Let me give a sports analogy. If Jordan (in his prime) said "I'm #1" and decided to sit out every time he played against Bird, Magic, Isiah, etc he would be disqualified. Cant say you're number 1 if don't compete when challenged. Cole is great but this disqualifies him and will follow him forever. Everytime he jumps on a record and says "I'm number 1" or "I'm the greatest" he will get clowned by majority of hip hop fans. It's all good that he regrets it and he doesn't want to go back and forth and have friendly competition but that #1 talk he's been doing, he should probably cut it out. Say you are just one of the nicest and leave it at that

We’re not about to go back and forth with a Rosenberg about OUR hip hop! Our culture! All of a sudden we want to baby Cole just bc he took the cop out! When the last time Cole and Kendrick spoke? They’re not “friends”! Now this is Cole’s job and when you’re called to do your job, your boss expects you to show up?! There are no exceptions or you’re fired. Why is there an exception here? Put those feelings aside and do your job bc no one told cole to jump out there. He’s disqualified for being the greatest bc he has not defended his title…the man tucked his tail before KL could even finish listening to the diss 😆.

As an independent artist as someone who loves hip-hop, and has been a fan since MC Hammer… What J. Cole did was like somebody punching you and then you hit them back and apologize for hitting them back … Hip-hop was born in the streets… it’s truly about being the best and true to what you’re talking about! Apologizing to a rapper that attacked him first, when all he talks about is being the best rapper and daring someone to test him; then when it happens he bows out… that’s a contradiction in itself. The Thing about hip-hop, once you lose credibility ain’t no getting it back

This is certainly the most nuanced discussion on the topic. Thank you for this. Very fair on both sides. He made a mistake, and i do agree itd be best if Cole just laid back and said "Nah, I'm not pickin a side, I'm cool with both of you." But hindsight is 20/20 at the end of the day.

Man, J. Cole has been saying in his lyrics for the last three years. Ask him what has happened to hip-hop and competition in real hip-hop and then he goes off makes a diss track towards Kendrick Lamar and then apologizes. J. Cole you just gave the reason what is wrong with hip-hop and what is happening to real MC‘s and real competition. I love J. Cole as an artist, and as a rapper at the end of the day, but Stop saying you’re the best because you just bow out and also you’ve been asking in your lyrics for the last 2-3 years what has happened to hip-hop competition. Those are in his lyrics.

Kendrick didn’t have a problem with Cole saying he was the best until he linked up with Drake. Cole been saying “only man above me is God himself, all these other niggaz is below me” since Forbidden Fruit in 2013”. He did it again on Forrest Hills and Kendrick never approached him. What we have to acknowledge is there’s a dynamic we have to pay attention to which is Cole being stuck in the middle of two of his friends that have real tension between them. Him clapping back at Kendrick (with the Energy sample) makes it look like he chose sides. That extends well beyond just friendly competition.

Thats very true, but i cant front if i was cole i still would have kept going because if him and Kendrick really cool, then he didnt need to apologize and if they really cool then they would still be cool afterwards...maybe cole should have found out if Kendrick was going at him or drake first because then he could have just sat out instead of responding in the first place

As an emcee when your skills and position are questioned or you are called out by someone as good if not better than you. You defend yourself, stand your ground, strike back, prove your lyrical superiority, and compete. This is the way that Hip Hop culture has always worked, why are we now moving the goalposts because modern rappers are overly sensitive?

3 reasons you can't disqualify drake 1.) he defends himself when challenged. Drake is sooo petty. He's been in the ring 3 times. Drake still has issues with so many rappers. He makes a song about dogs, says one slick line about Future and moves on. Drake been talking slick to kendrick for the past 6 years. 2.) This whole thing is because of Drake. People linking up choosing sides. This whole thing circulates around Drake. He is the main character. 3.) When it comes to hip-hop it's Drake, kendrick and Cole. When it comes to music overall it's Beyonce, Taylor Swift and Drake. Thats why you can't disqualify Drake.
