I agree with you about the eyes but the finest scene to show Tennant's acting prowess is "The Family of Blood". The way "John Smith" reacts to his having to die so that The Doctor can live and save everyone is soul wrenching. It's a powerful performance made all the more heartbreaking by the fury of Ten when he disposes of The Family. Tennant's acting is all in his eyes. He can appear terrified, or sad or he can freeze your soul to ice all with a single look.

This was my favorite thing about Martha Jones. She made the Doctor talk about things on HER time table. Made him confront the things he always tried to sweep under the rug, and it helped him.

The Doctor needed Martha, in a number of ways. It's just the fact that things ended up coming down to her falling for him, and him not being over Rose yet, meant she got fed up and left. But her attitude as a _friend_ what exactly what he needed to give him that push to talk about things, and realizing finally how she felt and why she was leaving also gave him that push to really try and move on properly and get over Rose. After Martha, Donna then filled the perfect niche. A good friend who would push him to do the right thing, but was sassy, could verbally spar with him by virtue of sheer attitude, and was not romantically interested.

My god, people have said it before but David in this scene just radiates pure, raw emotion. You can see The Doctor is on the verge of tears remembering his home. Describing things that, when you stop and think about it, he probably took for granted. Growing up on Gallifrey, those things were just normal to him, a second sun rising over the shining mountains, the silver leaves catching the light to look like a forest on fire. As the old saying goes, "You don't know what you have until it's gone." You can see the sadness in his eyes remembering a home he can never go back to, sights that he will never see again. This is why, in my opinion, David Tennant is the best Doctor of New Who, he brought forth The Doctor's pain and anguish better than anyone else. Eccleston never really had a chance to shine, Smith played a man so stricken with grief he chose to forget his pain, Capaldi played a Doctor who refused to lose anything else, breaking his own rules in order to get what he wanted. Whittaker, despite the awful storylines, played a woman who's entire life was a lie, who didn't know who she was. But Tennant? He played a man who once had everything, and now has nothing. His past keeps coming to haunt him, and he can do nothing about it. The more he runs from it, the more it comes right back into his face. Bravo David Tennant, bravo.

Oh it was honestly the biggest character development in doctor who history the weight of carrying out their legacy, no one could ever understand how it is to be so truly alone and the regret of knowing that it was by his hand. Obviously she couldn't know that his planet had been destroyed, but it was obvious at he wasn't comfortable talking about it and I at least think it was a little rude to pressure him into telling her

well she had do deal with the whole "being ignored cause he's so hung up on Rose" which I understand that the Doctor misses her, but Martha's been doing everything trying to get noticed and he's just ignoring that. She was fed up with all the times he would push away the subject or get a short answer that was a lie, and said "you know what, I think it's about time he told me the truth." but the truth just so happened to be a bit too much "Only ask him a question if you know you can stand the answer."

One of the best series and story arcs in Doctor Who history. The way the Doctor got restored to youth in the final episode was disappointingly corny but the buildup and in particular the 'Sound of Drums' episode were astonishing, absolutely must-see TV. Even the creepy 'Vote Saxon' trailers leading up to 'Drums' were a nice touch.

All these years later after first watching this and it still gets me, David’s acting is superb. It might be just nostalgia but this for me was when Dr who was at its peak and I remember my family always waiting each Saturday for this. I remember eps like this was always shrugged off the week before but when they had this scene to end it nothing could be more perfect. Dr who or any tv show will ever captivate an audience in the way that this scene and season 3 ever will. David tennant was at his best this year. Anyway.....whenever I feel a bit unsure about myself I look back at this and it takes me back to a simpler time. Ah to have it all back

If I recall right the tenth doctor hadn't done that yet, none of the doctors had not until 12s tardis had finished the calculations then through time paradox fuckery pulled all the previous doctors into one moment because time is not a linear progression from cause to effect with doctor who so from tens perspective gallifrey has burnt because he hasn't been pulled to that moment after he had fled.

Martha's place in this series was pure genius. People loved Rose and were slower to love Martha because of it. Likewise, The Doctor loved Rose and distanced himself from Martha for the same reason. The written dynamic between The Doctor and Martha mirrored perfectly the dynamic between the audience and Martha. Superb.

Is it weird that I wish we never saw Gallifrey at all? The way how Susan and The Doctor describe it makes it seem like the most beautiful place that could only be seen in one's imagination. A burnt orange sky, trees with silver leaves reflecting the two suns, snow covered mountains, pastures of red grass. Sounds like place in a fairy tale.

Love this scene. A moment that doesn't get talked about enough is Martha mirroring Rose saying "you've got me" and the Doctor crushes her with "I don't think so".

Yeah, he always made her feel bad for trying to be there for him. As said on the commentary with the actors and showrunner, Martha stands her ground though, something that the Doctor admires.

David Tennant was, by far, the best at communicating the fact that he was an old, old soul in a young man's body. His slightly detached look, the memories flooding back, a weariness yet still a spark of life...a great actor.

Hearing The Doctor talk about his home planet really makes you uneasy like hearing a sad ghost story knowing we've SEEN the Time Lords before. Prior to Day Of The Doctor they were dead so hearing this has this aging feeling knowing they've all been dead for a VERY long time.

I loved how Martha went and had enough of the Doctor not telling her anything. Rose wouldn't have done that. How could Martha travel with a man who talks a lot but never actually says anything? She managed to get him to give in and tell her everything. Martha was so great, she didn't deserve the hate she got. I think everybody was still upset over Rose. Still I do hope Martha comes back at some point

I remember this was the second episode that I watched of the tenth doctor. There was something about David Tennant being the doctor that capture me that made me like him as the doctor. Not sure was it the way he deliver his lines or his charismatic that he is that you just want to watch the episode to be with him.

the time war retcon will never not make me mad! this scene is so incredible and deep and the acting is amazing. gallifrey never being destroyed just feels like m*ffat trying to cheapen moments like this, and a part of the doctor that was crucial to this era’s characterization of them.

A major part of Moffat's problems as a showrunner is that - and he explicitly said this - he considered 'Doctor Who' a kid's show that happened to appeal to adults, which is the complete inverse of how RTD wrote and treated the show: RTD treated the show as a show for adults that happened to appeal to kids. I also don't think Moffat really understood how to create emotional depth and gritty drama the same way that RTD did - the Doctor's RTD-era companions were his FRIENDS, as you can clearly see in this scene: the Pond family, including the Doctor's "wife," were more like his CULTISTS. If it helps, I personally consider everything from S5 of the New Who onwards non-canon.
