Anyone who thinks Derek has the best back, knows absolutely NOTHING about bodybuilding! And no disrespect to him (cause I absolutely admire his work ethic and he does seem like a genuine nice guy), but he will probably forever be known as one of the weakest Mr O's period! The only thing he has going, is his impressive X frame cause of how super wide he is, but that's it! Look at most previous Mr O pics after they won, and we all looked on admirably, thinking now that's a Mr O physique! We did it with Heath (before bubble gut creeped in), Rhoden, Brandon (even with his small legs), Ramy and Choopan! This year when we saw picks of Derek after winning, we saw a bodybuilder with crazy width, but lackluster EVERYTHING else not to mention SOFT and almost none existing calves!!!! And those who think otherwise, are just fan boys who cannot separate themselves from being sycophants and think objectively! Anyways, rant over😂

One thing I haven’t heard mention of is that Derek is leaning back significantly more than the others. It’s almost comical. You could say that this is good posing, but it also makes him look significantly wider and more tapered. I generally find him to look very wide yet flat compared to the others mentioned in the video. Last are flared out wide but he lacks thickness and three-dimensionality. When put up against Coleman he still lacks the width but gets completely destroyed in thickness.

Exactly this. Derek looks flat. Especially compared to Phil Heath who has a very 3D look and lots of detail. Derek looks wide, sure, but he's also flat. No 3D look to him, and less detail. I don't see how he wins just because of width when everything else is lacking.

I think Phil and Dorian are right there with him in their respective aspects, Dorian with his granite conditioning and Phil with his incredible roundness and bubblyness, at the end of the day Ronnie would probably win the overall because he was just so huge he'd merc them both on size and freak factor, especially the side chest would display the huge difference in total mass, but I don't think his back alone is better than theirs, thicker perhaps but not better.

Yates and striated glutes, they were striated - nobody came on stage with less fat and water than Dorian - what you’re seeing is 90s bodybuilders posing with their legs close together standing tall…current bodybuilders show their back while doing a half squat and squeezing their glutes together - it’s frankly ridiculous and there’s an old school Aussie IFFB pro who refers to it as taking a dump 😂…90s guys were mass monsters but still posed in a more classical way.

No, that's literally how the pose was done. When the announcer tells you to do it, you do it. You can often find them with one leg out. I think the genetic frame it goes on is just as important factor as any other to win, realistically. The best bodybuilders usually have the biggest illusion, especially for phil who only ever weighed like 240 on stage, it was a factor for his success and having such a 3d look. Being narrow, he still is extremely genetically gifted structurally, and proportionally. Even his narrow chest and clavicle for example, is arguably his biggest weakness structurally, but also plays into the illusion of his craziest poses. hitting a hands clasped most muscular, adds to the illusion of the rest of him being so big in comparison

Of course derek wins in total width, with an awesome lower body, and world class back, but phils back is winning on every aspect.. Thickness and muscularity, deep cuts all along his shoulder blades and traps, even his sillhowette and proportions from the back are beating derek.. Usually the wider guy has a better silhouette but not here.. Derek's silhouette is a lot more waist than back.. like his lats flair only is by his shoulder blades, while phils lats flair like one giant muscle belly from top all the way to bottom and also has the smaller waist

Derek's back is very impressive but let's face facts. He's loading SEO in the Teres major/minor muscles. But esp the Teres major. Because so it's adding inches to his width. Dorians back is easily the most impressive when you take into consideration that Dorian always showed up on stage not only peeled front to back but also flat. Dorian's back in 1997 is relatively what he would show up with if he competed nowadays. highly underrated version of Yates that totally gets overshadowed by his torn tricep and distention in the midsection. I disagree Dorian didn't know how to pose his back. His posing routines weren't riveting (it was almost the same thing every year) but he actually was one of the bodybuilders that knew how to hit mandatory poses. It's part of the reason we have such fantastic back shots even with the crappy 90s quality video. *_He held the pose well, kept STILL, and didn't lean backwards_* which HIDES lower back detail.

His upper lat flare might be the best in terms of width but I'm not sure I'd call his back the best, he doesn't have the extreme hardness of a Nick Walker (In the back itself mind you, lower half is impressively hard), he doesn't have the superior cuts and detail of a Michal Krizo and he doesn't have the impressive thickness of a Samson Dauda or Hadi Choopan, with those lower lats hanging of like massive slabs of meat. He is very very good, of that there is no doubt, but I'm hard pressed to call him the best, even of the current top 10. I also don't like the concave shape of the flare itself as opposed to the more straight or convex shape we generally see from just about anyones elses lat spread, makes it look there's an empty space just covered with skin between upper lats and lower lats where a good deal of meat should be. I'm probably being nitpicky as hell but hey, he's the mr.Olympia so I guess it's his turn.

Ronnie has almost Sampsons height and frame with thickness at or above Hadi. Standing next to Derek, Derek would look like the 202 competitor that he is. 5'5 235 standing bow legged vs a 5'11 300lb guy standing straight up. Then the 300lb guy has more detail to boot lol. the quality is just very different with a lot of these guys (worse). Krizo at least comes in with dry, hard, shapely muscle. Gotta give him that.

Imo Derek can surpass Phil in the back department. He is definitely wider and also it feels like he can look way better with better oil. Ronnie though is a different monster

Its a weird thing with Lunsford, he gets really shredded from the back comoared to his soft front and usually that's the really difficult part about conditioning, not the conditioning from the front but from the back. He has a great back, no doubt, but he must be penalized from the front thanks to those lumps in the lats...

@@danielhicks4826 Well, Ramy and Chopan were doing it before Lunsford at the open level and they got rewarded three years in a row, so for whatever reason Lunsford is doing i nowt, to improve weaker parts, to look bigger or who knows, I think the real problem is the judges not punishing it...the minute the judges started punishing the bubble gut, dudes began to check it and keep it under control. I mean, you even got Cbum, the supposedly aesthetic representation of this era, with very suspicious looking shoulders and lumps on his quads, and he still gets rewarded...

😂all these big guys would still lose to Dorian, nobody has the combination of size with conditioning with symmetry. Only part I see Dorian losing are quads and hamstrings, but then he brings those monster calfs nobody has. I see so many muscle fibers in the back.
