I have been a Mopar mechanic for 40 years. They all shake and miss a little. I usually convert mine to Mopar factory electronic ignition, but I am a huge chevy HEI fan, and recommend that too. The only way I found to get them smooth is to add an MSD box and put in a 4bbl that you can change jets/metering rods, then lean it out. I run all AFB carbs, but love the spread bore and next big block gets an AVS.

My 97 Dodge with the 360 would foul the plugs at 300 miles. A few plugs would foul so bad the the whole electrode would be covered with sooty oil. Turned out to be guides. Ran like a champ after guide replacement. It was a lower mileage truck, but just age took them out. Love your videos!!

Yes sir trying new seals first may get the engine to run a little smoother and help the oil issue but that exhaust blowby indicates a possible exhaust (could be intake) valve not seating due to a worn guide. As you mentioned the shaking needle on the vacuum gauge indicates a worn valve guide and I believe a sticking valve gives that same reading (although I do not believe that is the case here). I have put air on the affected cylinder(s) with the rocker arms removed (of course both valves being closed) and listened for air out the tailpipe or air coming back up into the intake indicating a valve not seating due to valve guide being worn excessively. I had about the same problem on my Chevrolet truck (350 engine) that had a skip when idling but ran smooth upon acceleration and of course tried a fresh firing plug with no change but upon applying air on the affected cylinder could hear the air coming out the exhaust (sure enough an excessively worn exhaust valve guide causing the valve to rock on the seat and causing the engine to skip on idle. Similar to a broken valve spring where as the engine speeds up the valve will actually seal but at idle has a pronounced skip. Of course I believe the affected cylinder had a lower compression reading as well.

You may be on the right track with the valve seals, but I have had engines that have done the exact same thing and it was because of the lifters being gunked up with sludge and they were causing the valves to leak. So try putting a half a can of Seafoam in the crank case oil and running the engine for about an hour to get it warmed up real good and see if it gives you a good result.

Valve seals are never a waste of time and money especially if they are riding with the valve, also I believe the shake might be from balancer and the black plugs are from the seals

Years ago, I bought an engine (BB Chev), that did the disappearing oil trick, and it turned out to be bad seals. Some had deteriorated to the point that the pieces were in the oil. I am happy for you, that you have solved at least part of the problem.

Chad, Merry Christmas to and your family. Yep, I'm so old that I have nothing better to do on Christmas Eve, but to watch the youtube of you suffering with the ignition problem on the Dodge. My only question at this point, is did you check the resistance of the plug wires and the coil wire. I wouldn't suspect the coil wire to be the source of the problem, but a high resistance in the carbon plug wires, even new wires, can be the stuff of nightmares. It is too bad that you don't have an ignition scope, so you can actually see the electrical pattern of every cylinder firing. If I lived closer, I would throw mine in the truck and drive down to satisfy my curiosity. Anyway, good luck to you on this one.

👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Great Video! The valve springs on the M116 & M 117 Mercedes V8 Engines deform and wind up having different compression tensions from sitting for a long time (years to decades), besides of the stem seal issues. The springs of the valves which wound up in the fully open position when the motor was last shut down before storing the vehicle are mostly affected and can lose up to 65% of their compression tension. I usually take out all rocker arms when storing a vehicle for longer then three month. This closes all valves and returns springs to minimal compression. In Germany we call this phenomenon a soft misfire which results from the head related issues vs a hard miss in ignition system. Have a Merry Christmas 🎄🎁 Your buddy Peter from Kansas

I’d pull the PCV valve out of the valve cover and spray some carb or brake clean in the crankcase with it running! If the rpms changes or smooths out ya know ya got an intake gasket or valve guide leak! That miss sure sounds like a valve miss! Maybe a Sunk valve or weak springs like I mentioned! Could have some weak valve springs also! Especially if you suspect valve guide wear!

Pausing at 7 minutes to say that when I was a young man of 16 working at the families RV. center , we had for sale in the consignment lot an early 70's late 60's model motorhome with an industrial 317 motor. From what I gather they had used a number of less popular cu inch motors in their "industrial" fleet of engines, but I'm pretty sure the 317 is a Pontiac motor not a Chrysler.

There are times where nothing seems to work with these old engines but once I vent a little frustration with my right foot, I’ve found more often than not it blows some crap out of the combustion chamber and ends up running near perfect. I did it to a 54 ford 239 y block (6000+ rpm) that was running rough and missing, after my “firm words” I could balance a coin on the engine. No problems since.

Tnt garage i feel your frustration 10 years ago when i put my old 72 ford together the engine was junk but it was hodge podged together the was said to be a 351 it was a in actuality a 302 it had mix matched exhaust manifolds and one factory cylinder head And one cylinder head off some mid 80s engine i scrapped the engine because it had what sounded like four rods knocking also the intake on that engine was an edelbrock performer 289 so engine may have been a 289

That's due valves not opening.& Closing all the way.,or the valve seals are bad one. I'd try spraying some PB-blaster.,or WD-40 on the valves to soak good then take A rubber mallet.,an tap each valve down to see if any are sticking at all. And going down.& Coming back up properly to by tapping the rocker arms on top of the valves.

Not sure if that engine has a plenum tray under the intake but if it does check it out good. Had a 360 dodge that was eating oil like crazy. Wound up being a small hole in that tray that was allowing oil to be pulled into intake. Didn't smoke bad at all either. Just a thought. Good luck.

I may have mentioned to you before about my old bronco that had a quarter sized hole blown in the intake. It was actually blowing oil out the tailpipes. I had run compression check and vacuum and had actually put new valve guide seals on it when I decided to buy a long block. When I started pulling things off the old motor was when I discovered the hole in the intake. It was actually sucking the oil right into the cylinders. It would explain a whole lot if this was the case with yours. Just a thought.
