In California you can register a new 49 state car as long as it has been previously registered in another state and has at least 7500 mi on the odometer. I've done it many times. He should have had it registered in Texas and driven 7500MI then re-register in California. It's expensive to register the car twice in the same year but that's the legal way.

My understanding is in TX, dealers can only register a car to an owner with a TX address (and they gotta pick up plates and tags from the dealer when they come in). When I moved to TX from CA, Porsche Plano wouldn’t take my custom Macan order unless I provided a TX address for registration purpose, which I did.

Rent apartment in Oregon and register the car there (or any other state that doesn't have sales tax) at the 'new' address. Drive from Oregon to New York, back to Denver, back to New York, and then home to California. Should be close to 7500 miles at that point. Then register car in California and end the lease in Oregon. This might be cheaper than the lawyers.

Why would anyone expect a Texas dealer to process the necessary legal paperwork needed in California to certify this Dodge? I've purchased out of state -- but made sure it was 50 state certified. As someone who has a large fleet of vehicles in both California and Nevada, the simplest solution would be for him to get a mailbox in Nevada, register the vehicle there, then move it to California when the registration comes due (in a year). Nevada does not verify addresses or ask questions as long as you pay the fees. Very simple, easy solution. However, he will need to get a Nevada insurance policy. Also the only difference between a California and 49 state vehicle is amount of precious metal in the catalytic converters. The California vehicles have slightly more because they're required to have an 8 year/80,000 mile emission warranty. Meanwhile the actual tailpipe emissions are identical. Just another California scam in my opinion and the cost of replacement CA catalytic converters are 3 to 4 times as much. My 49 State Wrangler only requires a $150 49-state catalytic converter, whereas the almost identical California one is $1186. California b******* politics in my opinion

sucks that hes going through this but its like he bought this car sight unseen; completely oblivious or something. just doesnt make sense. no due diligence, and before dropping all this cash he didnt even do a walk around? i know if i was gonna buy my "dream car" i would look that mf up, down, and sideways, cause after all...buy once/cry once. 😂

If it’s just a sticker… can’t the dealership pay the upgraded fee for a 50 state sticker? It’s just another tax.

I agree they should buy the vehicle back, but they’re not responsible for his modifications

Dang the dealership won't take a hit of 15k with the wrap and all the other shit if it hasn't modified it they would of taken back probably

I don't know what's worse. The dealer cooking him or paying 74k for a Scat Pack. Man

Thanks for all that information

One component to this situation that was not declared is the cost of certification. It seems to be a "sticker" and nothing else needs done mechanically to the car?

Great channel along with TK and OC. I watch you guys on a daily basis and, for the life of me, I just don't understand why you would spend a dollar for a Dodge product when there are so many alternatives which represent way better value. It is like Dodge consumers have a desire to be used and abused. Fascinating.

If the info was on the window sticker/listing info ,the buyer has no case. A guy who buy’s a car out of state and doesn’t even left the hood is a sucker sale waiting to happen. I think the good old boys at this Texas dealership are having some good laughs ,about this sale, at the expense of a west coast dude. He’s sort of a victim of the blue/red state Cold War. 🏎🏎🏎

The answer is to simply get it registered. They won't look at a sticker, they will just register it and take his money happily. Geez Louise.

Good reason why a lot of dealers wont sell to Cali customers.

So if car is new and dealer can pay to have 50state cert Can a person take a new stock vehicle to have 50 state inspected or cert if they pay what ever cost is? I’m Canadian no idea just asking

I was wondering the same thing. I am from Texas. If he were able to, he could get it done and then sue the dealership to recoup any costs as well as cover any anguish he received due to the faulty deal. Not a guaranteed route but possibly the only choice he might have. *edit due to autocorrect mistake lol*

This video could have been 7 minutes long but the content provider just rambles on and on. I gave up at 7:15.

Why would I purposely make my video short when KZbin penalizes you for not having enough watch time on a video! You just hurting yourself when you post short videos and we won’t get into the monetary drawbacks! Clearly not understanding how this KZbin thing works

My question is why are they not 50 state certified if there's nothing special needed to be a CA car?

"I'm going to live in California", said no Texan, ever. THERE IS NOTHING "ILLEGAL" ABOUT HAVING AN LLC IN ANOTHER STATE.

Dealer here. There are ways to get them to buy it back.

Sucks for the car buyer. I have done some spark ignition emissions testing work, this brings up a pet peeve of mine. EPA should not let California set their own emissions regulations. The actual emissions ppm qty allowed EPA vs. CA is basically the same. EPA formula is easy to understand, CA's is convoluted but ends up in mostly the same ppm. The hardware can pass both tests. The tests are different because reasons. CA just adds extra paperwork for basically the same emissions. It's ridiculous that CA gets to do the same overall emissions in a different formula just to be complicated. This is exactly what is wrong with government.
