Definitely not years or even months. If you know what genes may be at fault you can get results in hours (if you are a researcher you can usually get your results next day or the day after). It’s not even that hard to do if you have the equipment and materials!

The time it takes to complete genetic testing varies depending on how much information you want. Knowing the symptoms they could target information that relates to such symptoms while ignoring genes that don't have influence over in this case the heart. It's only when you do a whole genome test, basically looking for every possible harmful genetic change without discrimination, that tests can take months to a year for results. Even then it's not the test that takes so long it's the analysis and understanding of that data

Reese was never going to end up with Joey. He was too nice a guy and he was a lab tech. Female medical graduate interns might spend time and date lab techs, but if she's serious about getting a partner, he's nowhere on the list. For male doctors, the marriage pool gets bigger as they are willing to date down. That doesn't happen for female doctors because you will find that although they "might" date down in the early stages of their careers when they're broke and struggling, almost all would never consider marrying down. Poor Joey. He really cared for her and she liked him, but I'm pretty sure way in the back of her mind, she knew he was only what she needed... at the time. Unless her medical career crashed and burned completely, It was inevitable that she would break up with him eventually.
