In Plato’s Republic, the character of Thrasymachus argues that injustice is more profitable and advantageous for oneself than justice. Socrates argues against this focusing on crafts, factions, functions, virtues, and the soul. This is the concluding argument in Book I of the Republic that leads into the group getting into other philosophical discussion.

this is starting to sound like it has something in common with Rawl's definition of justice. I first thought they were far in between. Anyone want to chime in?

Thrasymucus seems correct here. I need to hear more details on Socrates’ position. Nero and Trump have proved thrasymucus correct so far it seems.

Socrates' response I think is what is more advantageous is determined by the goal of life, if the goal of life is to be just then the unjust may have seeming success but ultimately they're missing out. There's a good audio of dialogue between Socrates and Alcibiades on KZbin.

If you consider the cultural implication of Greek thought to go along with it, this changes dramatically. To the Greek mind, immortality is achieved only by living a life worth remembering forever, and should be full of glory, not infamy. Consider this: The one who is seen as glorious and just by all is renowned eternally, and never has to watch one's back. Nero on the other hand lived in paranoia his whole life, fearing assassins or enemies from all corners. He was most decidedly unhappy with his life; perhaps in the end death was even a relief for him. Look at Trump, and you see much the same thing. Disdain for his most ardent followers, suspicion and fear of his peers, and permanently enraged and at risk of losing everything he ever had. Same goes for the likes of Putin and etc. Compare that to say Cincinnatus, who retired to his farm after wielding dictatorial powers in order to save the Roman Republic. Revered by all, content with his life, and famous to this very day as a paragon of an ideal ruler. Which one in the end lived a more fulfilling life?

@@BasilissaDalasseneMaybe the reason Trump faces any negativity is because the elite owned media has brainwashed the mindless consumers of today that he is the next reincarnation of Hitler. He didn’t have to seek the presidency, he reached the top of success before and still decided to take on the role. Who are you to say he doesn’t feel fulfilled with life?
