I love you guys commitment to accuracy in testing. Great job! One thing missing is talk about how a normally aspirated engine looses 3% of its hp, an tq for every 1k above sea level. Was this test done at sea level? I feel that the reason the fuel mileage was so similar is because the Dinali was compensating out of pure displacement, where as the F150 was actually running very efficient. 3% is a lot of Hp loss especially when running the Gauntlet.

Did you guys know that this 10spd trans was co-developed by GM and Ford? Ford did the engineering on it. They're also co-developing a 9spd auto trans for passenger cars which GM has the engineering tasks on. Thus - this makes this test more a test of ENGINES and AERO vs transmissions... :/

Results as expected. Takes about the same amount of fuel to make power whether it's low displacement turbo or high displacement naturally aspirated engine. I'm going to bet most people that buy a Denali XL don't care much about fuel consumption/efficiency. Keeping the tank full is a tiny % of the ownership cost.

Suv's also have an aerodynamic advantage as well. But it also weighs more. i think that's why we saw such an even end result. maybe a base model chevy suburban work truck of fleet model version with that same engine and trans (which isn't an option) would actually win by a larger margin since the weight would be more even with the truck. probably anyway.

My 99 F250 4WD V10 got a consistent 10 MPG towing a 3 axle trailer loaded out. I don’t know what the weight was, but it was a breeze to pull. The right tool for the job is better than modifying the wrong one. Of course if you’re only towing occasionally, maybe an ecoboost is fine.

SUV's will always do better pulling an enclosed trailer than a pickup truck. WIND is a real factor and suv's help deflect some of it away from the trailer
@jimhlee
@jimhlee 6 жыл бұрын
I think the big factor here was that the SUV created a slip stream for the trailer. That is really a big factor. Might not seem like much, but it's a big part of racing, even in bicycles, which would explain the MPG difference even with the weight and engine displacement differences. The pick up truck had to break the aerodynamics for both itself and the trailer. I'd be interested to see a more comparable side by side comparison.
@gigemags1991
@gigemags1991 6 жыл бұрын
I looked for a long time for the right SUV to pull a trailer. Our cargo trailer weighs about the same when pulling. We pull 250 miles each way every month. The Chevy suburban transmissions do not hold up over time. Finally went out and found a fairly low mileage 2004 Ford Excursion and have never looked back. The V10 does get 8-10 daily without a trailer but with a large trailer gets the same. It is a beast pulling. And of course, didn't have to pay 70k. Paid 15k and it was practically new inside and out. We also wanted the Excursion for a family vehicle. Also, can't beat the cargo space.

So what is the overdrive ratio of the 10 speed versus the 6 speed? I bet it's not much. A lot smaller steps between gears though so it will be smoother shifting and should require less fuel to get up to speed. But cruising mileage will be about the same. Now then I'm sure the transmission does not have 10 speed clutches in it. Most likely only 5. It accomplishes 10 speeds by actuating two or more clutches at once. I've dealt with this in heavy duty applications and it works well and is extremely durable. How well these will hold up, time will tell.

Towing 7000 lbs mileage is about the same for most similar gasoline tow vehicles. Especially up hills and mountains! No surprise! With 10 speed maybe touch better. Duramax Diesel may get 2 mpg better! Another test would be flatter ground where lower trans gears may offer little bit better mileage figures. Pulling 7000 up hills uses a lot of gas and cannot get around it!

This just shows it takes a certain amount of energy to move mass. The GMC had a little bit of aerodynamic advantage of not having a bed but lost some due to internal efficiencies with two more cylinders and/or weighting more. I do like the solid rear axle on the full size gm SUVs. The low end torque with the ecoboost is great for towing. Either way, 9mpg sucks. That trailer must be like dragging a parachute around. Bring on the 1/2 ton diesels.

This is a "reasonable" comparison but definitely not an equal one. If you could have mounted a topper to the bed of the Ford and done this test, it would have been more comparable. Having an exposed bed and a "flat-nosed" trailer, the Ford had much more exposed wind resistance! All this said, virtually Identical mileage is great. I do own a 2018 F150 with the 2.7 ecoboost (and 10-speed tranny) and I tow every day with it. I will be mounting a topper in the future and I am looking forward to seeing how my wind resistance will be reduced by it and how my mileage will be affected. I am averaging 13.2 regularly with the mixed driving and speeds I do.

Good Video. Lets Not lose focus on the real world truck towing. Most people don't tow 7,000lbs plus everyday. The F150 3.5L Twin Turbo will get better fuel economy than the 6.2L GMC with normal everyday driving. Not to mention the F150 will have quicker acceleration than the 6.2L GMC. In this comparison, both vehicles essentially achieved the same fuel mileage while towing the same 7,000lb trailer. Moreover, if your a Heavy Hauling - Crazy Towing Maniac, the F150 3.5L Turbo has a max towing rating of 11,800+ lbs. - the 6.2L GMC cant touch that.

Tahoe RST, Yukon Denali, Escalade all have 6.2 and 10 Speeds either standard or available, the Escalade is the most expensive by a lot but the Tahoe with the RST package quickly catches up to the Yukon Denali in price. I don't understand why they make vehicles that directly compete with each other. I built and priced all three as close to the same as I could and the Tahoe RST with 6.2 and 10 speed with 4x4 as close to fully loaded as can be $76,000 new the Yukon Denali with the Same 6.2 and 10 Speed and 4x4 also fully loaded built was estimated to cost $81,000 new and the Escalade with the same equipment 6.2 is standard on the escalade as is the 10 Speed, I added 4x4 to make them comparable and it was estimated at $102,000 new. I find it comical that the GMC and Chevy are so closely priced when equally equipped when the GMC is obviously much more appealing when equipped this way, better looking in my opinion and is only $5,000 more but the Escalade is ridiculous at $21,000 more than Yukon Denali which is insane considering they all use the same chassis, same engine, transmission, 4x4 system, seating (with different materials, dash is not all that different), all 3 can be had with basically identical choices in Wheels, and they all offer a big brake Upgrade for the front for the same $2,900. It's just ludicrous that they haven't learned from the past and are still encroaching on their own market for sales. Sure they can argue that the difference in price makes them occupy slightly different shoppers, but the savvy ones will know that you can get basically all the bang and almost all the luxury by going with the GMC and it's only slightly more than the Tahoe but is also a very large amount cheaper than the Escalade.

I have a feeling that this 30 second method is not always consistent, and I've watched all your videos. It is next to impossible for a modern day car's MPG calculation to be off by that much: fuel injection is duty cycle is very precise, and speedometer (and odometer) simply cannot be off by 20%. Perhaps you should list computer's MPG values normalized with odometer reading of trip (to normalize speedometer error) next to your pump readings. That might give more insight.

I think they are surprised because the Ecoboost or what it stands for it to get better fuel economy by using a smaller engine and turbo charging it but even now it only seems to match power out put at the expense of reliability and mpg because the GMC weights more so all things being equal it's safe to say the 6.2 is more fuel efficient than the 3.5 Ecoboost.

I think that what jessie wanted to know was the actual curb weight of the vehicles, not the gross combined weight rating. And as far as that goes, I would bet that the yukon is about a 1000lbs heavier than that F150.

Not surprising. GM knows V8's are the go to engines. Those 6.2 liter engines were made to work. Unlike Ford who actually thought a twin turbo V6 was a good idea for a full sized pickup or SUV

Similar 10 speeds. They are identical parts on the inside. Just different case and programming. Gm co- developed the 10 speed with ford. I other words helped Ford pay for test and development which is why Ford version was out 1 year earlier. While ford was making their transmission gm bought the rights to the internal parts and then had to design a case and program it.
