I thought Grande was able to see nuance. Obviously AC saying he always took no for an answer while also saying he has a pattern of trying to persuade women into having sex with him CAN both be true at the same time, and for the LATTER he apologised and that apology is NOT contradicted by him making clear he never crossed the mentioned line. Also, we havent heard any precise accounts of conversations. For instance, the first accuser may have said "no" in her mind in hindsight. In reality it may have been (and it seems more probable given the situation and her reported inebriation) that she deflected 2 times, as in "I am tired", "I have a boyfriend", but never actually literally said "no". That is how a lot of people in many situations act, not just dates. They arent confrontational and dont draw a strict line because of it even when they want to and in hindsight think they did. And that is most likely part of what AC says when he says, the accusers havent given full context of what happened.

People rarely blame themselves for anything. None of us are comfortable with the idea that we have done something wrong, so we all have a natural tendency to rationalize and make excuses so as to pacify our conscience and allow us to live with ourselves and save face. The real struggle is being brutally honest with ourselves. If we gave everybody the benefit of the doubt to the same degree that we excuse our own behavior, we'd probably get along better.

Yeah. I think it's hard for pretty much anyone to be completely honest and truthful with themselves when it comes to more serious things like this, because I think it invokes some sort of survival mechanism or "fight or flight" response in us. Nobody wants to fully admit they have done something like this because it would mean they would potentially be cast out of their group, be shunned and hated by society, and lose other important aspects of life. Essentially a feeling of losing ones life. So the automatic response is to go into defense. To minimize the damage as much as possible to try and save face. It's a very human response. To fully admit to serious wrongdoings is incredibly difficult when you are aware that it has serious consequences. You would be going against your own natural inclination to survive.

As a female, how did I know? I could read...Playboy, Hustler & visit Tower of Books. It was an interesting journey. Probably my best contribution was how I raised my two sons. Like, I wanted to feel empowered but at the end of the day I just felt taken advantage of. And most male role models were associated with sexual aggression, leaving guys sort of lost about where confidence comes from. On top of it, we all got gold stars for participation and given this impression we could do no wrong, and didn't learn how to admit and take accountability for mistakes. Just to play devils advocate, the first THREE girls I asked out, and was rejected by in high school, all got mad at me for "not trying harder" when I took no for an answer. I'm only 28 too btw, so this was somewhere around 2010. Fortunately that's changing, but there's a still a disturbingly high amount of girls and women that think it's cute to reject the guy they like in order to test how committed he is to earning their affection. They genuinely understood how dangerous it is to promote that behavior, and how infuriating it is for us guys that refused to play that game from day one.

As a former Victim Advocate many survivors shared their personal stories of non-consent. There is absolutely a big element of socialization that needs addressed, for females with boundary setting and agreeability, and with males a sexual conquest culture and accountability. Healthy males can be a huge part of this shift, in dialogue with other males, and interpersonal relationships with females. Bottom line is women often say no louder with their bodies than their mouths, out of fear, intoxication, or cultural expectation.

It reminds me of that SNL skit on sexual harassment in the workplace...the unattractive man approaches women employees with a question about work and they scream "sexual harassment" but when the good-looking man shows up in his underwear with the same group, they are eager and excited to get his attention! Most women who go to bars are looking for a hook-up, and that is the same for men. He didn't commit a crime and some --- despite thier outrage --- encourage him --- why take him back to her apartment or consent to "sexual acts" If women want to be equal, they should be accountable for thier actions.

Men and women are conditioned to react to uncomfortable situations differently. Men learn to fight and cause a scene when they're uncomfortable, women learn to go along to get along, not cause a scene, and just wait for it to be over. He stated that he thought he'd be a loser if he left the bar alone, meaning he most likely heavily pressured the woman to let him go home with her. She was probably super uncomfortable, didn't want to cause a scene in the bar, and also didn't want to be rude. So she went along with and and prayed that he'd change his mind and leave her alone, or that someone would step in. Instead of victim blaming women because you as a man don't understand what it's like to be a woman in that situation, hold abusers and harassers accountable for THEIR actions.

I think when two people are drunk and both are poor communicators and the guy has wrong expectations formed by media and bad influences, which andrew admitted to, it would be more complicated. Most media has a warped view of consent, and boys pretend to know more about sex than they do by copying what they learn from media, because their parents are not open about it. I find it weird that Dr grande makes sexual assault jokes instead of addressing why so many men think like andrew claims he used to. also, consent is extremely complicated. most people don't want to work for the companies they work for, but "consent" to under the duress of starvation or social shame for lacking employment. is that consent? if you replace that work with sex work is it consent, even if everyone fakes an enthusiastic yes? indentured servitude is consent (they signed a contract), but is it really? what if you did the same with sex work?

I believe in Andrew. Look at the situation wholly, and the timing of it. He JUST came out with an extremely controversial documentary that puts political figures in the spotlight. Why would these girls waited until now? Some of them have ties to the radical figures he put on blast. Look at the big picture. I personally have been a victim of SA. I still believe that we need to carry out the American justice of “innocent before proven guilty” and to not ruin a young man’s life with thoughtless gossiping.

These young people see certain behaviors as permissible due to the acceptance of "hook-up culture." It's more prevalent nowadays, but I can assure you that it was definitely present in the 1970s bar/club culture. Most certainly not "romantic" behavior, I can remember many times when my women friends would say that a man "won't take 'no' for an answer." Our culture definitely needs a wake-up call as far as consent and expectations are concerned.

Plus, if a man vigorously “chases” a woman who does NOT immediately part ways with a man but rather does “some stuff” with him after she took him home, there is no way ANY of that is a clear “No!” I can totally understand why he is legit confused. @@Meduse04 Propriety would dictate that a woman should not have an unrelated male to stay in her home alone with her overnight. I am completely ignorant of who Andrew Callahan is and his work... But I found the point about "persistence is flattery" resonant. Drunk men in bars, random strangers on social media, seem to have a common theme of unable to differentiate between friendly smile and a "come hither" signal...and have been taught that in the movies, the underdog nerd who admires the cheerleader from afar always gets her in the end after she finds out the handsome quarterback is no good. Trouble is, in real life, women want to be left alone after the first no. Which leads to many resentful incels writing books on how to be an alpha and treat them mean to keep them keen. It's a jungle out there.

I just don't understand how consent can be so nebulous to people. On our first date my boyfriend asked me point blank "would it be alright if I kissed you?" And I enthusiastically said yes! That was so easy! And I thought it was extremely romantic. Now that we know each other better after many months of a relationship we use mostly nonverbal consent cues. But in the beginning when you're meeting someone and just getting to know them you can just ask. Just. Ask. And if the answer is no, then that's it.

I would push back and say in most instances you should NEVER ask to kiss someone, it will more often than not kill the mood and backfire (glad it worked for you!). Rather as a man I like to be hyper aware and fully confident that an attempted kiss will fully and without a doubt be accepted. Social cues such as prolonged good eye contact, little touches from both parties, laughter, a generally good vibe. If something like a small shoulder touch illicits a negative response then thats a clear no to any further advances (much less a kiss) in that moment. The trouble is of course with inexperienced individuals who are not aware of the social cues that make up a positive vibe are, because they've rarely, if ever been there.

No means no and it sounds like when he was told no, he stopped, according to the other woman. This woman consented, and just bc she later regretted it for whatever reason, that means he’s to blame? What power dynamic did he have over her? None that I see. He’s not rich he’s not famous he’s not in a position of power he’s not a big time influencer like a Logan Paul or ugh whoever. Idk man, just seems like he’s just a young guy who lets alcohol get the better of him but he still has the wherewithal to know when someone says no it means no, if they mean it, and aren’t like “nooo, stooop, you’re silly” but really wanting to have sex. But you know when people are playing a role, or actually not wanting to be touched. Hard to know who to believe. I’m not a listen and believe person, I need to hear both sides. I find so much of this story interesting. Mainly because it deals with character types that I don't interact with in my day to day life. Andrew doing interviews where the only goal is to embarrass the person being interviewed says a lot about his character and that's the type of person you stay away from. Also the woman who rejected him at the bar then invited him to her apartment, then asked him to pay for her therapy. There's something in that story that doesn't add up. The women I hang out with would just be like "no. You're a creep GTFO" at the bar and it would be over.

It is extremely strange that she invited him to her apartment, but if she is emotionally/mentally unwell then it does make sense that he could have pressured her into allowing him to come over. She also caved and had various sex acts with him. Some people are traumatized and groomed as kids to be afraid to say “no”. Acknowledging that he pressured her and was hurtful to her after the fact (when she was sober) warrants perhaps a bit of help with the costs of therapy. This will likely cost her a few thousand dollars The better take away for her would be to stop drinking immediately and practice saying “no” really firmly. But we are all on our own journeys

Consent was certainly depicted as a gray area in those. (I’m sorry I can’t provide specific movies, but I’m thinking old-western type movies and any with a dashing “bad boy” type lead)

This power dynamic thing. I'm sure "power dynamics" play a role in social situations but when it comes down to it, adult women are full moral agents and It's really important not to undermine that. If we start saying women can't be expected to navigate dodgy situations on their own then we are saying women aren't really ready to be equal members of society. I don't know exactly how these situations went down but it's important to get rid of naivety, use your intuition and robustly protect your own integrity. If you're getting weird vibes from a guy, leave, don't stay around to see how things turn out (unless of course, you like being in dangerous situations). There is a line that's crossed when one person starts to physically intimidate or control another and different moral thinking is involved when we consider those situations. Absent of physical intimidation or control however, its really important that we expect women to act as full moral agents capable of navigating society on their own (if that's what we want women to be). We should also consider the guys behaviour but we should centre women's autonomy in these scenario's, it's the best way we can help keep them safe.

I would say that consent is not clear in romantic relationships. Nonverbal consent means something at the beginning of a relationship. After a man hits on you and you rebuff him, do not ask him to your apartment. Mixed messages. The other situations sound like both people were not clear and there was a 'dance' happening and he backed off when there was a clear message. Women are often torn about intimacy, that makes sense. I guess, the best answer is to go back to 'no ring, no sex.' That would make consent very clear.

If every man that ever pressured a woman into sex, whether it actually led to sex or not, had to publicly apologize there wouldn’t be time to report other news. I think a lot of men would be shocked if a woman from their past came forward and said they felt overly pressured into sex. They would react just like Andrew…”I thought everything that happened was perfectly normal”because there is a huge difference in perception between men and women. This is slowly changing but I think there’s a large percentage of men who behave just like Andrew did but would clutch their pearls if anyone dared say they were borderline rapey, even though what they do is borderline rapey.

Thanks for pointing out the consent issue. It really is not that complicated. Pressuring somebody and asking over and over again after they’ve already said no should be a pretty obvious indicator that a boundary is being crossed. If you have to twist someone’s arm to get what you want from them, they have not consented. It’s more likely they have conceded the fight due to mental exhaustion and are just “dealing with the situation” to get the person to shut up and go away as soon as possible before something worse happens. The dynamics of sex should not be like that of a suspect and a detective in an interrogation room, with the suspect getting more and more worn down under the pressure until they crack. If things have gotten that far, it is way past the time to stop. I think what another commenter said about socialization is really key. This dynamic between women and men is pretty normalized in our society, and both sides have some work to do to fix that. I hope this case and others can bring some awareness to the need for change.

Our mammalian nature isn't going to be easily "fixed". Male mammals are hardwired to pressure for mating rights. While it's a noble idea to imagine all men can overcome their essential drivers, not all will be able to. It's particularly difficult for men raised in personal or cultural contexts which allow for male dominance or male misbehaviour. IOW it's not as simple as men simply deciding to do better. Our opposable thumbs and big brains don't obviate the fact we're rutting mammals.

@@pm2886 meh. Idk. We were hardwired for all sorts of vile shit that people don’t do in Polite society. If we can deny our urge to fart or murder, we can deny our urge to beg girls to smash. If we can’t, maybe we belong in cages. Edit: you’re not incorrect. Sorry. I don’t disagree that we can’t abolish criminal behavior, but we can certainly shift societal standards.

So let me get this straight. A guy kisses a girl and, wanting to take it further, the girl resists. He doesn't, according to the video, do anything but get a little over zealous . "He discountinued his advances." Second story, a girl takes him back to her apartment from a bar. They're both intoxicated. He makes advances. They have consentual 'sexual acts'. WHY, then, is he called out publicly for these? Are these a crime? The only reason he's publicly apologetic is his career is in jeopardy. WTF, are we going to start publicly lambasting young people who get rejected and try a little more after a kiss??

I will preface this by saying I have no idea who this guy is, but I can say I’m so happy I’m not a young man in today’s culture. So he came on to one women too aggressively for her liking.. stopped at a kiss; yet she’s traumatized? The other woman, although knowing his sexual interest in her, invites him back to her apartment and begrudgingly has relations with him because he “pressured her”.. and she too is traumatized? And asked for money for therapy instead of reporting him… Unpopular opinion, but some of these situations are part of learning some life lessons; for young men and women alike. Like don’t pressure someone into acquiescing intimacy and on the flip side, learn to be resolute and firm in your decisions. Don’t invite a man back to your apartment after you’ve already rebuffed his advances because that gives the wrong signals.

Consent flip/flop can happen many many times in a short period of time, and is not uncommonly retracted retroactively due to buyer's remorse. According to one female comedienne, the most attractive attribute of a woman is consent. Once ppl realize this, it's not hard to see how it can be weaponized and exploited to get attention, validation, travel, and overall simpery lol

I have never heard of Andrew or his channel before. Maybe I'm missing some of the facts, but I don't know what he's meant to have done to have to apologise. In both instances he didn't overstep any mark that I can see - not proceeding when told "no", and not doing anything that wasn't consensual. It sounds like he was a bit of a "dick", as many Internet personalities tend to be. That's not a crime however, and this story and the allegations against him sound like a bit of a hit piece against him, by people who hope to gain from doing so, again as is very common. As I say, maybe not all the facts were presented here.

It seems as a culture we are incapable of two things at once. In this case; a- validate these womens lived experiences and b- empathize with AC for his ignorance. Ultimately his accusers forgiveness or rejection matter most, but we entitled viewers love to cast judgment on things we don’t truly understand because we are ignorant to the specifics. There has been a tectonic shift in culture and many are still trying to adapt. It doesn’t absolve them, it just means they’re often the byproduct of deeply entrenched misogyny perpetuated by a patriarchal system. You don’t have to agree just try to understand. I stand with his accusers, yet would love for people to be less quick to attack and quick to condemn when we lack the nuances or lack of nuances of what happened. If nothing else, hopefully this will force men to look at their tactics and do better. Society can grow from this, it’s a shame that the lesson isn’t victimless. Respect.

Consent isn't taught in schools, yet should be and practiced EVERY DAY with children so it is ingrained in them and well-practiced. Sadly, some people (men AND women) have mental disorders/personality disorders that don't allow them to give a **** about someone else's consent and they just get on with the acts. Practice makes perfect in ALL situations. Let's begin practicing daily. :) Thank you Dr. Grande!

I totally agree. When I was a kid we had a group at our school that made a presentation about consent. The song was so catchy, I still remember it decades later... "My body's nobody's body but mine!" Anyway we definitely learned that we could tell someone they were giving us the NO feeling.

It's kind of hard to teach kids consent as a parent, since there are a lot of situations where your child will clearly withdraw consent from participating in an activity or situation, but that's just too bad, because it has to happen. As a child I had to attend etiquette classes and cotillion training, so I absolutely did not consent to boys touching me and dancing with me, but I didn't have a choice in the matter. At school I could just bite them and they'd generally give me a wide berth.
