for those that don't know, these are not home built, they were made bu Ernest Doe &Co. of Ulting in Essex, England in the 1960's and early 70's by uniting 2 Ford Super Major skid units (tractor with no front axle or rear wheels fitted, delivered on a steel skid). I worked for one of their subsidury companies, Colchester Tractors.

I worked for Ernest Doe at this time (1963 ) and remember it well although I was working on the JC B side of the company.

Really unique tractor. Never seen anything like it. A usable solution to the problem of a low powered tractor but seems to me that once a bigger more powerful tractor became available these things would have become redundant overnight. Awesome curio though. Hope you guys keep them going. :-)

Peter Brennan These were actually very common in post-war Europe and other places. Not all that unique; a local solution to a local problem, like the homemade "doodlebug" tractors made from old truck and car parts in the US in the 1930's (we still have one my great-grandfather built on his old farm in Massachusetts). They did become redundant eventually, but not overnight, because it was cheaper to keep the thing running as long as possible than to buy a big new tractor, once they finally became available.

This combination seems to be birthed of an ex-diesel-railcar driver turned farmer who had a few too many ciders one night and a flash of drunken inspiration... then woke up in the tractor shed minus a couple of two-wheels but plus something rather incredible...

The two engine are linked togeather via a cable, the front engine runs slightly faster so the front unit pulls the rear unit, Hope this helps.

How were the motors synchronised, the throttle for example? In this video one can see the engines responding simultaneously to increased throttle.

The throttle cable goes through a box thing where it turns into two cables and they each go to a different motor

Just out of curiosity, why "Triple D" when it's just two tractors twinned together? I can only assume that the "Triple" part refers to something unrelated?

(BTW, your best plane of both the European and Pacific theatres? IE the Mustang? British design, British engine, merely built in US factories, and it happened to be a US engineer who hit upon putting the superior Spitfire-type engine into a frame that had up until that point been underpowered. You didn't have anything to match it up until then. If you hadn't finally joined the fray, you might not have had until much later on...).

That thing is cool. I don't understand why it would be necessary to have two engines but it's still cool. Seems like it would just be twice as much stuff to go wrong. It would probably cost less to produce a tractor with a bigger engine then one with two small ones.
@ohlookadragon
@ohlookadragon 10 жыл бұрын
from what i understand over in England where these were more popular.The large manufactures didn't sell their bigger machines over in Europe so it made sense to take two smaller tractors and combine them like you see in the doe kits. these tractors started out life as two totally complete machines and were later put together to pull bigger implements
@g8ymw
@g8ymw 10 жыл бұрын
Noah Ferrari Pretty well right, Noah. The Fordson Super Major had about 69 hp, and putting 2 together was one way of getting more power using standard tractors with the advantage of 4 wheel drive
@justforever96
@justforever96 9 жыл бұрын
sharpie443 It was necessary because they didn't SELL larger tractors in Europe at that time. It was cheaper to turn two small tractors into one big 4x4 tractor than it was two maintain two smaller ones, with the added benefit that you didn't have to pay a second guy to drive a second tractor to get the same productivity. You could pull a much larger implement behind it, and cover twice as much ground as a single tractor, without having to run two tractors at the same time, the same reason big tractors are popular even though they are expensive. It was relatively easy to pair two smaller tractors into one big one with local tools and shops, but to develop a whole new tractor and a big enough engine for it to pull enough requires a major industry to invest the capital. They didn't do so until later, because they felt there wasn't enough market to pay back the development costs. Most farmers were content with a single small tractor, so the tractor companies figured there just wasn't the demand there for them to sell enough to break into the black.

Just as you're welcome for the assistance in the Pacific, and our part in stopping Hitler before he got truly ambitious and came to have a go at you with everything a fully conquered Europe and Britain could throw at what would then be a somewhat outclassed USA. The term "allies" mean anything to you? You rescued shit, it was a group effort, and one that you took your sweet time signing up to. All that shit could've been done a year earlier in both cases, probably without nukes in the second.

Strange tractors 🚜 it would have made sence to use a more powerful engine rather than connect two tractors up in push & pull mode! They look good but seem a bit to big and clumsy and the nose end sticks out to much on the front tractor! A bit of 1960s madness by Ford lol 😆

In the UK they're licensed for use on the roads since they had to run on them to get from field to field which could be miles apart, also some farmers would use them as "go-to-town" vehicles.

As a complete outsider who's landed here via a link from something else entirely, I also have to ask, what's wrong with asking a fairly small registration fee for an event like this to cover admin / advertising / access to facilities / cleanup? You'll probably spend more on diesel for the day.

English language originates from England, that's Europe. You are speaking English (England, Europe) not American. Being criticized for a few grammar mistakes is indeed annoying and I think that people shouldn't argue about plowing or ploughing. Just enjoy the video!

@avalanchexy
@avalanchexy 10 жыл бұрын
Your fellow English cousin (farmer George Pryor from Essex) didn't sit around. He invented and perfected the tractor you are watching at. He's British (like his tractor), speaks English (the language that you Americanized), drinks tea and was a hard working farmer who invented a powerful tractor to get the "plowing or ploughing" job done. As you see the language or the accent dos not prevent you in doing some work (denying your origins could).

Not to mention the word shortening thing was the idea of your dictionary writing types in the late 19th century who seemed to figure that the general US populace was too short on mental capacity to deal with such long, not always 100% funetik wurdz and so needed the spelling altered to suit instead of just being taught the proper way to write them, which was no way for a cultured new-world gent to waste an afternoon. After all, it takes two weeks to cross the Atlantic, so who's going to notice?)

TahreyUK BTW the US (Packard) also improved your British engine and showed you how to build them. The US shortened up words in the "English" language. We don't sit on our asses and add extra letters to words. WE get up and get something done. We don't sit around "sippin' Te an eatin biscuits.And BTW who says we (the US) have to speak or write "your" language. We can develope our own and we did and if you dont like it "KISS OFF" And we were smart enough 200+ years ago to tell UK to go to HELL>

Wilbur Finnigan You realize how hypocritical it is for an American to whine about *other* nations insisting on getting things their own way or pitching a fit. How many wars and embargos has America started on other nations because they weren't doing things the way the US wanted? "Vietnam CAN'T be communist, because we don't LIKE communism. Never mind that that is what the people there VOTED they wanted!" Or how about the time when NATO thought it would be a good idea to switch to a small, lightweight .276 caliber intermediate cartridge as NATO standard for military arms, but the US refused, and forced them all to adopt the .308 Winchester full power cartridge as NATO standard by threatening to go home if NATO wouldn't play the way they wanted. So US forced everyone to adopt the 7.62 NATO round (and then spent a decade and tens of millions developing the M14 when the FAL was available and offered to them any time they wanted it). After all that, the US got into Vietnam and discovered that the M14 couldn't compete with the AK47, and so adopted a .223 caliber, lightweight intermediate round, which was smaller and lighter so a soldier could carry more of them, and also shot nice and fast and flat...exactly the same reason that NATO wanted to adopt the .276 before the US had a hissy fit and insisted on the 7.62mm. Once the US adopted the 5.56mm, it instantly demanded that NATO scrap all the 7.62mm rifles they had bought and buy M16's in 5.56mm instead. That's just one example out of many, so you can shut the fuck up about other countries trying to tell the US what to do. We aren't the fucking rulers of the universe, and we've just pissed everyone off royally since WWII, which is going to backfire on us once our economy completely collapses because we've sold all of our industry (and credibility) to other nations like China.
