There's a large fundemental misunderstanding of how the Dodgers built to this point. It started about 11 years ago. They drafted talent in the forms of Lux, Seager, Bellinger, Buheler, Urias got cast offs in the form of J. Turner and Muncy and got them for long periods of time at minimum values so they could save and save money, and could continue to build prospect capital. Then they got the last really good cable TV deal, really in all of sports, which helped them continue to save money and use the excess to get the product on the field to a sustainable winning level. It really wasn't until 2020, year 6 by then, where the tide began to shift and they started to leverage the prospects and money for the stars. Even then, they were smart in their not over extending until really this year, 11 years later, where all the fruits have rippened enough for them to acquire at will. This was a long-term effort and yet fans and media want to believe that this "evil empire" was built in a day when that is a fallacy. Now fans want their team to emulate it, but don't want their team to actually spend the time to do it. They just want it now.
@mwheelonh10 күн бұрын
Totally agreed. And don't ignore the player development aspect. How many average to below-average players around the league look at the Dodgers and wonder "Could I be the next Justin Turner/Max Muncy/Chris Taylor/etc.? Is there some small tweak they could find in my game that could secure my long-term career? Are there any other teams that have a strong track record of doing that?"
@steelehere110 күн бұрын
You’re missing the part where the Dodgers planned to be competitive while while building up the team when ownership first took over which started with the Nick Punto trade that had the Dodgers taking on Carl Crawford and Josh Beckett’s bad contracts in order to acquire Adrian Gonzalez. They then in turn found ways to turn bad contracts with one year left over to other teams to take on worse contracts that had prospects attached to them. Their latest thing is to trade players and prospects blocked in their system (Mitch White, Matt Beaty, Ross Stripling, Gavin Lux and Michael Busch) to other teams for prospects to regenerate their farm system.

Plenty of Japanese players have come to the East coast in the past. The proximity factor is way too exaggerated by US media and fans. I am a Dodgers fan, but I disagree with this take. I like what the Mets are doing. Friedman spent over a decade rebuilding the Dodgers organization. People forget he never chased the big ticket free agents. They never lead the league in payroll. Now that the team has reached this point, it’s clearly time to go all in. This is what they strategically built towards and what is left to wait for? The Mets aren’t there yet. They are on the right path finally, and I’m sure will continue to improve, but now is not when they should go all in with their resources. It’s too soon. They are still spending significantly and actually competing to win, which can’t be said of most teams now. That’s all they need to worry about for the moment.

Exactly. The best move isn't to just make your team better for next season. It's to make your best team possible. Who would be a better 1B to pair up with Soto? Alonso or Vladdy? Sure, if you want to be better next season, it makes more sense to sign Alonso as Vladdy isn't available now. On a scale of 1-100, which team gives you the best chance to win a championship? A 90/100 Mets team for years 2025-30 or a 85/100 2025 Mets + 95/100 2026-30 Mets team? I would say the latter as you're a better team for 5/6 years. Does getting Alonso limit the types of move you'll make in 2026 and beyond? If yes, then you shouldn't get Alonso. Only thing makes sense is if you make Alonso the DH, but that would mean he doesn't get as big of a contract and not sure if Alonso would want that when another team could pay him as a 1B. Or maybe he doesn't get the contract he wants and has a 1 year deal. You essentially want to have a roster where you can't say "well that's a bad contract." The biggest contracts where the Dodgers fell into that were Kazmir (3 year 16m per year), Chris Taylor (15m aav for 4 years), and Joe Kelly. Notice how those aren't that big of a deal if you mess up on. There are no Xander Bogaerts or Eric Hosmer type deals (8 years 20m). If you screw up on those, you handicap your team for your entire championship window.
@tonyr344010 күн бұрын
Ohtani deferred his contract that’s why the dodgers are able to do what they been doing while Soto didn’t love the signing but would’ve been nice if he would’ve differed at least some of the money

Go ahead and add a salary cap. You will make the Dodgers unstoppable. They'll spend to the top and simply make even more money. They'll take the savings and put even more into international scouting and support staff. Oh, and L.A. has unlimited sponsorship money.

@@MH-qm3vs Oh really? So the Dodgers don’t need to play 162 regular season games and then make it to the NLCS? It’s just a given that they are the team that will guaranteed be there? And if the Mets focus on what the Dodgers are doing then they won’t need to worry about winning their own division and beating everyone else in order to get to the Dodgers? Hilarious that people are worrying about the Dodgers as if the Mets are the second best team behind the Dodgers. The Mets have far more to worry about and more immediate needs than what the Dodgers are doing. The Mets don’t need to be better than the Dodgers until they play each other in the playoffs. So, no, the Mets don’t need to worry about what the Dodgers are doing in January. The Mets need to worry about the Mets needs and the holes they need to fill.
