After Replacing Just about everything in the front suspension on my 2011 Ram 3500 mega cab with only 55K miles I decided to research your video. I replaced ball joint, tie rods, sway bars, shocks, struts, etc... and I still had loose steering issues. I basically showed the dealership your video and after a short test drive with the head mechanic they approved the replacement of the shaft. Well! You just saved my $90,000. and I was able to avoid buying a new truck! My truck now drives just like new, no more steering wander or loose steering. I went ahead and bought my service advisor and the mechanic both Starbucks cards. Thank you a million! Or shall I say, thank you 90,000 times!

My problem in my '96 Dodge is the frame joint of the track bar is wallowed out, so I can move the whole cab about 1-2" by turning the steering wheel with it stationary. Definitely need to swap that out before taking it on the highway. Good to know about this steering joint, though!

I've troubleshot a few of these. I don't get how a dealer tech isn't setting the front wheels on the ground and shimmying the steering wheel with someone else looking at the input and output on the steering box. It's not significantly different than troubleshooting an old rag joint.

I thought it was called a death wobble but after hearing your explaining the wandering bit. That's exactly what's going on here. It makes me look like a drunk driver while I go down the road. Have noticed also when I add a small pothole for shallow or a dip while I'm changing lanes at 65 70 miles an hour the truck wants to sway left and right the back end and the steering gets touchy. It'll make you pucker up real quick. I appreciate the video you posted it's help me start somewhere. Short of replacing this and replacing that right now cash is tight with all this virus stuff. Take an old (or new) air hose and cut out a 12" section. With a little WD, slide/spin the air hose over the pin between the inner and outer metal components. Then take a flat edge razor and cut off the hose proud of the outer OD of the shaft. Do both sides and then clamp the shaft with a worm gear hose clamp so the hose pieces can't back out.

@EMFEVO4 жыл бұрын
Mike I assume? In the world of parts replacement technicians a lot has been lost when it comes to steering. These bushing inserts are a quick fix and a diagnostic tool at the same time. When everything has been replaced and the truck is still all over the road, these eliminate the intermediate shaft as an issue and the last place to look is the box lash. In the past year we have not seen an oem replacement box nor a re man that has had the proper lash set. Most are too loose and a few were too tight. Its easy to adjust but to get it exactly right is hard. Before a box is ever installed the lash needs to be checked and then probably set. And don't do it in the vehicle. Especially not with a steering box brace attached. In your case if the sector shaft is moving the adjustment is up and loose. By moving the shaft down it will tighten the lash and remove that play. I have diesel shops that call saying they've put three boxes in so it can't be the box. I'll go there pull the box adjust it and it will steer beautiful. They blame the box. I blame todays part replacement mentality. I'll do a video. It's important if you try this A) you know what you're doing and B) even if you know what you're doing make sure you see the shaft move in and out as you adjust the adjustment stud. Sometimes the shaft won't move. Then you think "I adjusted it but it did nothing" you'll have to free it up.

Did I miss the FIX for this problem? I do indeed have this very problem, but I have no clue how to obtain either metal bushings to hammer in over the pin, or the bushing itself. If the bushing slides down on both ends of the shaft,, that would be MUCH better to simply replace the bushing than the whole shaft, wouldn't ya think? @@EMFEVO How do I fix this
@Ronin-sh7pg4 жыл бұрын
is there any after market parts to fix this. I have a 2000 ram and have basically rebuilt my front end with sloppy steering still an issue. I can not find the upper end with the replacement part you just mentioned. Any direction would be greatly appreciated. Thx

I think on an 2000 it's a rag joint on the engine side of the fire wall and yes I believe you can get a replacement part.

I have a 2013 ram 1500 4x4. steering wheel was completely straight about a month ago now it's slightly going to the left as I go straight down the road the truck doesn't want to dance while going straight down the road. will this fix a 1500.? And will bad wheel bearings cause the steering wheel to go to the left. I was thinking maybe I needed a front end alignment. I have 35-in tires on the truck with a 6-in lift. Please if you read this could you give me some advice??
@EMFEVO4 жыл бұрын
It's ifs so a number of things could be effecting it. Start with an alignment. Wheel bearings could cause but you can check if they're worn by jacking the vehicle up and moving the tire in and out. Watch for movement in the bearing or ball joints. Check for movemen in the tire rod ends. All of those can cause that. Also when was the last time you rotated your tires? Dale drives a 1500 on 35'swe put the collars in his and he said the steering got way more responsive. Less dead zone in the middle.

@@EMFEVO what is the best alignment for 35" tires on 20" rims most places say they can't do it?

So if you turn your wheel and it sum what responds and then all of a sudden over responds. Would you say king pins and baring first Jen w2500 ?
@EMFEVO4 жыл бұрын
Hard to say. On an older king pin 60 truck they would have a rag joint at the box. These get old and soft as well. It could cause that or to much lash in the box. If you want to know if it's a bad pivot in the knuckle turn the wheel while stopped. Let go of the wheel and slowly move forward. If the truck turns in a circle there's an issue. If it comes back to center it's more than likely not at the knuckle.

Now what should I look into next once i added your guys spacers to that and they did help i now have about that much play all the way to my stearing box. If I tighten the box it will just lock in the wheels and i still have play. Should I start looking into replacing the stearing box now.
@EMFEVO5 жыл бұрын
What do you mean if you tightwn the steering box it will lock the wheels?
@GoreMasterAudio5 жыл бұрын
the adjusment on the top of the stearing box will not get rid of the play. it just tightens down and makes it hard to turn. i should of worded that better
@EMFEVO5 жыл бұрын
If it's over tightened it'll do that. The last few I've had to work them up and down until they freed up. Then I could properly adjust it. It should just be minimal movement to change the last. It's the matter of less than a 1/16th to an 8th of a turn making it to tight or too loose. Also box braces prevent the ability to adjust the lash.

Have a 2010 1500. My shaft seems to move together correctly, however with my truck shut off, I can move my steering wheel quite a bit around. Suggestions?

We've put collars in the 1500 and it tightens everything up.

There is a lot of play in the steering wheel but all feels tight everywhere else.

I dont think this is my issue? Have a 2016 2500 with the Cummins. As I am holding the wheel in a sweeping curve (left or right) the wheel (not the whole truck) will "twitch" or "drop out" very briefly causing me to kinda turn the wheel a degree or two then it comes back and is normal again for a another few seconds before repeating. Has anyone else experienced this or know what it might be?
@EMFEVO4 жыл бұрын
That sounds like lash. If it's only in a long sweeping corner. The gear box ( steering box) will always have a bit of lash while in a turn due to the gear on the shaft being made like a parabola arc rather than a proper circle. You would notice it less with intermediate shaft collars or a brand new intermediate shaft and a brand new drag link and a new Trac bar. But there will always be a bit of lash. Every worn component will add or accentuate the feeling of the lash. Hope this helps.

@@EMFEVO I appreciate the reply. Once I have the time and enough pennies collected I'll give that a try.
