@@Yesica1993 I've rewatched this episode a lot over the years, but I mostly watch Star Trek, Babylon 5, and Stargate: SG-1. Ever watched/or heard of those shows. I still watch Doctor Who, but usually my Dad is the one who is interested in watching it, along with my younger brother depending on their moods. My Mom isn't that much into Doctor Who as she wants to watch something a little less brainy, less dark/scary, less shooting, stabbing, less bloody, and less violent. She prefers watching Mythbusters for example. I still prefer my shows and movies to have a ton of action packed scenes and jump scares too like in movies like for example Battle: Los Angeles (2011 film), Independence Day (1996), War of The Worlds (1953 version produced by George Pal, directed by Byron Haskin War of The Worlds version and also the 2005 Steven Spielberg War of The Worlds version), War of The Worlds: Goliath (2012), Jaws (1975), Jaws 2 (1978), The Terminator (1984), Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991), Toy Soldiers (1991), Disney's Tom and Huck (1995), The Goonies (1985), The Day After Tomorrow (2004), Predator (1987), Die Hard (1991), Die Hard 2 (1992), Air Force One (1997 film), Stargate (1994 film), Disney's The Rocketeer (1991), Disney's Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001 film), Disney's The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe (2007), Disney's The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008), Godzilla (1998), Godzilla (2014), Jumanji (1995), Zathura: A Space Adventure (2005 film), Disney's Mulan (1998), and also Reign of Fire (2002 film, that's one of the best Dragon movie's) for example. No not really, the first time the 9th doctor was angry and spiteful was to the guy in the 2nd episode who downloaded the stock market data and tried to give it to his earlier self and got punished vindictively by the doctor for ultimately what, trying to secure prosperity for his family as if that was such a big freaking crime. That was not a good episode and a very childish response from the doctor. This however, is not so petty.

That's definitely not true. Baal from stargate SG1 was a good villain too, and what made him a good villain was that he wasn't really all evil, he was reasonable even, and understandable, and showed the "heroes" weren't all good too. THAT is what makes a good villain. A villain that simply makes the hero look good is a bad villain, as bad as a mary sue is a bad hero. So wherever you read that, they could literally not have been more wrong.

“And the coward survived.” I may be an outlier…but I don’t think the Dalek was referring to the Doctor here. That’s certainly how the Doctor interpreted it, but I genuinely believe that the Dalek was talking about itself. That three days of burning and fifty years of isolation and torture had actually driven the Dalek into such a state that it actually, genuinely was trying to reach out to the Doctor here, even if the Dalek itself didn’t realize it.

Cool little detail I've just noticed. When the Doctor and the Dalek are speaking, the Doctor's face is in the centre of the Dalek's view, as it's playing attention to him. When Van Statten tries to talk to it, he's very much out of centre, with over half his face outside the main circle, since the Dalek's just pointing towards him, not actually looking AT him.

This is the level of writing we expect from Doctor Who. The complexity, and interesting thoughtful themes rather than common, out-of-the-box ones. Chilling dialogue, music (although Segun Akinola's music is actually pretty good) and set design, as well as realistic (rather than stylised) VFX and a heart-pumping pace. I'm not saying all of Chibnall's Who is bad (Kerblam! and Spyfall are some fun examples) but I just wish Chibnall would at least bring back some of the older writers, especially Shearman.

No, that's the level of writing I expect from doctor who in 2005. Only then though. That was their year. @@obiwankenobi687 The writing _is_ bad, but it's moreso about the one-sidedness and lack of subtlety than anything else (although they have made quite a few sexist "jokes" aimed at men over the years ("Dear Lord, how do you cope with all that ego?" "The universe is full of testosterone - trust me, it's unbearable," etc.) without any aimed at females to balance them out, so what he said wasn't entirely untrue - it's certainly not "very, very, very, very wrong and stupid". @@obiwankenobi687 Christ - it must be wrong if you've added an extra "very". Joking aside, now that you mention it, I do remember those instances, but there is a definite difference between the ones I mentioned and the ones you mentioned: when he's insulting Clara, his rudeness isn't explicitly directed towards an entire group of people - he is just saying rude things to _her_ , and imo it succeeds in being funny. He also is very direct to everyone, regardless of who they are. In my examples, the rude comment is generalised and directed at every member of that group (which just so happens to be men, and there happen to be men watching, too! What excellent use of subtlety). Since these are going after about half of the people watching, it's understandable that the reactions from that portion of the audience will range from cringing (which is understandable) to being genuinely upset (which means you should grow up), whereas if anybody is getting upset at the Doctor for saying something specifically to one person who doesn't even exist on their behalf, they probably have some insecurities to work on (a bit like the people who get genuinely upset over the show's obsession with white men - yeah, it sucks, but who cares what the writers of a show thinks? You do you).

This scene shows how well it can work when an actor has a good sense of who his character is and makes his own decisions based on that. The script said for him to be flippant toward, but obviously Eccleston knew it would make more sense for him to be filled with rage and despair over the Time War.
@MythicFox
@MythicFox Жыл бұрын
Looking back, reviving the series starring with the Ninth Doctor was a brilliant choice. Eccleston's Doctor is very unlike the original series' Doctors, especially in the beginning. It gave the show room to build something up on its own before slowly easing back into something like the rhythms of the original show. Even when it feels like the classic series -- "End of the World" and "The Unquiet Dead" stand out in this regard -- there's an anger and sadness within this Doctor like you didn't see before. And then, over time, with a proper companion by his side and able to experience the universe through her, we see the Doctor slowly remember who he was, so by the time he regenerates into David Tennant, we've got someone more akin to the classic Doctors leading the show. And while I've got no issues with the cast of Chibnall's era, I really wish his writing had been anywhere close to competent. One of his biggest failings is in treating the companions like sidekicks the Doctor brought along for company, as opposed to someone the Doctor *needs* to have with them, to keep perspective on the universe. The Ninth Doctor needed Rose. And while the other Doctors don't necessarily need their companions in the same way, they still need that presence. I've never gotten the feeling that Thirteen needs anyone that same way, except for someone to talk to.

@MythicFox
@MythicFox Жыл бұрын
@@purpseatpeeps8641 Certainly. The cast did the best they could, and the companions in particular got utter dogshit material. There's a part of me that wants to argue that he was a competent showrunner in the grand scheme of things, but a competent showrunner would have understood that he shouldn't have kept trying to write the whole show himself. Chris insisted on writing or co-writing almost every episode, and while I'm not exactly a brilliant writer myself, I could go on about what I think he does wrong because most of it's the same stuff I did wrong when I was writing as a teenager. The sorts of stuff I would have come up with in high school and not showed to anyone because I knew it was bad and just didn't want to hear it. I really hope Big Finish gets Jodie to come and record some audio plays, because I'd love to see what she can do without Chibnall's clumsy writing.

@Cybermat47
@Cybermat47 9 ай бұрын
The backstage drama doesn’t sound like it was Eccleston’s fault, though. Sounds like he was troubled by the way the cast and crew were being treated by the higher-ups and was uncomfortable with the culture of the production. The fact that Noel Clarke has since been accused of sexually harassing women on the set of series 1, and the fact that he was given a larger role in series 2 and returned for series 4, would seem to vindicate Eccleston’s concerns.

I never understood the proper context of this scene when I was a kid, but on a rewatch as an adult I understand fully how the Doctor must be feeling here. He did the unthinkable to his own people to rid the universe of an enemy only for that enemy to resurface and be standing before him must have been soulcrushing, and most likely made the Doctor question if what he did was even worth it

Just think: this was a Dalek at its most vulnerable. Utterly crushed by the hopelessness of its situation, cut off from everything that gave it purpose. And then he meets The Doctor. Someone in that very same situation. Someone utterly alone in the universe. And for perhaps the first time in Dalek history, it genuinely seems to empathize with him. Before it became a mutant, before Rose infected it with humanity, its actions were to reach out in a plaintive voice, looking for... what? A purpose? Companionship? Maybe even just the slightest tendril of empathy that he could latch onto. But, in the end... The Doctor had none left to give.

The Daleks are my favourite Doctor Who villains sorry to any Cybermen, The Master, Davros, Weeping Angels and Sontaran fans out there but the Daleks are in my opinion the best and big reason apart from a lot of their stories and how they interact with the Doctor is Nickolas Briggs the Voice of the Daleks he does a fantastic job happy he comes back all the time to do it and can’t wait for the Daleks to be back for Christmas or New Year

Is it weird that I don’t have one particular favourite doctor or monster? I really like the cybermen, the master and the daleks but I can’t personally compare them. I hate thinking “which ones better” bc they’re all incredible in their own way, same with the doctors (although I can narrow them down to my 2 favourite)
