Batman Returns is one of my all time favorites. No, it really didn't age amazingly well but there are so many standout moments that are burned into my brain. Not to mention the amazing video game adaptation on SNES. Fantastic memories with this one.

Batman Returns is my favorite Batman film and probably one of my favorite comic book films in general. It’s visually stunning, beautifully weird, sexual and gothic, and totally works for my sensibilities. It totally holds up because nothing before or since is anything like it. Art doesn’t age, only the context around it does. You can simply choose not to apply it and evaluate it on its own merits.

I believe they have since seperated Batman Returns and B&R into their own seperate universes. That Batman '89 comic is supposedly not only canon, but it brings back Two-Face and introduces a new Robin, who are absolutely based on Billy Dee and Marlon Wayans.

Batman Forever is still a continuation of Returns. There is a split now where you can go from Returns to that comic or to Returns.

Batman Returns will forever hold a place in my heart and is still my favorite Batman movie next to The Dark Knight and The Batman. Also Dinosaucers was effing awesome back in the day!

I dont think shoemaker has "No integrity". While I agree Batman and Robin goes too far, forever stands as an actually good movie with real passion and love for the material.

Yeah, but Sal is still stuck in the Batman discourse of 10+ years ago where the Burton films were good because they were dark and serious, man. And the Schumacher films were bad because they were dumb and gay. Things seem to be changing now with more people acknowledging how goofy and campy the Burton films are and acknowledging the genuine passion and craft behind the Schumacher films. But Sal's brain is still in the "Batman bad cause gay" mode.

Yes, Michelle Pfeiffer is extremely hot, but that's not the reason why so many of us love this Catwoman. Personally, I think Zoe Kravitz looks better in the catsuit than Pfeiffer (black leather and bondage gear don't really do it for me in general), and overall I now think Kravitz is the best live-action Catwoman, but the reason you can't dismiss Pfeiffer is the complexity of the performance. If all you see is 'woman gets pushed from window and revived by cats' you won't get it, but this character's trauma and psychological turmoil is very powerful, and whilst Kravitz is the better Catwoman, I honestly think Pfeiffer gives the overall superior performance (partly because she has more to work with/more layers to reveal).

Zoe looks just like modern day catwoman 2000 to now and pfiffer was that era catwoman. Love both. I do hope we get some more zoe not a lot but some. Id almost watch a catwoman movie with her and batman shows up to coop like they do/did in the batman thatd be sweet.

This conversation is pretty good, but I still give it a 0/10 because you didn't mention the rocket penguins and how awesome they are. Stan Winston made those giant penguins, and countless hours were spent putting rockets and helmets on a bunch of real ones, and that is to be commended. Also, I just think that they're neat. 🐧🚀😄

To me the problem with this movie is the same thing that would happen years later with Patty Jenkins and Wonder Woman. The director did an amazing job with the first movie then the studio gave them total control and it got to their heads and prioritize their own stupid artistic vision over the themes and legacy of the character they are adapting. At least with Batman Returns you can see that it is a unique product by a unique autor. Wonder Woman 1984 is the most basic boring generic superficial attempt to make a dumb romantic comedy out of a superhero movie.

As far as female empowerment, this movie came out the year after Terminator 2. We had Sarah Connor in 2 great movies and Ripley in Alien and Aliens. Pfeiffer was certainly an extreme on another end of that spectrum. Sigourney Weaver was nominated for an Academy Award for Aliens. Returns came out the same year as Alien 3 which yeah, not great. Lee Meriweather was great in Batman 66 as far as a movie and you had Lois Lane even though she was a damsel in distress at times.

I hate this movie so much. I have tried to rewatch it multiple times but I never make it more than halfway through. I love Michelle Pfeiffer as an actress but her Catwoman was awful, not her fault though. Same thing goes for Danny DeVito as Penguin.

Batman Returns does not hold up in any way. It’s tonally all over the place and thank God WB wanted to change directions where Forever is better. It’s more of a Catwoman and Penguin film and has one great scene with the ball.

@@yungc9050 I personally disagree, but I guess it all depends on what you want from a Batman film. I like a Batman that's entirely set in Gotham, where the city is a character itself, and where Batman is focused on detective work rather than training to become a fighter. But we all love different elements of the character, which is why it's great we have so many interpretations.
