Indeed he is! I always turn to Johan asking about certain speakers and pickups for guitars among other things. And as you stated; speakers are such a big factor if not the most important. One thing’s for sure (Johan has made these comparisons a hundred times), there isn’t such a thing as one Greenback, one V30, one G12T-75 and so on. They all differs from year to year, different materials, different impedance. An example: I was NOT a fan of G12T-75 at all. But despite that I bought a JCM800 4x12 cab; because I wanted the cab so that I could swap the speakers later. But I changed my mind cause those G12T-75s are absolutely lovely. They almost sound like pre Rola Greenbacks! Johan you are free to borrow it any time if you want to feature it in your great channel. 🤗

Yeah, I was thinking same. If you've ever done a video you know how much work goes into it. Setting up gear and lighting, recording, editing, software, uploading - whew! Just changing the speakers out - that alone in this one - lots of time for sure.
@SFolkes97

@@danielforsberg4018 It's weird isn't it? The G12T-75's were the first Celestions I ever owned - back in the 80's. Liked them best. Then gear mania and GAS went crazy and there were a million choices. I didn't like 'em anymore. Then I dug 'em out and paired with other speakers - loved 'em again. Hated V-30's in the early 90's. Put mine away. Was gonna sell 'em but decided to thrash the heck out of 'em and see if I could break the ice pickiness. It worked. Got some newer ones and loved them. Now SpectreSoundStudios channel says they've been changed. Well, it's all part of the rich pageantry of gear life.

We’re all forgetting how much fun he gets to have doing this. Just leave your camera rolling. There’s no work! Just kidding. The cream… Another great illustration of how higher wattage speakers have to forfeit a lot of tone to accommodate higher wattage. Low wattage speakers absolutely rule.

Might be that its just newer. The Edge has said that he only uses the ones (blue) that have been used the most as they are more open sounding. Give the cream 25 years of abuse and it should be a lot better. I do think they it does sound closer to the silver then the blue.

Really great selection Johan. You're becoming THE audio encyclopedia for guitar speaker sounds :) Some suggestions for further work: "thump" became recognized early in the 70's as a very impressive potential component to excellent high gain guitar sounds. EVH, for example, incorporated the latest advances of that into his arsenal around that time. The new Cream speaker really excels there. What about 15" speakers? Can they perform in the thump area as well or better than 12" speakers?

Love all the speaker videos this is a great resource for anyone looking for a speaker stellar job Johan. I have a 90 watt Creme in a Orange 112 that I use with my Kemper Powerhead it sounds great I'm really happy with it. The cab came with a Vintage 30 which only lasted about 2 months before it blew up. That's what you get when you push 300 watts through a speaker rated for 65 watts. But it was a blessing in disguise because I got the creme it takes the power better but I still have to be careful with the volume because I don't want to blow it.

Speakers, even more than most gear - so many rabbit holes! But these are ALL good. I have 2 Cream 90's, 1 by itself, and one mixed with another speaker - it's a great all-arounder - smooth, can punch hard, but always keeps its composure. My favorite of the oldies here is the T-731. I have used all brands but now it's mostly Celestion. Used to hate V-30's, then they changed them and I like the ones I've gotten in the last 8 years, and now I hear they're changing them again. Uff! Glad I got the ones I like. The Cream 90, my V-30's, the G12K-100, G12-65 either Heritage or Cream, are my favorite Celestions with current Greenbacks included, but only if they are mixed with something else. I only play clean to low/medium gain though.

To long did not read, I am new born. Use to diss Alnico Cream. Now I love it for specific amps and purpose. Not so long after my original post I was in a guitar store on two days pedal show. First day I went there to see my friends. I was asked to bring my amp on second day. So I came and I have had small presentation/demonstration of my amp. I brought just my amp thinking it is a big store they have tons of cabinets. So I went true the shop and best I could find was Bartel 1x12 cabinet. I have tested my amps on many cabinets and I really know how they sound. Well I have designed schematics and I have built it I better know how they sound. I was looking for 2x12 or even 4x12 while they just give you more effective demonstration and can move more air. This Bartel cab was open back 1x12 but knowing their quality I went for it. I was still wondering is it enough while 1x12 are not that impressive sounding most of the time. I have connected it and it sounded epic. It was 8 Ohm cabinet. It sounded so balanced. It have had all the details one can wish for. Very sophisticated sound. Very mature sound that could do everything with style. I looked into it and to my surprise there was a Alnico Cream inside!!!! Did not sounded dark at all. It was loud enough and did all it was asked from it. I have to admit that guitar was boutique build LP style guitar with P90's. Player was exceptional and pedal board was boutique as well. Anyhow later on someone brought Two Rock vertical 2x12. Huge oversized open back cabinet with oval opening on the back. Very big, heavy and very expensive cabinet. Connected amp to it and well, it was brutal. Sound pressure was close to 4x12. It was very impressive. Louder sounds better most often, but sound of that Bartel 1x12 was just better and nicer. Two Rock cab was more dynamic and moved serious amounts of air. It was impressive. But real sound lovers preferred my amp with that Bartel cabinet. So sure cabinet can make or break the sound of the speaker. State of the speaker is also very important. It seems Alnico Cream does needs longer break in. Anyhow sound I have heard have had nothing to do to the other cabinet with Alnico Cream that I have heard before. It did not sound like this recording either. Sure way different amps make difference as well. So yeah I got my self Alnico Cream 8 Ohm to give it a proper chance. Played it like 4-5 hours in single session. I have a setup with two amps and 2x12 in stereo. I can select where the signal is going with my G3. So On the other side I have had my current favorite 12" ceramic magnet Celestion Hempback 8 Ohm. This was there as a reference. So I've played some compared then played again and so on. First on clean later with driven sound. When it started Hempback was sounding sweeter and lot warmer. Seems that it has more low end and can work in the smaller box as well. Alnico Cream first hour was not sounding that great. It have had something nice there but it was still hidden. Upper midds and highs were not accurate and have had something rough in it. Longer I have played, better it got. Closer to what I remember from that Bartel cabinet. BTW Bartel switched to Fane A60 Alnico speakers for all of their cabs. No clue why or how. So clean comparation with reference in form of the Hempback was great help. Started in big favor of the Hempback. Alnico cream was having way less lows at the start of the session. Highs and middle were nicer by Hempback. At the end of the session tables turn. Alnico Cream definitely took over the show on clean tones. Low end came up a lot but still less then on the Hempback. Middle became less prominent but extremely good sounding. Middle range become nicer and warmer. Top end became more accurate and warmer too. Hempback is classified as American sounding speaker and yes it is bit more scooped then your average Celestion. But it ain't scooped as anything USA made in Fender amps either. It still has those nice Celestion Ceramic medium magnet midds. It actually does very nice with driven sound to. It even reminds me on greenback Pulsonic M models. With bit more lows and sure bit different midds and top end. Well nothing new sounds as old Pulsonic Greenback M. This is in my setup with my amps and way I generate gain structure as well as at my sound levels. Anyhow I have played it then with gain and once again I could notice that break in was still not over. With same gain structure Alnico Cream lost some of it's top end (similar to sound on this video) and became way more middle centric. Hempback kicked ass. Hempback was broken in though. First 3 hours I have played with my power LP Style guitar. It was closest guitar so I took that one. Then I wanted to try something with single coils and closest guitar was Squire Telecaster 50's with changed electronics and aged pickups from some expensive Fender aged Custom Shop Telecaster. It sounds better than it should but it is not world class Telecaster. I currently own just that Telecaster because they are not really my type of guitar despite that I love them and respect them. IF Fender I am more Strat person. Though last decade it seems I am Les Paul player. Though I enjoy many different guitars. Again starting with clean and then with dirt. Now clean was still great but driven sound was still changing. Then I have run out of time. Later on I have played it with my R7 Murphy lab but with extremely low levels so I could not hear it proper. Nor enjoy it that much. Anyhow Alnico Cream. Well ti needs break in. Long one as well. For many normal amplifiers, Alnico Gold can be an awesome upgrade. On some amps it can be to much as well. On vey high end point to point boutique hand wired amps top end and clarity can be double edged sword where speakers like Alnico Gold can turn to be over bearing and top heavy. With such amplifiers, especially with clean sound Alnico Cream 8 Ohm of the current production is awesome. What it does with midds and highs and details is wonderful. Singing middle range. Beautiful. Balanced and detailed. Very nice sound both for the rhythm and for the single notes solos. Overdriven sound? Well for some type of sounds M size ceramic magnet Celestions are the way to go. Sure some Alnicos models do it better with some amps but Alnico Cream is not bad either with correct amplifier. In my case it was more expressive in solos then my Hempback. Hempback have had ridiculous power chords sounds. Well I haven't had time for more break in and comparing. Need to play it way more. One thing is sure. Mixed together, they sounded stupid good both clean and driven. Alnico Cream 8 Ohm is here to stay. Hempback as well. Sure My Fulback and G12-35XC and few others are there to stay as well and I love those still. But one thing is sure, my view of Alnico Cream changed for 180 degrees. Now I think that with proper amp it is extremely good speaker. That said it is for the specific driven sounds and amps. It is not speaker to replace original Greenback M Pulsonic Pre Rola speakers in a Marshall stack powered by Superlead 100 in ideal reproduction of Epic classic Rock sound. But in the todays modern gear it certainly can make new type of epic sounds.

Own the alnico cream in a 1x12, it's a very smooth and pleasant speaker. Not a good fit to compare to the 60s Alnicos which are quite a bit more chimey. The alnico cream is a lot more versatile, and obviously can handle way more power. I like it but don't love it. Not a ton of character, a little too polite at times but I do know whatever I plug into it will sound good and not harsh which has its advantages.

Thanks for your work Johan. Excellent comparison. I’d say it depends on your use and the amp it’s in. I had a ‘64 Elac Alnico that was very good, an Alnico Blue that sounded quite harsh and a G12 75T that lacked a bit of tightness all were replaced with an Alnico Cream that’s very versatile, powerful and suits many genres. Combined in a 2x12 with a CreamBack G12M65, it gives very good results. Maybe yours wasn’t fully broken in yet ? The ´73 GreenBack really shines with all the riffs. Cheers !

I've got a 2x12 open back cabinet with Alnico Creams in and it does sound very cool. I can hear in this video that the older lower power alnico speakers all have a fatter more vocal lower midrange that makes it sound like there's more sustain that the Creams don't do. I don't mind that tightness in the Cream: it can be a great benefit for some amps and styles. I've also been playing around with some of the current Fane models: the neo mag N30 really has that singing vocal quality, very interesting speaker, and the new F30 has a great rock midrange, kind of more greenback than any of their other ones I've tried.

Hello Johan, in this comparison I would say that the new Celestion alnico 90watt Cream holds up very well with the other vintage alnico speakers, certainly it hasn' t the sweetness on mids and highs that aged speakers have, but being " mid pokey" the good news is that is very similar to the vintage greenback! The only drawback I would point is that the new Celestion Alnico 90w is bloody expensive, at almost 300 euros competes with vintage speakers, cheers!

@@idiotburns ok, I see the point. I'm kinda blues/jazz/Americana player and live in the clean/crunch spot. I barely play cranked - not primarily because of the volume, but the achieved sounds and colours. So to me it is really important how a speaker handles clean tones. And that's where I liked the cream the least. That doesn't mean I consider it a bad speaker per se - just not for my applications.

I'm not much for the 90 watt. I'm not sure you can go above 65 watts on a single speaker and still get a nice round tone. Those 100/150watters might be okay for metal ... i love the amps in the video.

Thanks Johan! I have all of these same speakers (lucky me..). Nice to hear a side by side comparison! I have the new Alnico Cream in an old MusicMan RD100 combo! Sounds so much better than the EV that came with it. I have the T731 in my Marshall 1974x! The T1088’s came in my 1964 Vox AC30 that I got back in the mid-90’s. Maybe you could do a side by side of the cream Alnico to the Fane cream Alnico..?

It has to be a 1969 creamback sock, definitely thicker than the socks of the following era's. However is you find the cream with the blue strip anywhere from 62 to 65 you'll find a silky texture unmatched, but they are rare. Stock nike 2000 + are way to harsh and spikey "swap them out"

Close call. From the alnicos i really liked the reconed 1967, closely followed by the other 1967, then the blue and i liked the creamback the least. Something missing there. The ceramic Greenback was spot on target for rocknroll. I mean, it is just sooo 'present' with those punchy mids..almost the opposite of the creamback..

Great Comparation. To be honest I am not great fan of the Alnico Cream and especially not a fan of the Alnico Ruby. Sure they can be solution for some amps that are to ice picky but these are not my cup of tea. Funny how much it means where do you listen to this video. I have started in my car and it has nice stereo with subwoofer and all. Reconned Alnico Silver, Silverback/ Silverdog Sounded weaker and worse in car. Now I have listened it twice on my main PC with great sound card and Studio monitors and that reconned Alnico Silver sounds great to me. 444 cone was lover resonant Frequency and is bit heavier right? Does not matter sounds great to me. So for my taste old T731 is best Celestion speaker ever. Here it is in the top to. Though it shares places with two old Alnico Silvers. Greenback is emotional thing I love but I do not think about it in comparation with Alnico speakers. Alnico Blue, Bluedog. Britishdog or how ever you want to call it is an epic speaker and it is right there with Silver backs. Even modern versions once broken in sounds awesome to me. beginning

The AlNiCo Cream is the best Celestion ever. The big criticism I have of this video is that the Cream is a 90 W driver, designed to be used in much more powerful amps than the ones being used here. A 30 W AC30 is not going to show the Cream at its best, when compared to a 15 W vintage G12.
@MatteoTorgy
@MatteoTorgy Жыл бұрын
A 5-watt amp is as capable of wringing the intended tone (or voice) out of a 90-watt speaker as a 15-watt amp is capable of wringing intended tone (voice) out of a 15-watt speaker. 15-watt speakers aren’t necessarily designed for 15-watt amps. In terms of a speaker’s voice, driving it as close as possible to its power rating doesn’t necessarily mean driving it to its fullest potential in terms of tone/voice. As examples, the sweetest tones I’ve heard lately have been a Swart 5-watt head into a Celestion Cream (rated to handle 90 watts) and a Magnatone Super Fifteen combo lined out into an 80s EV12L (rated for 200 watts).

I like the silver Alnico speakers best. Alnico cream rolls off too many highs
@coldsteelprogressive
@coldsteelprogressive 2 жыл бұрын
The situation may actually be the opposite. The new Alnico cream is not at all lacking in highs. It's Johan's setup that is producing that comparative imbalance because his sound is tailored for the older speakers. What the new Cream Alnico offers is vastly improved articulation of lows, mids and highs! You may need to apply light EQ adjustments to get the very best response from them across the desired ranges. But if you've done that, then quite possibly no other speaker anywhere can give the same tone quality.
@voxpathfinder15r
@voxpathfinder15r 2 жыл бұрын
@@coldsteelprogressive well in the video it has appreciably less/fewer highs compared to the other speakers. And loudspeaker engineering 101 tells me in order to get a higher wattage rating - you need a larger diameter voice coil former along with a heavier voice coil former material for improved heat shedding. The added weight can affect efficiency & resonance peak. But the larger diameter voice coil rolls off more high end. You can’t get around those physics.
