The first was referring to how if the Doctor used his anger to act like a Dalek, exterminating his enemies instesd of going for the peaceful route, than the Daleks would consider him good at it, good at exterminating and the Dalek way. The other was referring to how the Doctor's hate for the Dalek race is so great that his being is indistinguishable from that of a Dalek. Deapite his hate however he seeks peaceful options, doing the morally good. He is a Dalek that despite being a Dalek acts good, a good Dalek.

You know, I didn't realise until just now that Rusty also says "Dalek's are evil!" which brings so much more depth into this entire scene. Rusty didn't disregard the endless perfection and beauty of the universe he saw and focus on the Doctor's rage, he used that beauty and perfection as fuel and motivation into destroying the other Dalek's as he saw why the Doctor hates them so much. He became more like the Doctor, who destroys the Dalek's to preotect the Universe, while the opposite happens to the Doctor, and his inner Dalek is revealed. I had also imagined a scenario where Rusty would seek to learn more of the beauty of the universe, opposing those who sought to violate it. Eventually, he would seek out the Doctor, hoping to enlist their help for him develop more, essentially making him a Dalek version of the Doctor, helping them to realize that while they are defined by far more than their opposition to the Daleks, Rusty (and to that extent, Daleks in general) define everything they perceive and do through the lens of hatred, the only other emotion that they can perceive outside of their fear towards the Doctor and their sense of superiority to anything that is not a Dalek.

That’s what I always loved about the Doctor. He isn’t some god or hero or “goodman”. Its easy for anyone to save the people they love. The Doctor will always take those extra steps to live up to the name he chose and save even those he hates. At the end of the day he still knows the tragedy of all his foes (the Daleks never had a choice; Davros had been driven mad by the fear of 2000 years of war). There are just times when he needs reminding of that (the series 1 episode Dalek). This episode and the metacrisis Doctor shows how difficult it is for anyone with his experiences to still come out even trying to be a better person.

That's The Doctor. Capable of so much hatred but he tempers it with compassion and mercy. Being The Doctor would be easy if he never hated, never judged, never got angry or wrathful. But he is hatred, and vengeance, and cruelty. But he is also love, and wisdom, and understanding, and kindness, like every person he is a mixture of the best and the worst, and it's the fact that he has those worst aspects of himself, that darkness that we all possess, but still chooses to be The Doctor in spite of those things, that makes him a hero. He reacts to things like a human, being protective and angry and volatile at times, especially after the Time War. He wants to limit himself which is why he never carries a weapon, because of his fear for what he could do, which is why post-Time War he often *needs* a companion, because the New Who iterations of the Doctor made it so the companions are a constant reminder of the beauty of humanity that he wishes to emulate. He doesn't want to be the scary military Time Lord he was forced to be in the universe's darkest hour. Personally, I like what they've done with the Doctor character in the current show. I was once annoyed with some of the pseudo-deepness of Doctor Who but this one aspect I really like: the damaged hero who doesn't want the power because he had made some huge mistakes in the past when he held such power.

I really love the use of practical effects in this scene. It looks so much better than previous episodes where Daleks where exploded using CGI. In fact, behind the Doctor at about 1:52 you can see a scene from the series 4 finale of Daleks exploding in CGI and comparing it to the exploding Daleks at 2:17 the difference really shows. I want more practical effects like this in the future!

I love that the Doctor basically lost. He tried to change a Dalek, make a Dalek good. But he simply can't. Its impossible, Daleks cannot be taught to think differently. Wasn't the whole point of the episode showing that the daleks could change, it was just the armor that made them evil? All positive emotions deleted and replaced with anger, good memories replaced with bad, etc. Instead of the doctor yelling at it and giving it his hatred for it's race, send the dalek to a licensed psychologist and it might get some real help.

No no. I don't think that's why he lost. It's not that Daleks are impossible to change. It's that he, himself, is not good. The Doctor is, at the end of the day, the most vicious, ruthless murderer in existence bar none. And he hates these creatures far deeper and more passionately than they have ever been able to hate him or any other being in existence. _That_ is why he lost. He lost because his own hate far surpasses that of anyone else.

This story certainly isn't perfect, but it has got a lot of great moments, this being one of them. It's so very tragic and upsetting, both for the Daleks and the Doctor. The only form of peace and appreciation the Daleks can ever hope to have is mutual hatred against themselves, and the Doctor will always carry his own hatred with him to stop him being completely becoming the good man he wants to be.

Adi Wadi I wasn't kidding, in the Big Finish audio episode I Davros set on Skaro long before Genesis of the Daleks, there is a line spoken in Kaled which roughly sounds like 'Talu beq'kalir urikstar Dalek' which means "On that day men shall become as gods". The term dalek means God in Kaled. Clearly the writer of this episode doesn't know that but it doesn't stop it from being funny.

One of my favorite episodes of the new series. All the wisdom and kindness that the Doctor has to offer and all Rusty saw was hate. I think the doctor realize he created a monster by his own hatred of the Daleks. I like the fact it shows the Doctor isn't perfect.

I’m curious about Rusty-I feel like the Doctor didn’t entirely fail, because even if Rusty was focused on the hate and rage, he still *saw* the beauty, still remembered when he saw a star being born. Unfortunately, he will never be able to change: he saw the beauty of the universe and he came to love it but he also saw the Daleks destroy that beauty; his heart is now filled with an hatred stronger than any other emotion he could ever feel: he hates the Daleks and, as a consequence, he hate himself too. The day when he would be able to love again would be the day all the Daleks would have been exterminated but that day would also be the day of Rusty's death.

And this, right here, is why the writers made Capaldi one of the best doctors ever. The duality of the character, the sublime beauty witnessed, combined with the absolute hatred of a single species to the point of xenocidal madness. The fear that that madness may take over. That a being dedicated towards hatred and destruction recognizes it as more powerful than the revelation of the infinite perfection of the universe and the wonder of creation. This is why Capaldi is my favorite Doctor.

It's not like the Daleks haven't had their civil wars before. From the Second Doctor disseminating the Human Factor across Skaro, prompting a general rebellion against the Emperor, to Davros asserting his authority and attempting to upgrade his creations while a renegade faction clung to ideals of genetic purity.

The true beauty of this is the fact that it was inevitable. The Doctor was trying to make the Dalek see that there was more to life than hatred, but he himself is as capable of hate as anyone. If a Dalek that worships hate looks into the Doctor, of course it will see the hatred there and find it beautiful, and of course that is what it would latch onto. That isn't all that the Doctor is, but it's all that a Dalek CARES ABOUT. The Doctor could have shown Rusty all manner of beautiful things, and it would not have made a difference, because the Daleks only process things through hatred.

It’s kinda funny how most of the time when the doctor beats the Daleks it’s met with this jovial, triumphant orchestra. He’s won, the Daleks failed once again and the universe is safe. But not here… the music is somber, even a little tragic as a Dalek turns against his own kind. Something that’s only been seen in the members of the cult of Skaro. Daleks that were most likely “corrupted” by their task of thinking like the enemy in order to kill them. Making them less predictable and more empathetic as a result. Here though it seems different. Rusty wasn’t a member of the COS he was essentially a POW or spy that pretended to be a betrayer and by the Doctor’s own hand was turned into a weapon against the Daleks. But not out of malice. The Doctor thought he had a real, genuine chance to make a Dalek see more than just hatred and slaughter. A chance to show a Dalek what he sees. The beauty and divinity of the universe. And while it was working for a while. So very much like a Dalek, a creature that finds beauty and divinity in hatred, it fixated on the Dr’s hatred for Daleks. His PTSD of the time war, his moments of witnessing acts of unjustified brutality and cruelty at the hands of these monsters. It saw every single sin and atrocity that the Daleks were responsible for and it weaponised that hatred and brainwashed itself into murdering its own. Because that’s all Daleks know and do. They kill and destroy and know only hatred and malice.

Rusty is actually a pretty cool concept to think about. The other Daleks find it impossible for any Dalek to go rogue and they all have a morality data bank or whatever that prevents them from killing one of their own. Rusty would only be sent to the Dalek Asylum, but capturing a rogue and hostile Dalek would be quite difficult I would imagine. A supreme Dalek might be the only Dalek that is allowed to execute one of their own, even if it is against their morals.

I saw a comment explaining how rusty could explode the daleks in one shot and it was because of how their hatred fuels their guns, they reload by shouting “exterminate” and since rusty was linked to the Doctor it fed off of his extreme hatred, supercharging their gun

The doctor has had a long history of hate to the daleks, no matter how much compassion he has shown that anger deep down in his very soul always rises up when the doctor is angry. It so powerful that other enemy have learn to fear him.
