In many of my videos, I demonstrate how hydrogen peroxide can effectively tackle set-in carpet stains. One of the most common questions I receive is whether it's safe to use hydrogen peroxide on coloured carpets. In this video, I'll provide answers by conducting tests with varying strengths of hydrogen peroxide to determine its bleaching effects on carpet fibers.
Please note that while this video aims to address this common query, it is not intended as a comprehensive instructional guide. For step-by-step instructions on removing almost any carpet spot or stain in just two simple steps, be sure to watch my dedicated tutorial here: • How to Remove Any Carp... .

An important item to address in relation to this: Please DO NOT, under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, try to use chlorine bleach in place of peroxide in the peroxide-and-ammonia technique shown here. While this video is certainly not instructing anyone to do this, there is also no caution against it. While it's safe to use ammonia with hydrogen peroxide as shown, mixing it with chlorine bleach resultes in chloramine gas, which is a toxic and potent irritant that can cause respiratory distress or worse, especially in those with pre-existing conditions.

@@TheStainGuide You did make it pretty clear that chlorine bleach is bad at this for a number of reasons (including how "good" it is at indescriminately destroying pigments), so the risk is low. You just never know when someone is going to apply a wholly inappropriate "more/stronger is better" approach to anything.

I've just dropped a tin of wood stain on my carpet, is it worth trying to remove the stain using your methods or shall I just throw in the towel and take a trip to the carpet store?

I've been using hydrogen peroxide for a while now for a ton of cleaning things...my question is...what does the ammonia do? I do not use ammonia in my home...would the stain still come out without the ammonia???

My man! If you wanted to brighten a yellowing (from use/wear), originally, light cream-colored sofa, could you just spray the ^% hydrogen peroxide directly onto the sofa?? (Of course, starting with an inconspicuous part of the couch)

What does the ammonia do when sprayed with hydrogen peroxide?
@TheStainGuide
@TheStainGuide 4 ай бұрын
@JonathanIsrael708 This hydrogen peroxide stain removal reaction is from a branch of chemistry called electrochemistry. Essentially what's happening is the hydrogen peroxide breaks down from hydrogen peroxide to oxygen and water. as the hydrogen peroxide breaks down, it needs to steal an electron from another molecule or compound in it's vicinity. It will steal an electron from whichever molecule or compound is easy to steal from. Many organic pigments don't want to give up their electrons very easily so we can add ammonia to accelerate the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. Basically, by adding ammonia, you are speeding up the rate of reaction, or the electrical current of the reaction, and this increases the probability that the hydrogen peroxide decomposition will steal an electron from the molecule that is causing the stain in the carpet.

Will the 6% hydrogen peroxide and ammonia trick work on set in cola stains that have appeared after having the carpet professionally cleaned?
@TheStainGuide
@TheStainGuide 3 ай бұрын
It will work on a set in cola stain. Have you tried using a spot removal method first though? It is always best to start with spot removal and then move onto stain removal next.

After watching this video, I used some 3% hydrogen peroxide over a coffee stain on white speckled carpeting. The stain came out, but it also lightened the speckles and the difference is noticeable. So the moral to the story is don't believe everything you see on the internet.

Peroxide has to be kept in a light-blocking bottle or it will become inneffective.

Yes, hydrogen peroxide best stored in a dark container or a dark cabinet. Overtime hydrogen peroxide breaks down into oxygen and water. Heat and UV light will speed up the rate of reaction.

I’d really like to see a photo of your carpet, if you still have the carpet. If you would be willing to share more about what happened, my email is stainguide@gmail.com Hydrogen peroxide is very unlikely to harm carpet. If it does, it’s usually because it was used on carpet in direct sunlight. Other problems could result from wicking, i.e., whatever contaminants are deep in the carpet resurface as the carpet dries. Wicking happens as a result of your carpet getting wet though, not from using hydrogen peroxide. I’d love to hear more so I can try to help you if you are interested. Take care.😊

I followed your video with peroxide and stained my rug much worse than the couple of coffee dots I was in ttying to get out. My off white colored rug turned yellow where I did the peroxide treatment.

@DSE75 There are a few possible explanations for this. The most likely one is that there are still some coffee pigments (melanoidin pigments) in the carpet. Can you answer a few questions for me, and I'll try to help you out. 1) First, can you send me an email with a photo of the stain and a photo of the cleaning agents that you used? I just want to make sure that there is no issue with the products that you are using. My email: StainGuide@gmail.com. It is rare but sometimes people accidently use hair colouring instead of hydrogen peroxide. I just want to make sure something like this isn't what is causing the staining. 2) Did you do Part One and Two of the video before using the hydrogen peroxide in Part Three? and did you use a wet/dry vacuum? Step one can be tricky and can sometimes cause the stain to spread out and become bigger, especially if you don't use a wet/dry vacuum. 3) Did you use 6% hydrogen peroxide? 6% hydrogen peroxide is recommended over 3%. 3% will likely just cause the stain to spread out over a larger area. 4) did you test the products in an inconspicuous area before using them on the stain? If so, did you notice any issues? 5) Is your carpet made out of a fine fiber such as wool or silk? 6) Did you use the hydrogen peroxide outdoors, or in direct sunlight?

@@TheStainGuideDid not use outdoors although I do have standard window light that is not excessive. Not sure if there is wool, but no silk. Started with small area of stain, but kept trying to get it out with same recipe which after third time became size of basketball. Looked each time like it worked but later dried into large consistent yellowish circle. Used Salon 40 after seeing on your video and used large wet vac, as I own a construction company. Not from this video but your coffee stain video.

@DSE75 hey there, what you are describing sounds like a wicking problem. In my coffee video, I talk about wicking in step 2. Generally with liquid spills like coffee, the stain will resurface as the carpet dries. This is because the coffee that has seeped down to the carpet backing migrates up to the carpet tufts after the carpet dries. In the coffee video you are referring to, i mentioned that step two should be repeated until the wicking has been resolved. Then if there is still a set in stain, that is when you use hydrogen peroxide. If you skip step one or step two of that video, the hydrogen peroxide isn’t going to help much and will likely cause the stain to spread out further. Furthermore, since your coffee stain disappears and then reappears after the carpet dries, this means it is likely not a set in stain and could probably be removed with step 2 alone. It’s important to note that 95% of the coffee comes out of the carpet in step one and two. Then if anything remains, we resort to using hydrogen peroxide. The sunlight doesn’t sound like an issue. I didn’t receive a photo. Feel free to send one and I can take a closer look. Good luck and with a little more time on part two of that video, I think you’ll get the stain out.

Oh noooo! Never use bleach unless it’s watered waaaaaay down, it depends on what the stain is that you’re trying to remove but usually peroxide is safer. I own a cleaning company called Partners In Grime, LLC.

Please never use bleach on carpet. Even if you think your carpet is perfectly white, it still likely has a colouring pigment in it and bleach will break that pigment down.

I loved your video, but I have used hydrogen peroxide on chairs and carpets. Thinner material like chairs will indeed bleach quickly, I literally just had it happen not even a week ago. It may not bleach carpet immediately, but it can bleach thinner material like those found in chairs and upholstery rather quickly.... 💯
