Does it Get Windy In Wyoming?

This is becoming a semi-normal weekly wind occurrence

I lived in Casper and have experienced 90 mph. It has knocked me down.

After living in SE WY for 20 years now, I always chuckle at weather & wind speeds elsewhere. In wet climates, tree roots aren’t as deep & the ground is soft, so our winds would be devastating. The biggest concern here on a windy day is to park facing into the wind, otherwise you might be in for an expensive repair on your car door.

Lots of windy places in the country. Wyoming wind has one advantage, at the altitude Laramie, Cheyenne, etc. the air is so thin that the wind has less force. I notice it right away because I am a biker and when I ride in Wyo, the air has less force at the same speed. Go down to Florida and go the same speed on a bike and the wind feels like it is trying to push you off the bike in comparrison. Just IMHO...

Very interesting! I was wondering about biking in Wyoming. Here in IL if the wind is strong and comes at me from the side when I am biking it almost pushes me over.

Got stuck in Casper a couple of years back, was going to visit with my youngest in Jackson, it was so windy they shut down the roads leading out of town.. had to scramble to find three rooms to spend the night.

I went to a shooting range west of Cheyenne today and abandoned because I couldn’t steady to aim simply because of the wind push on my body

We have a little inside building you can shoot from here in addition to the regular range. I also bought a tractor blade off a guy in Clark Wyoming who converted a shed into a man cave/shooting shack. His range went out 600 yards

Ropes or strapping over the tarp, maybe. If you can get your hands on some pallets you could put eyelets or nails in those and put the hay on them, then ropes over the tarp attached to the eyelets/nails. Considering moving out there in a yearish. Thanks for your vids. I like wind.

Its tied down to railroad ties on all four sides with half inch rope. The wind has pulled it from underneath and ripped all the groments out. I'm glad you like wind:)

I was thinking of just using the ropes though, not with grommets but criss-cross over top and threaded around or through the eyelets/nails or even the slats on the pallets, you know? Like a cradleboard?. But yeah that wind is giving you a challenge. Let us know how you keep the tarp in place in the end.

About the same numbers today here in the Nebraska panhandle. We last lived on the Sacramento Delta, I think it was worse there overall...lost sections of roofing twice in four years. Three story house there and only two story here, that might be the difference.

Don’t mean to be a downer but I live west of Cheyenne and we are having sustained 60mph winds gusting into the 80’s. That’s abnormal for this time of year but not for March.

You can pull up a map online of where the avg wind speed in the state is the highest. Around Cheyenne seems to be the worst.

I considered moving to Casper for the cheap real estate a couple of years ago but decided the wind and dry was too much. I'm in Oregon and I'll take the rain any day every day over wind, tho WY is very beautiful on camera. The politics here are horrible and the cities are legit Sodom and Gomorrah but the coast and mountains are bliss. Y'all probably have no tent cities popping up out there LOL! Your wind is a good deterrent.

Just a nice breeze, it isn't windy in Wyoming until it's over 70mph. I always have to laugh at the tourists who, when the wind is blowing 20 or 25 mph, will ask if it's always "this windy" in Wyoming... I simply respond, "Windy? This isn't windy. This is just a gentle breeze."

I have lived in the Tri State area most of my life and claim Wyo as home. Lived in Gering until 82, then to Eastern Wyo for HS, Casper for college and work, short stint in AZ then Ellsworth AFB, FE Warren and lots of TDYs to various missile bases. We get the wind something awful in WY compared to other states even though it blows there too. Rapid City was the banana belt in my humble opinion. Platte County e.g. Wheaterville and Slater is like a wind tunnel. I know it quite well. Especially evening maintenance dispatches to get a Launch Facility back on alert or the security system back up and the SF team released from physically keeping eyes on sight. The 400th missile squadron was the worst. Malmstrom AFB got it bad too with wind. Now I just gripe in Cheyenne and say the wind doesn't blow here, Nebraska SUCKS!!😂😂
