Good video man! i have a quetion i have a 02 4.7 rwd starting to go out. Does it matter if i change it to a 4x4 steering if its the same years? Mine is different its not the one that you can just put bushing or o rings. Help 😅

Hi thanks for watching/subscribing. I think the steering shaft during those years are the same on 4 or 2w drive. But the 2500 and 3500 are different shafts and will not work on the 1500.

Did this help with loose / wandering steering? I am always adjusting the steering while driving my leveled 08 2500. I just feel like it is excessive input required to keep it straight. I am going to try to see if I have play tomorrow like in your video. I have replaced the whole front end, ball joints, tie rods, Sway bar linkage, new gear box, dual stablizers, and even added a gear box stabilizer. I don't have vibrations or steering noise. Did you need to drill a hole in your gearbox for the set screw as another video suggested? Thanks for making this video

Hi, thank you for watching. Loose / Wandering steering is a very common issue on these trucks. I did not have the wandering issue but noise, roughness and only little bit of looseness. Replacing the shaft did fix these issues. It is hard to notice any play or binding issues while shaft is in the truck. With the shaft removed it was notably clear which U-joint was causing the issue. I did not drill any holes in the shaft but using the grinder created a small flat spot for the set screw. I have installed this same shaft without holes or grinding flat spot and never had any issues. In most cases loose wheel/wandering is solved by replacing the gear box on these trucks. You have a new gear box so it should already be adjusted properly. But it can be further adjusted to take the play(looseness) out of the steering wheel. Assuming that is where the play is. Keep in mind tires can also cause the wandering issues.

I've seen people make note of grinding the steering box shaft for a flat spot for the bolt to seat against. Did you just tighten right on the splines?

Yes it does make sense to grind a flat spot for the set screw if you can. I didn't feel it was necessary & tightened it on the splines using locktite. No issues.

Hi, thanks for watching/subscribing. Ram 2500 & 3500 will be the same. Technically yes you can remove/replace the joints on these shafts but it's not very practical. Original Joints are staked in, so once you find the correct replacement u- joint(somebody has to be making them) you would need the equipment/machinery to restake them back in at correct position. It's easier just to replace the shaft with new joints already installed. I've had similar staked in driveshaft joints from a BMW that I was able to cut out and replace instead of replacing the complete driveshaft. Thanks...

Get rid of that shaft as soon as possible!! I bought a 2007 dodge 3500 with this reolacement shaft in it, as soon as there is a little play in the set screw the shaft will pop out the first bump you hit, just happened to me, shaft popped off at the steering box side at 100km/h, crashed the truck, luckily there wasnt too much damage and mys3lf or noone got hurt, there is a reason oem has bolts go all the way through, these new style shafts are so dangerous, id hate to see someone else go through what i did

Hi, thank you for watching/subscribing. Glad to hear no-one was hurt. I do agree this shaft is a bit of a dangerous design. Although over a year now and I have not had any issues. I do periodically check the shaft. After about a month of initially installing this shaft I did remove the splined end on the gear box side, ground the splined shaft flat where the set screw seats and used thread locker on the set screw. I just never liked or felt satisfied on how it fits the splines on the steering box and the set screw design(Other end on the steering column side is fine). OEM style with through bolt is a much better and safter design. I will also be switching back to the OEM style shaft just for a piece of mind. Thank you

Unfortunately Dodge doesn't make the intermediate shaft anymore, you are now forced to buy both pieces because the updated one doesn't fit on to the upper shaft. For a mere $750 CDN $ or get an aftermarket one like you did I guess.

HI thank you for watching. Dodge (Ram) may no longer offer the intermediate shaft but it can still be purchased aftermarket for around $110. But once the original shaft was removed from the truck it was clear that the issue was with the joint near the gear box(intermediate shaft).

Don’t buy it, just wait, it’s a ford it’s not worth the money to begin with, when the market corrects you will loose all that money….
