45:45 So true. My girlfriend really dislikes ambiguity in shows. She wants a definitive answer. Even when ambiguity of a character’s motive or how they arrived to a place is rather irrelevant, because either answer still has the same result. For example if Paul believes he is a messiah or if Paul just wants revenge, or maybe a combination of both… does it really matter? The results end up the same. That type of ambiguity is “safe” in my opinion and shouldn’t lead an audience to feel confused or unsatisfied. It should inspire discussion and good natured debate.

You can only hope. So many subtle details that Villanueve uses to paint 🎨 this world in. And so many overused tropes that are left out that are just refreshing. Nothing feels forced based on current politics, toy sales, memes, just the most efficient way to project every angle and emotion of the screen play placed directly into your brain. Unforgettable film... or more like.... an atmosphere... You can FEEL everything this movie is trying to portray with its buildup and use of sensory manipulation... of course the soundtrack was phenomenal but the overall sound design may be the best ive ever experienced. Obviously this is a must see in IMAX... Just a masterwork at every level. Everyone involved bought in and gave of themselves for the sake of making something great

Not seen Dune 2 yet but I can't wait, sounds like everything it should be, and the ideal sort of adaptation. I don't really agree with the notion that doing justice to the source material is not the primary focus of an adaptation. I understand that certain elements from one medium won't work when adapted into another medium but I think there's a big difference between changing something for the sake of coherence and changing based on politics. Some creatives come in on this particular high horse of believing that they're improving on the source material and making decisions that the original writers _should_ have made i.e. the Rings of Power showrunner saying "we're telling the story Tolkien never did." and the showrunners of the new Avatar series blathering on about how "we changed certain things, because several aspects of the original series were iffy" just do your damn job and adapt the story, stop trying to roll your own virtues into it. When you adapt something, whether for film or TV, you should only change it for the sake of making a better film or show, not to make it more ethical, otherwise you're missing the point of the whole story.

I certainly hope so, Rob. And this may sound harsh, but I’m also grateful that this will relegate Dune 1984 to the same dustbin as Ralph Bakshi’s Lord of the Rings after Peter Jackson’s epic. As someone for whom Dune is my favorite book (along with the original 6) and foundational to who I became when I read it as a teenager and often since, it pained me greatly that the main representation of Herbert’s masterpiece in popular culture was that incomprehensible mess. I could forgive it’s campiness. But it’s unforgivable sin to me was that it 100% missed and misrepresented the fundamental thesis, themes and premise of Dune. Worse, it inverted them 100% to be the *opposite* of Herbert’s deconstruction of the white savior, anti-colonialism and (to paraphrase him): “Charismatic leaders and Messiahs should come with a warning label”.

Thanks for the great commentary Mr. Burnett! I always enjoy listening to you discussing film - and sci-fi! I agree with you about the romantic or modernistic approach Villeneuve is doing with Dune. I also see a bunch of minimalism how it’s shot and of course, the music. Zimmer loves minimalism. However, I did want to write to you about the article you were reading and the author using incorrectly what German Expressionism is. People make this mistake all the time. There is nothing of that in Villeneuve’s Dune. The author needs to read the definition of German Expressionism. I remember when I made the same mistake when I was doing my work on my treatise. My lead professor caught and and I corrected it. Thank you so much for the commentary! I love learning the history and the creation of cinema!

As I sit here now I am seriously considering going to see Dune for the second time. Mind you, I am a person who hates going to the cinema, I go to the cinema once a year, MAYBE. And regarding the Stuckmann thing the one person mentioned in the superchat: Firstly, I can't believe how much people were so upset by that. Secondly, what his video does is a WAY BIGGER indictment than just another bad review, and far more constructive, but people wanted just another bad review, it seems. This is like if a kid did something horrible at school and the principal said the whole family is dysfunctional and needs therapy, and some people are out here complaining that the kid didn't get detention again. There's like a hundred rants on this film, I don't think rant 101 would've made a difference. He did about the only constructive thing he could (as someone who has experience with making a movie and dealing with studio execs) and offered insight into how crap like this ends up being made. And as a side-note, and I know the person who sent the letter didn't say this, but I am legit disgusted how some people called him a sellout. The man LEFT HIS RELIGION UNDER PAIN OF BEING SHUNNED BY HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS because he loved cinema, the idea that this is a guy who seeks the easy way out is absurd. Somebody SERIOUSLY SUGGESTED that he didn't want to badmouth Madame Webb because he's afraid that people would bag on Shelby Oaks. In no universe would any filmgoer say 'Screw this Shelby Oaks movie, because the director said mean things about Madame Webb'. THANK YOU Robert for being a class above all the nerdrage grifters.

The new Villeneuve 'Dune' films are not for everyone. Although 'Dune' is not hard sci-fi, it is an extremely complex and intelligent work of fiction. Lynch tried to adapt it in 137 minutes, with a lot of exposition and dialogue. If you are going to see the films, you should read the book first, in order to better understand: the many effects of spice, the Bene Gesserit's plans, Paul is not a hero (or white savior), the Water of Life, how space folding works, lasgun interactions with shields, why there are no computers, religion(s), just to name a few. This is a thinking person's sci-fi and there is a lot to unpack.

I wrote this comment back in August 2022: "Dune (2021) is the greatest science fiction film of all time, being the placeholder for the future greatest sci-fi film of all time, Dune: Part 2. By the time the last greatest sci-fi film of all time would be made, Chapterhouse, The Apocalypse will already be with us, and they're going to end filming mid-production. Because, you know, end times." Behold your future, guys.

Been awhile since I've read the books, but was Paul's motivation to becoming the Messiah about taking revenge for his family? If it was just that, wouldn't he have done so before taking the Water of Life? Seems that it may be deeper than that

No. I'd say that Barbie and Oppenheimer were the kick in the pants that Hollywood needed. Dune 2 will just be added to that. They are all reminders that making money is about making GREAT movies, not a temporary and fleeting infusion of cash due to a series of mediocre movies with a cape tossed in.
