• Fasting Pitfall 1: Fasting too much when you're already quite lean • Fasting Pitfall 2: Not moving or getting any exercise • Fasting Pitfall 3: Bingeing carbs before • Fasting Pitfall 4: Not breaking fast with enough protein or calories • Fasting Pitfall 5: No salt or electrolytes My summary: • If you're reasonably lean don't fast that often or for too long. I.e. for most reasonably healthy people probably no more than 10 days at a time. • Make sure to move and get exercise because it stimulates muscle protein synthesis and will drastically reduce muscle lost (could actually maintain everything). Being sedentary and fasting is a recipe to lose lots of muscle • Be smart ahead of your fast by shifting to fewer carbohydrates so your glycogen stores aren't as high and you can enter ketosis sooner since that's the goal (fat burning, muscle sparing). • When you end your fast make sure to get enough protein and calories so you can rebuild/gain muscle due to the higher growth hormone and other factors that make you primed to regain/grow. • During fasting have enough salt/electrolytes to stay healthy

So ive been fasting for years now and it has been amazing. My best experience with it was about 2 years ago. I had just got injured and had to get surgery. During this time i became a very sedentary person and gained about 30lbs in 8 months. So i decided to do a water fast of 30 days. I was doing a light workout routine and that was it. I lasted 26 days, once my hunger was unconfortable i decided to break. I went from 236 lbs to 187 the day that i decided to cut it out. You gain back around 10lbs once you start eating again. So in 26 days i lost almost 40 lbs, kept the weight off, had no pain in my back or feet, i play tennis and those are common pain areas, and once i stopped i started going to the gym and in just a few weeks i was in the best shape of my life. My digestive system is working amazingly and i didnt crave candy and sweet things. Fasting for me is a cure. But moving is a really important part of it.

Since this comment is at the top, I thought that sharing some of my experience in this thread may help other people. As someone who has been experimenting with IF Keto and many more things over the years, I think that my body works best on low carb and 2 meals a day in 5-6 h window. I started with keto and IF because I had stomach issues that the doctors couldn't resolve. Keto, IF plus betaine hydrochloride, apple cider vinegar and digestive enzymes was the only thing that helped me. Once my digestion improved, everything felt better - my skin cleared, my depression improved and my anxiety lowered significantly. I got to the point of OMAD and I did that for a year which I felt was the right approach at that time. I lost muscle, since it was hard to eat enough protein. Then I got back to 2 meals in 3-4 hours, and then to 5-6 h. The last year and a half I have been gradually increasing my carbs and experimenting with fueling around workouts to see how my performance will be... I was surprised and disappointed at the same time. Surprised that a little more carbs did not kick me out of ketosis (I'm very active) and disappointed because more carbs make me feel terrible. I also tried to stop the fasting and eat pre-workout which led to terrible performances. As soon as I stopped eating around my workouts all felt great again. Basically, I got back to IF + low carb with a bit more protein and carbs, but still pretty much low carb. That is what makes me feel great. Hopefully, that will help you in your journey. Wish you luck!

@ROFLance3 ай бұрын
I'm surprised you didn't mention that Human Growth Hormone (HGH) production starts to increase significantly during fasting, typically after around 16 hours without food. 16-24 hours of fasting: HGH levels start to increase as the body shifts energy sources. This rise in HGH helps preserve muscle tissue and supports fat burning for energy. 24-48 hours: HGH levels can increase up to five-fold. This period is when the body really leans into fat-burning (ketosis) and tissue repair, thanks in part to HGH. 48 hours and beyond: HGH levels may continue to rise, peaking around this time before they eventually stabilize. By this point, HGH production can be up to 300%-500% higher than usual. Human Growth Hormone (HGH) plays a significant role in preventing muscle loss and promoting muscle growth through several mechanisms: Stimulating Protein Synthesis: HGH enhances the process of protein synthesis in muscle cells, promoting the growth and repair of muscle tissue. This means that when you exercise or face muscle damage, HGH helps to rebuild and strengthen the muscles. Inhibiting Muscle Breakdown: HGH has anti-catabolic effects, meaning it helps prevent the breakdown of muscle tissue. It does this by increasing levels of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), which supports muscle maintenance and growth. Enhancing Recovery: HGH aids in recovery after exercise by promoting the regeneration of muscle cells. This is crucial during periods of fasting or caloric restriction, as it helps preserve lean muscle mass when the body might otherwise break it down for energy. Increasing Fat Utilization: HGH promotes the mobilization of fat stores for energy, sparing muscle tissue. When the body uses fat as its primary energy source, it reduces the need to break down muscle for fuel. Improving Metabolism: HGH boosts metabolic processes, which can enhance overall energy availability and efficiency. A higher metabolism helps the body maintain its muscle mass even when in a caloric deficit. Influencing Muscle Cell Growth: HGH directly influences satellite cells (precursor cells that contribute to muscle growth) to proliferate and differentiate into muscle cells, further supporting muscle growth and repair. Together, these mechanisms make HGH a critical hormone for preserving muscle mass, especially during periods of fasting, dieting, or intense exercise, where muscle loss can be a concern.

I recommend following Dr. Mindy Pelz! She specializes in fasting for women. :) It is true that women need to fast differently. For example, it is not recommended to fast a week before period. At that time estrogen is being produced from carbs and fasting can disrupt it.

@@diskoelfas She's a great resource for sure, but I like his style of videos much more so if they could either collaborate or if he could use her knowledge as a starting point that would be fantastic I think the issue is that there isn't much specific research on women and fasting, especially not one that separates women with a natural hormonal cycle vs altered. However, there is definitely research done on separate issues that can be pieced together, like "how does insulin work?" + "how do hormones affect insulin tolerance?" = when can a woman tolerate more carbs

I'm in the fasting AND in the BBuilding (natural, amateur) culture since 2014. I'm 44 yo. I've never had this much muscle mass with this little bodyfat in my entire life. Still i do 'some' bulk-and-cut phases during the year, still fasting during the cuts. And i mean prolonged fast, not the 16/8 IF protocols. I do Omad every day of the year since 2014, that's not a 'fast', it's time restricted eating. I'm an ex obese person, with a genetic advantage to put on muscle mass (after a fast, WITH the muscle memory you are talking about). Of course i train for hypertrophy, my strenght levels ARE NOT competitive at all. As for the streght aspect i'm an average, or belove average lifter. But some muscular districts are above the average for what concerns the hypertrophy aspects (arms, abdomen, legs and calves are my strong points genetically speaking. My chest is not my best muscle). If you train for muscle mass fasting IS a valid tool. I've no doubt, i'm the living proof of that. If you train for strenght performance you can have 'some' disadvantages in your progressions in the long run, if you use prolonged fasting as a weight loss tool. That's my own 2 cents.

Muscle memory is the muscle's ability to remember how to perform a movement and efficiently with more practice - motor unit recruitment, basically. You are referring to the satellite cells that linger in the case of building muscle then losing it. It becomes easier to rebuild that lost muscle because satellite cells remain in the area and enable a faster muscle growth process than the first time you built muscle in that area.

This video is really well researched. I just want to emphasize how important it is to get your electrolytes during a fast. Electrolytes help your nervous system work properly and greatly reduce the risks of a long fast. LMNT is a great option, but if it's too expensive, you can ask ChatGPT for a DIY recipe that mimics LMNT for just 2-3 cents per drink (compared to $1.50-$2.00). It takes a little effort to make, though. You can also ask ChatGPT how to add your favorite flavors to your DIY mix (I love LMNT’s Citrus Salt and Watermelon Salt flavors, but I don't use any sugar in my DIY mix). Also, you'll find it much easier to handle hunger if you get your body into ketosis before the fast, as mentioned in the video.

Yes. Your thyroid actually lowers its t3 and energy production in order to save your muscles and internal organs from being shredded by cortisol. That's not saying you can't build muscle in the short term. But your body will ultimately reach a point where it just can't pump out anymore cortisol and lead to adrenal fatigue. Tons and tons of people stop low or no carb diets because of this

Yeah, the study your referring to shows that t3 and t4 thyroid hormones return to normal after about a week. I call bull on your statement.

But Angus Barbieri "although he occasionally consumed small amounts of milk and/or sugar with the beverages," it also says in wikipedia that he consumed "vitamins, electrolytes, an unspecified amount of yeast", so his fast apparently was different than the standard dry or water fasts.
@rekamud66357 ай бұрын
I suppose the yeast was there for prolonging the fast beyond reasonability and for something in the doctors books from 50 years ago under which he was taken care of. But the electrolytes should do in every fast, I mean you can take vitamin pills (which funny enough are minerals just like electrolytes) 100mg pills aint gonna break nobodies fasting 4 real.

Ive been intermitting fasting for about two years now, having only one meal per day. I have done the minimum research on the dangers of fasting, but any more then that, i have been listening on what my body wants. After i work out i drink water and add more salt to my dinner, when i crave milk, i get it for dinner, and so on and so on. As long as i get what i want for dinner, and avoid quick carbs, i keep in shape a lot easier. I decided to start on this diet not for any health benefits, but because i wanted to not be fat anymore, and in that i say i did really well, i went from 115kg down to now 75kg, and gained a lot of muscle as well.

@sunflash97 ай бұрын
I did low carb keto and intermittent fasting for almost 2 years by now. And health have greatly improved, and my injury is gone. And I can do fasting 3 days without food, with just some water, vitamine and electrolytes, and maintain energy level without feeling tired or feel very hungry. Normally is 18 - 30 hours between meal, don't snack in the everning and no breakfast. I gain couple kilos muscle and lose quite a bit fat, my weight is pretty stable, my fat procent can go up and down a bit, around 10-12%. So I don't feel fasting impact muscle mass negative, but it can be hard to gain large muscle in short amount of time with fasting.

I'm overweight and have fasted for weeks. I wish I'd stuck it out for months as I always intended - and needed. It wasn't hunger that got me to break the fast, it was cravings for flavours. I started having bizarre food related dreams and the smell of food was torture. I was always told to avoid protein when refeeding and stick to bone broth then simple, easy to digest carbs. Which is correct?
@panagiotisapostolidis64247 ай бұрын
Instead, maybe try to maximize your metabolic rate and see how that goes instead of extended fasts. Ive found it works much better long term.
@SonnyDarvish7 ай бұрын
Think about nature. If you're out in the wild and it snows for a couple of weeks, what food can you find during or after the snow? fruits? no. Bone broth? unlikely without the meat. It's fine to eat protein and I always break my fasts with either salmon + kimchi or a steak + saurkraut. Avoid too much fiber and carbs initially as you build your gut microbiome that said bye bye after only a few days of fasting.
@rekamud66357 ай бұрын

Great video. The post fast information was new and interesting and makes a lot of sense. I actually over fasted last year for autophagy (not fat loss as I'm shredded)...and loss too much weight / muscle and my body felt weaker and unhealthy. This explains why. I stopped extended fasting and feel much better and stronger. Ready to do another 72 hr fast soon though. Last comment is that dry fasting is easier because then you are not peeing out your electrolytes. When water fasting, I was basically only making myself drink to get electrolytes in. No need if you aren't losing as much when dry fasting.

I have a question since I`m a bit confused by it. When he talks about fasting for 3, 5, 10 days or whatever, he basically means eating NO food at all, right? Or small amounts of food during that time? And the advice for someone trying to fast would be to eat as little carbs and stuff before the fast as possible, basically just meat and protein heavy stuff, to enter the ketosis sooner which wont make you feel as hungry and preserve muscles. And the other advice is to eat lots of protein and carbs after the fast, so that you body will be safe. And the last being to do light sports/exercise like walks, small runs and stuff but nothing too big, right?
@XeenimChoorch-nx8wx7 ай бұрын

Awesome video! Another potential benefit of fasting worth exploring is its impact on sleep quality and recovery. It would be highly individualized but I bet some people may have so much visceral fat it may impact respiratory function By reducing visceral fat around internal organs, fasting can improve respiratory function, which might lead to fewer sleep disruptions like respiratory-related arousals. Better sleep supports muscle growth, repair, and overall recovery-just another reason fasting could be a game-changer!

I never lost much muscle fasting. In 2019 I did 10, 7, 5, 5, 3, 3, 3 day fasts (not in that order). I lifted weights throughout (3 days/week). I was pretty dang lean after the 10 day fast, and never noticed any strength loss except perhaps at the very end of 10 days. Btw, I drank my typical 2 light beers each day... so not a perfect fast.
