Here in NZ we had the Spaceman sticks. I think they're still around but they're plain white sticks now. Early 90s half of the employees would take multiple smoke breaks throughout the shift, leaving the non smokers with more work and losing about a total of 40 minutes for a smoke break time per shift. I clocked a medium smoker and followed them out into the sunshine and fresh air and returned when they did. Manager caught me outside once and was "why are YOU out here?" I informed him I was taking a non smoke break, was there a problem? We got more breaks and smokers had to use those breaks to smoke. Benefited everyone.

Re: the Merman Doctor - it's from December Diamonds, who makes Christmas ornaments aimed at gay men. One of their most famous lines is the Mermen, which has all kinds of different mermen in different outfits. I think the one in the video is supposed to a veterinarian (hence the stethoscope and dog). Just a heads up, some of them are quite raunchy, though I haven't seen any that are explicit. They do also make other kinds of ornaments too, but the gay mermaids are the most famous. Some of them are quite gloriously creative, and the names are often punny

Presumably, we don't do anything all that crazy anymore... but honestly, we could probably just look at some pre-2000 stuff to see at least SOME dumb stuff. You know, unless we get into the whole over-prescribing and opiates epidemic or whatever. But those are (at least seemingly) mostly doctors TRYING to legitimately treat things somewhat sensibly, they just may be too quick to prescribe things or prescribe things that are too potent and addictive too quickly before exhausting other options. Although, I mean, even medical cannabis/THC use wasn't legal in most states like 10 years ago? So one of the better alternatives they could've attempted to treat with wasn't something they could legally recommend, let alone prescribe. Actually dumb/crazy treatments probably got phased out over the 1900s, I'd think.
