My understanding is that increased insulin **isn't** the **cause** of insulin resistance ... it is the **result** insulin resistance. That is to say insulin resistance is due to excess intramyocellular lipids (fats clogging up the muscle cells' insulin receptors / pathways, likely caused by 1] consumption of excess fat and/or 2) consumption of excess fructose which converts to fat in the liver which then circulates in the blood and is taken up by muscle and other cells) making insulin ineffective at getting glucose into the cells, so the body produces **more** insulin to try to force the glucose in.

Dr.Mike, I love your informative videos & watch them often. This one about dementia hits close to home. My mother (b.1929) was a health 'nut'. We grew up with my Mom providing us the basic Mediterranean diet, very few sweets, no sodas, lots of water, lots of exercise and outside activities. She was diagnosed with young onset Alziemer's at 60 and died at 73. I was told that early Alz is heritary (I'm now 69 w/no signs) but please explain whether 'healthy living' or 'not' would have any impact on this type of Alz. I wonder if there's a distinction to be made between older aged Alz, and the type my Mom had. Thanks for any information you may have about this.

In the video you point to at the end of this one, you talk a lot about beta amyloid proteins and suggest lowering fat intake as a way to control the risk for Alzheimer's. In this video, you basically sponsor the ketogenic diet along with certain fats. These seem to be two contradictory messages. The medical ketogenic diet doesn't stipulate the types of fats you eat. Today, a hundred years after it was invented, the ketogenic diet has been turned into a lifestyle trend. I used the ketogenic diet to get my epilepsy under control. It saved my life. It didn't stop every seizure, but I no longer had daily clusters. So, am I more or less at risk for Alzheimer's for eating 200g of fat a day for years? Fats of all kinds, not just "Mediterranean" fats but cheeses, lamb, mackerel, chicken with skin, ghee in addition to countless lbs of nuts and seeds.

The main factor is the omega-3 to omega-6 index that becomes way too lopsided in favor of omega-6 fatty acids. This is what creates too much inflammation and will eventually affect the brain, because the brain itself is made of fat. If you want omega-3 fatty acids, it is essential to get a high amount of EPA and DHA fatty acids. Be careful about this because most fish oil doesn't contain enough. Also ideally it should be in the triglyceride form, which is more easily absorbed by the body. It's also a good idea to reduce your consumption of junk food and processed foods because these are the biggest source of unhealthy omega-6 fatty acids.

And are you SURE you wouldn't be complaining just as much if your formerly homeless neighbors were receiving lots of monetary aid from the government and you weren't? Oh yes, not good at all. 30 years ago or so, I was wondering from room to room and not knowing why I was in the next room once getting to the next room, plus constantly losing my train of thought, and short term memories at times were reduced to zero, plus no longer knowing the names of people I had known for years, not even being able to spell my brothers name anymore, no longer able to recognize all words as words and thus I had to read them letter by letter. Typing was now reduced to single finger typing. I was no longer able to write. Place 3 pills in my hand and there was now too many for me to identify the quantity, since the max I could recognize now, was a quantity of 2. Plus I had lost a good deal of physical awareness, and had body stiffness and loss of fluid like bodily movement. My pupils took up to 2 hours to respond to a change in light intensity. And the list goes on and on and on.... But once the cause was removed from my body ( Something the medical industry had said was completely safe ), it took me 8 years to re-learn, to re-cover, but I never did relearn how to write, other than write my signature. Can anyone guess what it was that was removed !

Not buying into the sugar hating campaign. Case #1 I consumed BEYOND HIGH volume sugar from a young age (5) well into my late 30s and then cut it down by 75% and my memory recall was 7 fold better while consuming high volume sugar compared to now in my 50s with marginal amount of sugar. Case #2 Grandfather didn't have a high sugar diet. It was mostly carnivore diet for 60 years and he developed Alzheimer's and passed away from complications of the disease. I am a Sleep Study Specialist and have done extensive research on Alzheimer's. What causes Alzheimer's are predominantly two factors. One is physical (genetic chemistry) and the other is psychological. The first factor is losing social connections like losing friendships and having deep emotional baggage like regret. The other factor is when the body does not clear the beta and tau plaque from the brain and it builds up until it starts to push it's way into and over the existing tissue and that is the result of long term sleep deprivation caused by chronic sleep interruptions and guess what ? Grandfather had sleep apnea for 40 years before he started wearing a CPAP but by the time he started wearing it the process already started so my grandfather's case matches the true parameters of the disease
