Hippocrates was a Greek physician and philosopher from 400 BC, widely regarded as the father of medicine and for the physician’s mantra of “First do no harm," as well as“ The greatest medicine of all is teaching people not to need it.”
More and more studies are confirming this to be accurate and underscoring the importance of nutrition and exercise and their role in preventing diseases and optimizing physical and mental health. So that might not exactly be news to you. But the studies are also honing in on the EXACT foods we should be eating and WHY we should be eating them.
With that said, there are a ton of misconceptions and misinformation that persists in this field, particularly about what constitutes a healthy diet. When there is so much deception out there, so much information that contradicts itself, fats are bad, fats are good, carbs are bad, carbs are good, and so on….what ends up happening is many people have unhealthy eating habits, even when they’re TRYING to eat healthily, or THINK they’re eating healthy. Also, the nutrient content of the food is not on most people’s minds. Neither is what’s been DONE to the food.

Many critical factors go into your decision-making process when deciding on what you put in your stomach. How accessible or convenient is it? What does it cost? Is it acceptable to the society you live in? Is it familiar to you? Do you know how to cook it? Does it taste good?
And last but not least, how much time does it take? Ultimately, unhealthy eating habits lead to chronic inflammation and chronic disease, and people simply do not feel their best. In the short term, unhealthy food makes you feel lethargic. It leads to things like metabolic syndrome, which goes hand-in-hand with diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure), high cholesterol, fatty liver disease, obesity, HEART disease, even dementia, and some types of cancer!
It’s estimated that 88% of the US adult population is metabolically ill! The VAST majority of adults are metabolically sick. And maybe someone who is not overweight thinks to themselves, “well, that doesn’t apply to me because I’m not overweight.” But that’s not necessarily the case because there is something called thin on the outside, fat on the inside, and they are, in fact, metabolically ill. Why are so many people sick metabolically? Metabolic syndrome develops as insulin resistance increases, which happens when we eat unhealthy food. Yes, exercise plays a role, but not to the extent of nutrition. Unhealthy eating leads to fat being deposited in places that don’t belong, like the liver, and inside muscles.
But what are healthy and unhealthy eating? And how do we know if it’s truly healthy or not? To answer that, we have to one, define what nutrition is, two, understand how nutrition studies are conducted, and three, how to interpret a study. That’s how we get to the truth.
Nutrition is a term that refers to the nutrients and foods they occur in, how the food is ingested, absorbed, and used in the body, and its effects on the body. Nutrients are categorized as macronutrients, micronutrients, fiber, and water. Macronutrients are carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, which provide energy to the body, and are required in RELATIVELY large amounts. Their intake and expenditure are measured in terms of calories, which are units of energy. In comparison, micronutrients are needed in much SMALLER amounts. We’re talking about vitamins and minerals required by the body. They don’t provide power but are usually necessary for metabolic processes related to the body’s use of macronutrients. They also serve many other roles that are essential for normal body function.
Fiber is not absorbed, so fiber is technically not classified as a nutrient, but it’s SUPER important for gut health and overall health. Both soluble and insoluble fiber. Macronutrients are typically highly bioavailable, meaning a large proportion of the nutrient is absorbed during digestion. On the other hand, micronutrients have much more variable bioavailability that depends on many factors.

Very interesting subject worth keeping it talked about again and again. It reminds me of Dr Seignalet's book "l'alimentation ou la troisième médecine" published in 1996 already! Exactly what is preconised nowadays. Stunningly precursor in a time where the information network was not what it is now. Also stunningly honest since dr Seignalet warned about the limitations of his diet, he underlined the diseases his diet won't cure. At the time a bit revolutionary in the medical sanhedrin since only terminal patients were sent to him plus suddenly lots of his conservative colleagues ceased to talk to him, considering him like a charlatan and a lunatic. Rip dr Seignalet, nobody's a prophet in his own country...

Eat your vegetables folks! Legumes and meat are good too. Also not all fruit is created equal - strawberries, banana, blueberry and lemons are a lot healthier than mango or oranges which are very high in sugar and limited in micro nutrients. Nobody gets fat eating plain strawberries all day. They are mostly fiber. I really hated lumping fruits as all equal.

@@JLilliquist True Fruits and vegetables are vastly different in their carb, nutrient, fiber and oil content. Even the types of carbs (sugars) are vastly different. Potatoes for example are worse than pure table sugar for people with diabetes. Strawberries you mentioned have a compound that blocks the absorption of some of it's sugars so even what you see in the lab results isn't so accurate. One reason they are Keto friendly.

By the way, they were all overweight. I have been cooking from scratch since 14 years old when my parents taught me how to put out old-fashioned meals that were full of vegetables and not just meat. I’m still cooking that way, and I’m in my 70s. Fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, are my go to foods before anything else. Thanks for listening.

I read somewhere, years ago, that you should always read the list of ingredients on the packet. If there's any word that you can't pronounce or don't know what it is, then don't buy it because it means it's been processed and got non food chemicals in it. I've followed that advice over the years and ended up with a very similar diet to the one he describes. 😊

My variant on that: if my grandmother couldn't pronounce it, then it doesn't belong in my meal. I've followed that for 35 years now. I was an organic vegetarian for 25 years, now an organic omnivore in a three-way blend of Paleo 2.0 / Autoimmune protocol / Mediterranean. My blood work is stellar, except for the high LDL and non-HDL cholesterols. Amusingly, those both LOWERED when I went from vegetarian back to omnivore. Doc still isn't happy about it, but last scans continue to show *no* atherosclerosis, so I'm good with above-normal cholesterol. I'm 63, and healthier than nearly everyone half my age at work.

@@stanj7223 I wouldn't say we all are. From the research I have seen, in order for the intolerance to be expressed, there must be the presence of gluten, the gene, and damage to the microbiota. If all 3 things are not present, then the intolerance/disease will not manifest. Damage to the microbiota is usually what sets the intolerance off in people these days. The damage can come from eating a low fibre diet since childhood, antibiotics, lack of exercise and even psychological problems and trauma can cause negative alterations in the gut microbiota independent of diet. Health is very complex, and so a holistic view on the health of the organism is required. Unfortunately these days people are looking for quick relief and comfort, rather than seeking understanding and looking at the organism and life as a whole. Most turn to elimination and fad diets, supplements and all kinds of pseudo-science.

I think Sten Ekberg videos are the most scientific. Also see the 60 Minutes KZbin video called Living into Your 90s. Dr. Berg has some good videos about Vitamin D and sunlight, and other benefits from sunlight.

I appreciate very much the fact that you are in MD. Please always mention your research sources so that your viewer can do their due diligence . Further as an MD do you have any nutrition and diet education and if so please speak to all of those qualifications when doing a video that sites nutrition, diet, and exercise as treatment because MD's traditionally have little or no training and experience in these fields. And, again, I appreciate that you're an MD discussing topics that you know about from a medical doctor's point of view as well as bringing in the right way to approach medicine and healing. thank you for taking on this topic please list all your research so that your viewers can research sources.

I'd be interested in hearing your views regarding fasting. My particular interest is in regard to reducing insulin resistance, not losing weight.

Skipping meals occasionally is a very good practice. Some do it rigorously and religiously and rigidly. Best is to know your body signals. If you’re really not hungry, and it’s meal time, no need to eat.

Nourishing whole foods, with a balanced lifestyle are key. Skipping meals and avoiding all carbs may not result in best health. Find a way of eating that provides energy, good digestion and sleep. While weight loss is helpful, dieting may leave you depleted of essential nutrients and minerals. Carbs really help with digestion and balanced blood sugar. Think lower carb, rather than zero carb.

Awesome Video Dr Mike! Processed foods also contain chemicals, coming from a chemical engineer. The most important thing I learned working with chemicals is that we generally don't want to ingest them. There's a great deal of good nutritional advice and 10000 times more bad advice, the best option is to eat as Dr Mike has suggested whole foods pescatarian, flexitarian or lacto-vegetarian, eat colorful vegetables, not just green ones.
