Did you all notice what E.T. was saying as he went towards the costumed kid that he thought was Yoda? He was saying one of the only words he knows ,"home, home". He probably knew Yodas species as a good honorable people that would help him, even though he's only a child of his people, he knew the rep. of Yodas people.

The closest thing in Star Wars to Earth is Kesh, an isolated planet subjected to a perpetual Bronze Age inhabited for thousands of years only by the Keshiri species (purple-skinned humans who live by fishing and riding uvaks) and a group of Sith humans who crash-landed on said planet during the Great Hyperspace War. Something quite remarkable about this society is that, when the descendants of the Sith found a holographic projection of the Sith Pureblood Naga Sadow, many were horrified by the "monstrous" appearance of that man, not being aware until that moment that there were more anthropomorphic and civilized species in the universe besides humans and the Keshiri. I think that's a pretty accurate description of how the people of our world would react if they encounter an alien for the first time.
