@Ben-zr4ho

There are similar studies with smokers being more healthy than non smokers and fat people being healthy than non fat people. Statisticians call it "the smoking paradox" and "the obesity paradox." Why paradox? Because they know it's bs. You just gave a good reason, right out of the book "How Statistics Lie," that would explain why that is. Honestly though? Nowadays especially? I don't think there are all these subtle reasons why statistics are misrepresented. They just outright lie. Here's one I just found out about. The US' mortality rates for mothers giving birth don't look as good as they should. Turns out the CDC is now counting suicides of the mother up to like 3 years after birth. Other countries obviously don't count a mothers suicide due to post partum depression or whatever as a death from childbirth. Or how during COVID all of a sudden supposedly like 1/4 of as many people were dying from pneumonia. Then they just combined influenza, pneumonia, and COVID into one criteria. Even retroactively. It's crazy look at the CDC deaths from 2018, before COVID, they have thousands of deaths from, "influenza, pneumonia, and/or COVID 19" listed even though COVID 19 didn't even exist yet. It's a trip.
@xiongly435

yeah, it's a psychological effect: if you affirmed something and you're started to be questioned or put in doubt, you will on an impulse try to defend your idea or attack the doubters(whatever works first to shut them up), whether you're objectively right or not. Just because you said it, it is "true" in your head no matter what. It takes some mental discipline to publicly recognize you made a wrong affirmation and backtrack, and deal with looking/feeling like an idiot, but acknowledging the objective truth

imagen this.. you already drink only diet soda while you eat tons of snacks and other high caloric food with insane amount of bad carbs and bad fats and bad proteins in it. Oh and your stomach expande due to all of this in a nice combination so you dont feel full anymore.. so you eat even more without thinking.. and expanding the stomach more. Thus you need more food and "fuel" to feel full. This is why people who drink diet sodas become fatter in time. There is no damn way out of this no matter what the roided youtubers claim. Eat good nutrition rich food. That is the literal only way and we all know it. Yes, ALL SODAS WILL MAKE YOU FAT IN SOME WAY SOONER OR LATER. Water wont. Plenty of other liquids wont either tbh cuz they have actual nutrition in them.. zero calories means zero energy and zero nutrition of value. So you are esentially drinking air.

The stretch of the stomach and delayed feeling of fullness are definitely real and evidence based, but even according to you that’s because of all the snacks and excess eating being done. Imagine this. Say this person who’s drinking diet soda, eating bunches of snacks and low quality nutrition in excess begins to switch to good quality food, moderate calorie intake, and beneficial amounts of essential minerals, vitamins, etc. but continues to drink diet soda… Would you say that this person would lose weight? I actually doubt diet soda really helps anyone lose weight. My consistent observation has been that diet soda is something that fat, lazy, gluttonous people drink as a kind of token weight loss measure that doesn't involve actual dieting or exercise. Further, I think anyone who is obese will have sugar/carb cravings that diet soda does not satisfy, and so will simply add back those calories elsewhere. This is one area I disagree with the video on - a sweet tooth is also about your body's desire for sugar. So, on balance, I'd say diet drinks are a waste of time, and only exist so that manufacturers can keep making money when people turn away from their regular products.

We worked it out, he does like 3600 kcal a day in food 7 days a week, burns 4000 5x a week and lazes around the other two days (like 2700 kcal). Turns out that the math works out just fine.

Something to consider is if there’s caffeine in the soda. Caffeine can cause blood sugar to increase(release of stored sugars). Maybe some people confuse that? Not sure if there’s enough caffeine in a single can to really increase blood sugar but still. Also, blood sugar doesn’t always correlate with insulin levels. Sometimes blood sugar is stable BECAUSE insulin spiked and it doing its job to transport the glucose. All of that aside I think you’re right. I don’t think it has any effect on insulin, because I’ve managed to increase my insulin sensitivity GREATLY while still consuming diet soda.

„There is increasing evidence suggesting that artificial sweeteners in diet drinks can alter the gut microbiome, which is the composition of bacteria in the gut. Some studies have shown that these changes could have negative health impacts, including potential weight gain and impaired glucose tolerance, which could increase the risk of diabetes. These changes in the microbiome might be caused by the altered activity and composition of gut bacteria, which in turn can affect metabolism and nutrient absorption. However, research in this area is still relatively new, and more studies are needed to fully understand the exact mechanisms and long-term effects.“

No, it's perfectly natural. You have high insulin, low blood sugar, thus you crave sweet stuff. Now you drink diet soda, which increases your insulin even higher and lowers your blood sugar even more, so now you crave sweet stuff even harder. Next time you have a craving for something sweet, eat something fatty instead. Like bacon. It will lower your insulin and normalize your blood sugar without making you hungry for more sweet stuff again soon after. Over time, your body stops craving sweets.

My genuine concern with diet soda has always been about incorporating it into a calorie controlled diet (I.E. for bodybuilding). Because as a trained molecular biologist, I know that these sugar alternatives may have binding affinity with relevant cell receptors such as for insulin signaling. And I know insulin signaling stimulates adipogenesis (and myogenesis obviously). So it seems possible that sugar alternatives may lead to fat being directed into adipocytes which wouldn’t otherwise be as preferred if I say, drank water instead. So I’m BEGGING on my hands and knees Dr Mike. Do you know if any of these studies controlled for the factors of macronutrient splits and total caloric intake between groups??

Whenever I drank a diet coke I got a migraine within 5 minutes (I could set a timer on it...happend 10 out of 10 times). It is not the only trigger I had, but staying away from it reduced my migraines from 1-2 per week to 1 a month. After almost a year I thought I'd give it another try, drank a diet coke and within 5 minutes I got the migraine 😀. Haven't tried it again for the past 20 years. Here's what I've been told before and have assumed to be true because it seems logically sound about diet soda. Drinking diet soda or just drinking any low calorie beverage when you feel thirsty makes your body respond to the sweetness and "boot up the ol' food digestion system" and when you after an hour or so doesn't get the energy it expected from that sweetness, you become hungry. And that hunger translates to you going to grab in-between meals, grabbing a sandwich an hour before dinner, grabbing a bag of chips just before you head to bed and so on. So its not a "sweet things makes you want more sweetness" but more of a "sweet things that don't actually have calories makes you hungry and so you are more likely to respond to your percieved hunger by overeating". In other words, artificial sweeteners is stimulating your appetite, making you overeat, thus indirectly making you fat. I think the issue is that people are comparing diet soda to non-diet soda, for which I absolutely agree with Mike here that diet soda is CLEARLY a better choice than regular soda. But what you really should be comparing is diet soda vs beverages that aren't sweet to begin with like unsweetened tea or water. Learning to appriciate these unsweetened drinks is much preferred to drinking diet soda since you wont be stimulates to overeat (if you are already overweight). On the flipside if you needed to gain weight but struggle with appetite, maybe diet soda could be just the thing for you. Small disclaimer, I have not properly researched any of this from a scientific standpoint but a quick google search did bring me to an article (AMA Netw Open. 2021;4(9):e2126313. doi:10.1001/jamanetworkopen.2021.26313) where this seems to be the case for women and people who are obese. But I'm sure someone who's deeper in this field of study like the big strong Dr. Mike himself is would be a much better interpreter of the significance of this study.

So while they may not gain weight from drinking diet soda, the brain will try and force them to satiate this sweet craving and more often than not they will indulge in something else which DOES cause weight gain like ice cream or pie or cake or some other form of sugary food. So while it is indirect, it does HELP to cause cravings that DO cause weight gain if not properly controlled. You wanted a good answer to why they don't just drink more diet soda? That's it...diet soda does NOT satiate that craving like sugar does. Additionally, new reaarch shows that it can negatively alter the gut microbiome and resuce the diversity of bacteria . The gut microbiome has been found to be a very key componwnt to maintaining a healthy weight and preventing metabolic disorders due to the types of bacteria in it..."good bacteria" release anti-inflammatory compounds and help thr body stay metabolically healthy and able to both utilize and burn fat properly while "bad" bacteria hinder your metabolic health due to releasing compounds that cause inflammation, reduce insulin sensitivity and alter the body's ability to utilize fat properly
