Dodge Nitro: EGR Valve Problems

In this video I have a loot at a Dodge Nitro 4.0 that came in from another shop and they told the customer that the vehicle had a broken wire in the harness that runs the EGR. Although it did have a high voltage code stored in it I show how a few simple checks quickly proves out the wire and determines that it is just a bad EGR valve. -Enjoy!

I can’t believe I actually watched the commercials. The first one was so long I forgot what that I was watching a South Mian Auto video. Why did I watch the commercials you ask? I did it for the kids. I figure Eric has a family to support and they may want a college education someday. The money from you tube can’t be that much. Eric diligently presents invaluable information that is real world. I remember the first time I heard. “If I can do it....you can do it.” He is right.

So many "techs" nowadays have not got a clue how to test products, your test methods and understanding of electrical components Eric is phenomenal, excellent testing , shows up the other garage , probably another new customer for life , no wonder you have new staff with all the work you are gaining from other inexperienced garages , well done , great bonus footage , showing the new EGR working unlike other so called "scanning" u tubers who "diagnose the fault , sometimes wrongly then run and let others fix it " you are a professional at what you do , brilliant!!!!😘🤗😎

@ mike. Your comment brings up this question. If a another shop sends something to Eric and Eric fixes it, I assume the car gets sent back to the shop that sent it to him and that shop is billed for the repair, not the car owner. So would that car owner ever know that Eric fixed it? Or would that shop just bill it as parts and labor and the car owner never knows the car was sent out to Eric? Just wondering how this works.
@mikeberry304
@mikeberry304 4 жыл бұрын
@@ken9503 all depends who takes the car to Eric , the customer could argue with original garage about mis diagnosis luckily on this occasion no parts had been replaced , problems would arrive if somebody diagnosed a fault, replaced an expensive part and fault is still there , the motor trade is very difficult to work in now unless you are knowledgeable and upto date with modern vehicles and how manufacturers work

@@vernon207 if only , the expensive diagnostic machines we have to use now can be very helpful in giving the information we need to assess the fault , and then with the customers permission correctly replace the required parts , so many inexperienced "mechanics", just guess at what's wrong , buy and fit parts and fingers crossed it fixes the fault , this trade is costly to be in , not many trades spend as much money on tools and equipment as we have to week in , week out year after year , , diagnostic updates at approx £600 / £1000 per machine each year many other trades , once you have your essential tools away you go , not in the motor trade

I'm glad you brought up function testing through a scan tool. Some scanners only do a very low pulse width, which will not light a test light, nor 194 bulb. If your scanner has the capability, turn the duty cycle to 80-100% to check control and circuit integrity.

It’s amazing that a easy definitive diagnosis that proves a bad part frustrates Eric. Then again he probably respects the idea for a better story for us. And trust me sometimes Eric goes over my head where I may throw parts at something but it’s my penny and my labor. At that point I would reference back to a video close in subject. Obviously a business cannot be run that way or hundreds of dollars could be lost a day
@DaddyBeanDaddyBean

My diagnostic tools are a $20 FleaBay code reader, multimeter, test light, and an internet connection. No scan tools, lab scopes, etc. For the home mechanic, sometimes it's worth the gamble to just replace the part you're pretty sure is bad, vs paying for a diagnosis to confirm it. An hour diag time at my local version of SMA is $85. If the part is cheap - considerably less than $85 - I'll just replace it and see. If the part gets much above about $50, unless I'm 100% certain I know the problem (like I found the old part is split in half or full of crusties), I'll pay for the proper diag.

Makes me really happy to see that you're steadily making your way up to a half million subscribers. When I first started watching, you were at about 180k and I couldn't understand why that number wasnt higher. I think a lot of it may be because people see that the video is 20-30 minutes long and they aren't willing to commit that much time. And I'm not saying you should be making shorter videos either, a 30 minute SMA video goes by in the blink of an eye because of how entertaining and informative they are. Just saying it makes sense that your viewer base grows more slowly than certain other hack mechanics who put out 5 minute videos that are pretty much worthless. But I think once somebody watches a whole video they cant help but get hooked on the channel. Funny story, theres another shop called South Main Auto in the town where I went to college. They're absolutely terrible and they screwed me over more than once, so for the longest time I never even bothered watching an SMA video on the off chance that it was the same shop

I'm wondering if they unplugged it thinking that the voltage would change on the scan tool and it didn't so they thought a wiring issue. Or maybe they tested the control side and found the same result you had using the bosch and thought maybe the control circuit was bad. Either way it made for a great video to show how simple a set up like this is to diagnose for beginners.
