What is your opinion on using thiram to prevent damping off in seed starting?

Hi Ashley, I personally feel like I've had good results with cinnamon but you made a good point that its active compounds (cinnamaldehyde and eugenol) will lose their efficacy over time. I believe that ground cinnamon will start to lose its potency faster than whole cinnamon sticks due to its greater surface area and exposure to air. I would suggest storing your cinnamon in a cool, dark, and dry place like in an airtight container.

In my second year of gardening I invested in a seed starting setup with lights, the only place for it was a small room in the basement. Fungus became a problem, and I did try dollar store cinnamon. It worked ok. In the third year I bought a cheap pedestal fan that oscillates. It works a lot better than the cinnamon, but the room doesnt smell as nice :).

@@vin8523 Since I bought the fan I havent used cinnamon for seed starting. I have a bottle of it in the seed starting room left over from year two, that was two years ago. The fan alone solved all the fungus issues the last two years.

Thanks for being on KZbin. I’m new to plants and I’m trying to navigate real facts and information. I’m a science enthusiast or whatever. I try to look at everything I do I a scientific way. So that being said knowing there is a real scientist on KZbin talking about this stuff is what I needed! I need real facts. I’ve tried to locate textbooks. Lol at this point I might just go to school just to learn about this stuff becuase I love learning

That was a good one! I gave up on cinnamon a few years ago, a fan seems to make all the difference and maybe a heat mat to get the warm loving seeds germinated. I have the same light stand as you, I have T5’s in there now but I’m thinking about using those LED replacement tubes, do you use LED or T5’s? Klaus

I find fungus hasn’t been such a big deal for me here in southern Alberta.🤔 it’s so dry in my seed starting area that even with a fan on lowest setting,my seed trays dry out really fast. Actually,I wouldn’t dare go a day without watering when I have the fan on. I have noticed though, that not all seed starting mix is created equal! I have experienced green slime in the past, but was never sure what the cause was. The fan seems to prevent a lot of problems though.

Made my first successful batch of lactobacillus. Would using the lactobacillus aid in fungal problems? I have fans running with the lights, I get some algae but I am not concerned. A video of interest to me from your perspective would be applications of lactobacillus, in the grow room and out in the garden. As always, enjoy Your videos! Stay Well!!! Will be posting my comparison video of peat v leaf mold seed starter today, might be of interest. Would have posted yesterday but we got a foot of snow I had to move around.

No. Lactic acid bacteria do not aid in fungal problems. You could try using Trichoderma sp., and Bacillus subtilis. Trichoderma are opportunistic avirulent plant symbionts. They are special in a way that they mycoparasitise other fungi. They are evil to mushroom growers, but heaven-sent to the general gardeners. Bacillus subtilis is a well-known slime-producing bacterium. Its biofilm coats roots. Fancy word for it is exopolymeric substances. The said biofilm is rather safe as it is made from perfectly safe sugars. Natto! Natto is made with Bacillus subtilis! Trichoderma and Bacillus subtilis work together in an unholy way. 'How', I hear you say. Some bacteria that cannot swim, are observed to ride along some fungal hyphae as the fungus/fungi grow. Some bacteria that can swim, will swim along a film of water that fungal hypha secretes. What all that rubbish means plant roots could be effectively protected even deep down the ground/soil. The hard work is, sort of, done for you in an automated fashion. How deep down? I do not know. According to scientific literature, as far down as one metre was observed. It depends on how much sugars are exuded by a particular plant's roots. This is the reason why commercial companies encourage people to reinoculate every six months. Unless soil/growth medium is sterile, reinoculation is not really necessary. Companies say that only for profit. Those duo work to dominate substrate, and to exhaust nutrients before other microbes do. And yes, those two will compete with each other. Nature is naturally cruel. Why are they normally in pair? Here is another unholy fact: - Fungi generally 'hate' high moisture condition. - Bacteria generally 'love' high moisture condition. Thus, plants could still be protected, if they are protected, in/at different moisture levels.

Hey Ashley, thanks for the video; what about using cinnamon as a rooting hormorne? Have you heard of using wood vinegar for pest and fertilization on plants, seems all types of plants benefit, tropicals as well as vegetable and fruiting crops. I have been gardening for 30 plus years and have not heard of this. It is produced in the process of making bio char. Thanks

It works for me, gives me more roots vs not using it, Though it does not speed up the process. One thing is for certain. It does not hurt. I only use fresh, just opened powder from a sealed container. So do all your cuttlings for the season in one go. Then enjoy the cinnamon for what it's mean't for. Win, win 👍

I'm interested in trying cinnamon, my plants are very healthy, and it's kind of a therapeutic thing for me right now. I'm just wondering since it is a antibacterial and antifungal will this kill the good bacteria and good fungi in your soil? I'm really trying to build up healthy soil with good bacteria and fungi and other things that my natural fertilizer has in them that I don't know much about. Thanks.

Depends on if it’s real quality cinnamon that isn’t old, Ceylon and Sri Lankan. Depends also on the concentration you gotta cake it on or get a good coating directly on the cutting.

My Mom unsuccessfully used cinnamon. I think she was so paranoid about damping off that she underwatered her seedlings. I don't know if fungus was even the problem. I don't think I have fungus problems, but I do get some brutal algae growth even on top of pure vermiculite. I hope the green algae doesn't hurt anything.

My theory on cinnamon powder has been that it appears “helpful” because it’s so hydrophobic that moisture doesn’t seem to sit on the soil surface, thereby reducing algae/mold/fungus/bacteria from showing on the soil surface and people feel better seeing a “clean” surface, even if the problem issues are happening below anyway 😅 but that’s just always been my suspicion! Would you add cinnamon oil to the water or how would you use it effectively?
