Andy from ProGuitarShop.com demos the brand new DOD Gunslinger MOSFET Distortion, an incredibly versatile pedal that blends tube-like drive and harmonic complexity with a touch-sensitive nature and uncommonly flexible gain and tone capabilities. This dynamic diversity is thanks in large part to a wide-ranging gain circuit that can accomodate any need for rich, defined saturation, plentiful output, and industry standard 9 or 18 volt operation, which offers plenty of headroom for any guitar or bass application. The Gunslinger possesses powerful tone-sculpting powers, accessible via two simple tone controls; the Low knob, which can boost or cut bass frequencies, and the High knob, which similarly boosts or cuts high end. These controls are great for enhancing thickness and clarity, or bringing out sweet, singing midrange when both tone knobs are rolled back. Other notable features of the new DOD Gunslinger MOSFET Distortion include a crisp, blue LED status indicator, a classic looking brushed metal housing, and rugged true bypass switching that keeps your original tone unaffected.

FYI, 18 volts has been known to kill these pedals. Designer Tom Cram has since stated that 12 volts is a better maximum to ensure no damage is done.

Massive Assault - Metal Band man that’s sad to hear. DOD was putting some *almost* great pedals out. The gain sounds in this pedal are great. They also had the rubberneck delay which sounds incredible, EXCEPT that on the delays there is a noticeable white noise that worsens with the tone and gain up. It seems like the team were really on to a few things so it’s sad to hear that they got shut down. They have a few pedals like the gunslinger and rubberneck that we’re almost great.

It's nice to see DOD jumping on the bandwagon and lifting circuits from other makers. At least this one is probably a great deal more affordable than the Mad Professor Stone Grey distortion that it seems to be directly, um, sounding a lot like. Or is it just the ROG Ubescreamer in a pro-assembled box? Whatever, it sounds a-okay, just ranting about the vagaries of fx pedal marketing in the 21st century...

My Gunslinger was acting up - randomly shutting down or not even powering up, I opened it up to have a look, and to my surprise, not a single MOSFET appears to be in the circuit. Three opamps (bipolar) two diodes and a 2n3904 bipolar transistor. No MOSFETS.

I have owned one for about two years now. It is the best-sounding distortion pedal I have ever heard, I love it to bits with how tubelike it is, but it isn't without problems, and why sadly, it isn't on my board anymore. I will probably never sell it, but I can't use it live as well as other pedals. Here are four problems I've noticed, one which can destroy the pedal. 1.) When I opened it up, I didn't see a single clipping diode. Perhaps I missed one because of how tiny the surface-mount parts are, but the way I think the pedal makes its distortion by is boosting a bunch of FETs in a row, like a fuzz, to get tubelike gain. These work by boosting the internal gain to ridiculous amounts, the FETs clip, voila! Distortion. What this also does is make microphonics like a motherfucker, and this is the biggest problem with this pedal. I can't blend it with my amp distortion like my trusty DS-1 (I stand by the statement that if you dislike a DS-1, you haven't used it correctly) because the very second I stop playing, it squeals, feeds back and the sound guy wants to punch me. Same for gain stacking with my ODR-Mini, which sounds fantastic if not for those insane squeals. It gets to the point I can't use it live that well, only recording... but for recording, I prefer to use my amp, increasing preamp and power amp gain, and using a mild overdrive, booster or EQ pedal to boost it further for solos/chunky chorus parts. The very thing it is most useful for I don't use it that much for. 2.) 18V power? Modern ones say keep it to 12V. I have powered mine on 18V since I got it, but apparently, other people have plugged their Gunslinger into their 18V jack and promptly fried the circuit. Proceed with caution and keep it to 12V. Perhaps I got an earlier model that can take 18V, you may not be as lucky. 3.) Because it shares more in common with a fuzz than a regular clipped distortion pedal, lowering the gain lowers the volume and also lowers the overall "fatness" of the tone. Keeping the gain low makes your signal super thin, so it's impossible to use it as a dirty boost pedal, like many people use a TS-9 or an ODR-1, unless you want your Les Paul to sound like a Strat. Conversely, cranking the gain to get a QOTSA fuzzstortion increases the bass a ton, so much so that one has to adjust the lows to compensate. 4.) It is a DOD pedal, so the footswitch blows. I had to replace the footswitch with a quality unit from Mammoth about six months after getting it. I am handy with a soldering iron, but to a kid who doesn't know about electronics, it would be a fatal breakage. That said, it is still the best-sounding distortion pedal I have ever heard, and I still recommend it to anybody who has a one-channel amp and wants real tubelike distortion. There are so many good sounds in there, like a good QOTSA fuzzstortion when the gain is cranked and the bass and treble knobs are turned down to boost the mids. The Gunslinger is a fantastic pedal with some big flaws.
@JeanMarceaux
@JeanMarceaux Жыл бұрын
Honestly speaking, using DOD's own Carcosa fuzz may be better for fuzztortion, because that circuit is containing legit black magick. I've never heard a fuzz circuit do a convincing mildly dirty boost and velcro fuzz
