mosquito bite. Honestly, it made me really happy, it felt like a sign that I’m actually getting better ❤

I'm no expert but I'm one of those freaky mosquito-magnet people, and according to my research, it's about exhaling more carbon dioxide than other people (hence obesity being a risk factor for skeeter-magnetism). It's insane, people often don't believe me until they see me covered head to toe in the most effective decently-safe repellents I can muster and still swatting dozens of skeeters on my body while no one else gets touched. And the skeeter species in my area that are most resistant to my preferred repellents are the ones I have the worst reactions to (welts up to 2-3" diameter sometimes). It's really crappy to deal with. I have to take quercetin about 3/4 of the year to mitigate the reactions and still smother myself in safe repellents and often still use DEET sprays on surrounding surfaces, just to avoid full-body torment.

I'm not a mosquito-ologist (lol) but I remember coming across theories that mosquitos are more attracted to O+ blood, and to people who are larger or exercising, because they're breathing out more carbon dioxide and following trails of elevated carbon dioxide plays into how mosquitos track down a target.

Not a mosquito scientist, but I have strong swelling reactions to mosquito bites (concerned about developing a more severe allergic reaction) so my doctor and I have been looking into ways to make me less likely to get bit. Pheromones, blood type, stress, and diet can all play a role in the smell of your sweat, which can attract more mosquitoes. Citronella in lotion or soap, long sleeves and pants, eating more garlic, and adding a vanilla extract perfume (not sweet smelling fair warning) has helped me. These solutions don't work for everyone, but they've helped keep down bite frequency while we try to figure out my immune reaction to the bites. My experience and solutions are all North American based, and it's possible the species of mosquitoes in different environments may react differently. Stay safe and hopefully keep the mosquitoes away!

3:37 To be fair, I've noticed a huge change in the taste of fruits these days. I've always washed my fruit exactly the same since I was a kid. For some reason I noticed the same very strong flavor present on all of my fruits and vegetables. It made it so I couldn't actually eat them because it made me lose my appetite. My wife started washing them with baking soda added to the water and letting it soak for a minute. The flavor was gone. It just tasted like fresh fruit. I'm convinced there's been a change in the pesticides being used and I was tasting that (or my pallet developed more for some reason) and washing with baking soda removed that extra funk from the pesticides.

About mosquitoes .... 1st off I'm not a clinical expert. I used to get bit up the worst in my family. My dad would rarely get but at all. At some point in my adulthood, to my delight, the little buggers lost interest in me. For a while I thought it was because I ate a lot of garlic but over time I started noticing that it really didn't matter what I did or did not eat. I tried to research this every now and then but there wasn't really anything scientific I could find untill I came across an article that made a lot of sense. It claimed that one could work up a tolerance to mosquito bites if they were to get bitten a lot, like excessively. Which is what happened to me as a kid, I always got it the worst. I don't know for sure about my dad but he did spend his young childhood summers in the swamp area of Florida and very likely got "eaten alive" by bugs there so he too may have built up a tolerance. This doesn't answer why folks like me got but more than others, but if it's true it would answer why I rarely get bit anymore.

Hey, my uncle was a semi-pro power lifter before arthritis took him down, I used to train with him a lot back when he could, he taught me a lot about the kinematics of the human body in relation to working out, though by no means am I extensively educated in the field. He only knows about the difference because when he started out training in powerlifting he was using the softer metal and was getting a lot of bend/inertia rebound, which, for a powerlifter isn't ideal, powerlifting you want a stiff bar because you're training your body to be able to handle that weight purely with muscle force and strength training the parts of your body that take the loud most, with minimal focus on the technique that makes it easier to do whereas olympic lifting and other things like bodybuilding rely on the soft ductile bars because it helps absorb the kinetic inertia; Olympic lifters and body builders rely on solely being ABLE to achieve the task of lifting given under the set parameters so inertia absorption is ideal because you're saving that extra load applied which conserves energy in-between lifts and on the up squat when you're trying to lift over the head I could be very wrong, but by my understanding the bar bens in those weight lifting comps on purpose, While they are lifting insane amounts of weight which would naturally bend a bar especially with the applied inertial energy on the down squat and up squat ; it's not just the insane weight causing the bend. The metal they use for that level of weight and context is specifically alloyed to be able to be very ductile so it bends and absorbs energy without weakening the grain structure of the metal. In other words, it would be much more impressive if the bar was stiff. With all the math applied you're saving an additional required force to move that weight by about ~12-18% of the max weight being lifted, when averaged I believe that's ~105lbs that's deducted on simply the down squat, pushing up depending on applied force will change that percentage either larger or smaller so let's call that average a minimum. Obviously, yes the down squat would also vary but it would have much less variance so I kept the averaging quite simple Powerlifters like to make fun and call that cheating. Of course it takes a lot of power, and training to move that weight but to do it with a stiff bar requires even more power and training is all I'm saying.

I've done a lot of research on this. Mosquitos are attracted to humidity, concentrated CO2 levels (they literally spaz out around sodas), and specific body odors that the body gives off. That particular chemical is found in different amounts on people's skin throughout the population, more or less when sweating. I would also assume they are attracted to body heat a tiny amount. Use deet on your clothing when camping, people. But only when the deet is dried.

A couple of years ago, around 2019, I started losing an extreme amount of weight - going from 120 to 100 lbs in about a month, all the while eating constantly. I just knew something had to be wrong. Finally my blood work showed my blood chemistry was way off - similar to someoe who had severe eating disorder. I had a small growth on my pancreas, luckily, non-cancerous, that was removed. However, the remaining part of my pancreas was still not doing what a pancreas does. I was still losing weight, until I was down to about at my lowest 85 pounds. I was started on TPN, 24/7. There was a insertion in my upper arm with a catheter that ran close to my heart. That's where the TPN was administered. I was on this for about six months, at home. I was told that this type of insertion is almost impossible to keep clean or sterile in a normal home atmosphere. So of course, after a couple of months, I came down with sepsis. Back into the hospital. After being on the TPN 24/7 for about five months, I was switch to only 12 hours a day. When I finally started gaining some weight back, we went to first TPN every other day and then every third day until I could finally get off of it. That stuff really saved my life.

We would joke that we wanted him along whenever we did something outdoors, because once they caught a whiff of him, they ignored the rest of us - he would literally look like he had chicken pox afterwards. Then he had a medical crisis that resulted in him being put on blood thinners. Guess what? Now mosquitoes won't touch him. Our hypothesis is that the blood thinners fundamentally changed some aspect of his blood that was making him a prime target. No way to know for sure, but we all found that to be a very interesting development.
