@@MiddleEarthGirl75 It kind of sucks because I feel like it may have to do with burnout or as the saying goes "when you hear hoof steps, think horses not zebras" meaning when a patient presents with some certain symptoms, don't get anchored on this one rare diagnosis and rule out the common illnesses first. I definitely don't agree with what your doctor did, because I had a gastroenterologist (stomach doctor) tell me that my problem of three years would be fixed if I didn't take so many supplements (FYI I had only taken them for 2 months when I had went to see him) and his dismissive behavior had me looking for another GI doctor IMMEDIATELY. So I agree, some doctors need to be more clear with their thought process, or otherwise I am going to think they don't care. Or that they're discriminating because of my cruddy insurance or my age or whatever.

I was briefly a secretary in a doctors office. The doctor not only had Dr. handwriting, but he had arthritis in his thumbs. His handwriting was unspeakable. I tried to do ICD9 coding for him. I was trying to figure out on a patient’s notes where it said “patient is still crying.” I finally gave up and asked the more experienced office worker what the rest of it said. It actually said “patient is still congested.”

As a phlebotomist, the amount of time I waste with illegible Dr's handwriting is absolutely mind blowing, it can turn a ten minute procedure into a 20 minute phone call as we all try to work out what on earth the Dr was requesting. The other one is when Dr's just make up their own acronyms for things. I once had a Dr write "RPM" on the form. I called the lab and they were like "revs per minute?" Anyway, lab ended up having to contact the dr, it was just a standard kidney test. Some of the funniest handwriting one was when my boss said in all seriousness to look at it upside down because sometimes then you could work it out. We did work that one out, it was blood group. Something else we do is ask the patient, like if I think I know what something is I will say "does it make sense for your Dr to be testing you for this?" This once backfired very, very badly (but also hilariously) when I asked a patient "does it make sense for your Dr to be testing you for coeliac disease?" And the patients earnestly talked about how the local health department was poisoning his water to make him fart a lot and make him smell bad and discredit him so that the judge wouldn't believe him when he went to court to accuse his psychiatrists of following him. The poor man was obviously experiencing psychosis. However, since he appeared to be having symptoms of farting, I ascertained that he was probably being tested for coeliacs disease and went ahead with the blood test while he continued to talk about the health department. Sweet guy, but good lord that was one day where keeping a straight face was difficult.

Like how someone diagnosed with a concussion might have a symptom of lethargy (tiredness/sluggishness). Diagnosis is comprised of symptoms. Because jaundice is a symptom, it could fall under more than one diagnosis. To be sure what's actually causing the jaundice, it's best to see a doctor as soon as you can (some conditions that cause jaundice are life-threatening, so you shouldn't take a symptom like that lightly).
