*UPDATE:* The customer stopped back a few days later and we installed the OEM antenna on the roof so it would solve the issues with the wet headliner. He bought the car in the condition it was in, back up camera and baby shark fin were all ready on there. He did not want to do any further testing with the internal key detection antenna's at this time

@@190055joe the video feed runs all the way to the front. The power is tapped of that module in the back. He cut the power wire and the video feed is now dead because of it. So it doesn't really matter if it rubs through, because there is no voltage on it anyway

When aftermarket garbage gets installed correctly, we never get to see it! ;D Back in my early 20s, I lived out in the country for a bit. Lack of street lights at night convinced me to pick up the most AWESOME LIGHT KIT EVER from Walmart... This was long before I was even remotely interested in cars and mechanics and whatnot. Got 'em installed (without reading the directions, of course!), turned 'em on real quick, they worked, waited for nightfall to take a quick drive, and in less than a minute, my car was on fire. A wasted gatorade and a night of googling later, I figured out why. Poorly installed aftermarket garbage jumpstarted my career. :D

I agree with your method of tapping and giggling wires. It works. Short story... I am an aircraft mechanic. A helicopter was getting an error message from the autopilot. Gyro invalid. I finally found the problem by bumping the circuit breaker panel and noticed the gyro needle jump. A terminal was loose. I was later counseled for improper troubleshooting. I told that person to pound sand. Why didn’t they like me?

I don't think viewers should go crazy on the comments because of Eric disconnecting/deleting/defeating aftermarket stuff. I mean, Eric's job is to fix the car's issue, and if that is caused by some external device causing havoc and fixed by removing said contraption, then so be it. We should all realiz that Eric ain't no car stereo installer, he's a car tech and he's gonna resolve the drivability issue he's been hired to fix. If the owner wants his/her aftermarket stuff back on, then an expert qualified installer should be the one to be hired for the job.

What I would have done to fix it, since the problem is a break down of insulation is reinsulate it. With a piece of rubber hose (vacuum line) slit up the side and installed over the wire, tied with small zip ties and maybe file down the sharp edge. This would love all the after market accessories in place and undisturbed.

Chrysler dealer tech here, that shark fin antenna is not factory. Also, whoever did that hack job wiring is an idiot, wiring should never be run across the face of an airbag. That could interfere with the proper op of the curtain airbag right there. That's a federal offense, as it could be considered tampering with federally mandated safety equipment. One common problem i'm seeing with the factory antenna is the threaded portion of the mast gets broken off in the base of the antenna. Sometimes, the broken part can be unscrewed out, otherwise, the base has to be replaced. That rf hub has to be moved out of the way to replace the base. Seeing your update comment, glad that you were able to figure it out and fix it. Also, if the fobik is not transmitting, putting the fobik on the pushbutton and starting the car with it can help to diag. Edit: The interior antenna for the fobiks is under the center console, that's why the fobiks have to be in that area of the cupholder for the interior antenna to pick up the fobiks. I agree with you, Eric about aftermarket accessories installation, and about never tapping into a module power feed.

Yea the only place you should really run power from is the battery or the power distribution center. Make sure you use an inline fuse (in this case they didnt do that either which would of saved the customer from a no-start). Then if necessary use a relay and connect that to either the ignition, or reverse light, to power say aftermarket powered windows or a backup camera, respectively.

Sir, I was looking for someone like yourself in my area and got lucky because it is hard to find someone with your integrity in the auto mechanic field. I just wanted to say that ALL your videos, regardless how simple/logical the issues are do not erase them. When I was a kid one of the magazine subscriptions my mother bought for us boys was Popular Mechanics. One of the regular monthly features was a mystery car ailment that was stumping all previous mechanics until old Smokey had a look-see. He spent the time to thoroughly diagnose and trace down the source of the problem. I loved reading those articles, and later when I started working on cars I remembered a lot of the crazy stories - and then I became the guy figuring out what others gave up on. Cars are a whole lot more complex now, but I appreciate your methodical way of not only tracing problems. - but looking at the whole car and related systems.

Thanks for the new video. I look forward to watching your usual Sunday installment. I thought that we were out of luck with having several come out this week. It still amazes me about the hack job aftermarket installations. A couple of years ago I replaced the stock AM/FM radio in my Chhheeevvroleeet 2500 with the fuel efficient 6.0. I had to wire the new radio’s harness to the module which has the door dinger... Care was taken to solder and heat shrink all connections. It didn’t take too much time to do things right. I guess that time is money for the car electronics shops. They must do whatever to get them out the door and get the next one in.

Hi Eric, It's all very well putting after market stuff on your car, but get it done professionally unless you really know what your doing. Your video just goes to show how a botched install can screw up the car's systems so easily... Great videos Eric thanks for making them... All the best from Peter in the UK.

Eric, your distrust for aftermarket equipment and installation is well justified. I've seen too many cars where an aftermarket stereo amp was installed with no fuse or circuit breaker. The system required a 100 amp circuit but only installed using 10 gauge wire. Should have been 4 gauge or better. The wire was run through the rocker panel, with like the Journey, no anti-chafe on the wires. Good way to burn a car to the ground. Out of the referral work you get, any idea how many new customers you pick up as full time clients?

Working 20 plus years as an RV tech I have sat in wonder as to why the rig I am working on hasn't burned to the ground. When I tell the customer what I have found they are usually not amused by being the recipient of a previous hack job.

why am i thinking Eric's not the"best liked" repair shop by other shops? Oh sure, he'll fix'em. but then it's all over U tube and the customers recognize their vehicles and prob harass the original shops! Good job Eric

Sure there are people where SMA/Eric was not the first garage that tried to fix the problem, but I hear Eric often say "brought here by another garage". Some garages are part swappers and wenn that doesn't help, they send the car to the next garage in this case SMA/Eric.
@DaddyBeanDaddyBean
@DaddyBeanDaddyBean 4 жыл бұрын
Eric never shames the other garage by name (he's nice that way), and the customer knows what went down whether there's a video posted or not, so personally I don't see how "another garage" would have any reason to complain.

I put 154K on a Journey. When I traded it, it ran like a Swiss watch. And the ONLY problem I had with it was warping rotors. Tried Napper rotors and calipers - no joy. The only ones that lasted any significant time were the OEM parts. Otherwise, that Journey was a dang fine car and I was kinda sad to see it go. Of course, I didn’t stuff any after-market crap in it either. That 3.6L engine was no slouch either. It would haul the mail if you asked it to. One of the very few Chrysler products I enjoyed having. Thanks Eric. Outstanding video!
