Openstreetmap already updated the Baltimore bridge on their map. Now it shows the line being broken, and using the information function shows "collision with a container ship in 2024"

Brilliant. The bridge is (was) right down the road from me although I rarely ever use(d) it. The reality of this is still so unreal for us here. It is going to mess up the commute for hundreds of thousands of people and make it more difficult to interact with the port here.

i prefer openstreetmap's approach: the part of the bridge that is underwater is not on the map, but the entire area that is closed off is marked as such.

i feel like it should stay on google maps just like it is, with the extra little warning thingy, for as long as it's unsure whether the bridge will be rebuilt or not (unless that slipped by me and is already decided) if they decide it will not be rebuilt, then it can vanish because its no longer intercepted (by it being collapsed), it is now gone

Gordie Howe International Bridge between Detroit, MI, and Windsor, ON is a little more than halfway complete. It doesn't show in the map view, but you can search for it, and it drops a pin in the middle of the Detroit River but no bridge. It does show a photo the incomplete bridge on the left side of the page

I was thinking of this example. I went to go see the progress so I needed to search it up. There's a boat launch right beside Fort Wayne which has a great view. There's still a small gap in the middle, but even when it's connected, it will take about 6 months to do signage, road work, etc. so we'll see when it shows up especially with the new ramps around it.

I ran into a weird example of this philosophical question when planning a road trip in California. I was trying to get the driving distance from Lee Vining to the main part of Yosemite. The road you would take is closed for winter. I was planning for a future trip when the road would be open, but at that moment, the road happened to be closed. Google Maps assumed I wanted to go there immediately, and just refused to present that route option to me. There was no way for me to tell it, "Yes, I know that road is closed NOW, but I'm not trying to go there NOW".

The Florida DOT has a system set up where they can notify Google about road closures in real time. This is mostly used for tropical storms and hurricanes.

FYI toycat -- when we say spur road names out loud, we say like "Six Ninety-Five" rather than "Six Nine Five" or "Six Hundred Ninety Five." Preserves the idea that it's a highway connected to I-95 :)

It's not just spur roads but any three digit highway. For instance, US Hwy 281 runs all the way from Canada to Mexico and we say it two-eighty-one.

7:40 To answer that question, I can turn to a recently opened highway in Utah, State Route 177, or the West Davis Connector. It did not exist on Google Maps until it opened. I knew the highway was there and being marked a couple weeks prior, but couldn't find it anywhere except for connecting the dots on satellite imagery until it opened.

I know of another low-key much smaller bridge that collapsed recently and I don't think anyone at Google noticed, there's not even a warning or anything like with the Baltimore Bridge.

I think if the bridge stays gone for a while, say several months with no work on replacement, then Google should take the bridge off the map. It could be represented with a dashed line in the meantime. In any case, it's not going to be updated in just a couple days or a week; the red bubble notification is distinctly a short-term measure

Is Google Maps showing the bridge, or the route of the highway? The route of the highway doesn't change because of the temporary closure of a portion of it. I think Google Maps handled this exactly the right way. I appreciate the varied points of view presented here, nonetheless.

I don't really get your point. What's the difference between a bridge and a road on Google maps? Accordingly, what's the difference between a collapsed bridge and a road block or a road under construction? Maps always marks blocked ways and never completely deletes them as long as it can be assumed they'll reopen it any soon.
