None of that's true. There was a set played next to a huge crowd that was all cheering for one player. His girlfriend was sat behind him and would pat his back and cheer him on while a crowd screamed at the visiting player. After the game the visiting player (who lost) said the crowd was too distracting and that his opponent was getting backrubs and pep talks. This led the community to make fun of the visiting player by claiming the home player had a "secret weapon gf" which the larger gaming community took out of context and trampled the entire story to make fun of all Smash players. The problem of crowds effecting players was forgotten due to the funni meme and a community that's always under attack took another hit. Internet working as intended.

Short answer: Absolutely. All relationships you invest in daily are time consuming. Thats a losing recipe, competitively, regardless. Keep in mind the winners don't have sex before preparing for big competitions.
