Lana Wachowski , Keanu Reeves, and Carrie-Anne Moss return for the fourth Matrix film, Resurrections. We were cautiously optimistic in the lead-up, but does this film reinvigorate the franchise, or should it have been left in the ground?

The problem is that The Matrix as a franchise was always about symbolism first & put being a movie second. This plot was just a flimsy way to tie all of the metaphors together. You guys touched on some of the themes, like humans willing to trade freedom for comfort, unlikely alliances borne out of circumstance, corporate greed, etc.

Exactly, I love how much the film takes the message and philosophy of the past films and makes it unavoidable, makes it the most important part of the movie, just plain in defiance of the concept that there needed to be a new one at all.

I think the movie was great. It really picks up a lot of the points from the original series and continues them in logically ways with the working of man and machine together and how sentience can make those relationships more complicated as well as the evolution of The One narrative and how it was always a contribution of multiple characters instead of just one as the prophecy was always a lie meant to control them. It portrays the trauma of a man being gaslit into oblivion by a system working of it's own interests very well. I feel like a lot of the criticism comes from people who didn't get what the original films were truly about disappointed because they didn't get more of the things that were merely surface in the ways they wanted.

At least "The Matrix: Resurrections" isn't another rehash/reboot like what the 'Terminator' franchise is doing, they just kept going until it finally fell flat by the time 'Dark Fate' killed john connor in the opening scene🤣 I kinda loved the world building Lana Wachowski gave us , even though it can get boring with too much explanation and exposition of sorts.... and the Synthients are sooo cute , particularly sati's bot 'Kujaku' ❤❤❤🥰🥰🥰 Perhaps there's time to improve upon a sequel , if it happens of course 😅

Because both Neo and Trinity died at the end of the trilogy, Resurrections needed to open showing more of their resurrection by the machines. Similarly, a more fleshed-out depiction of the 'Machine civil war' that happened between Revolutions and Resurrections would have added the much-needed context that the current film was so obviously lacking. Not having more of the original actors or its original darker cyberpunk feel to instead replace it with a campy atmosphere throughout, led to that feeling we're all having over what was a landmark example of film making turned corporate mess, the very thing the original film stood against. Heard there's a sequel. Maybe we’ll eventually discover the entire Resurrections film was just another one of Neo’s dreams from safe within his pod. That would explain the disjointed, dream-like campy theme to Resurrections and allow the next film to be the real Matrix outside of the modal that was created not by Neo, but the (original) Architect. The line in Resurrections where Neo says "I've had dreams that weren't just dreams," as well as what the Analyst tells him about his current "reality" are strong clues. This would also mean Lana played with all our minds. It’s we that were in the Matrix within a Matrix in Resurrections. We dreamt Neo's dream. By the next film, I fully expect Neo to wake up from that dream to again become the One he still is and is still becoming.

@phaldaz
@phaldaz 2 жыл бұрын
Remember, the 'One' or the concept of the 'One' does NOT exist, this is true since Matrix 2. Instead their is only the anomaly, and Neo is the anomaly of anomalies since he effectively ends the path of the One With this in mind, the power of Neo being seen in Trinity (like flight) is a power of the anomaly and NOT the one. The Oracle effectively made Neo's anomaly value Trinity over Humanity by feeding Trinity some specifics prophecies + saying she will end up 'loving the One' etc etc. So since then she took the role of one and split into two TLDR. Stop saying the “One" that was all false, all their is is the anomaly and the power that comes with it. The Oracle ends up splitting it from 2 to 1 person long term. So you won't ever be shocked seeing Trinity have this power long term

Ironic that the movie got a binary reception. Resurrection is several stories playing out at the same time 1. the matrix story 2.the reloaded story 3.the revolutions story 4.the resurrection story 5.the story of the making of resurrections 6. The Story of the matrix fan told through bugs eyes. This story is essential about us, the matrix fans 7. The Lana Story, If we take the lana story playing out in the matrix, we see that on the one hand, she achieves her goal, warner will never bother her about making another matrix. the story of the matrix fan as seen through the eyes of bugs and her crew, this is the most interesting story because it is the story of us, and Lana has made the fans and their ideas of the matrix a part of the story. Thus handing the baton to the fans to recreate the matrix as they see fit. This is a lesson in master story telling from lana. vieomes review The matrix resurrection is the best movie ever made. What I mean by that is that is better than the first matrix movie. How can that be you ask? Well think of it like this, the first matrix movie ask the question "what is the matrix." The reloaded story asks the question, how does the matrix work. The revolutions story asks the question can the matrix be changed. Matrix resurrection however is more of a guide, a how to, if you like. How to do what, you ask. How to respond to the question asked in the revolutions story and at the same time bringing peace, to all the red pills connected to the story. Bringing peace to Lana, bringing peace to all the matrix storys, by revealing the final piece to the puzzle. Lana's story Lana used to be a women but now she is a man. Wait did I get that right. Actually, does it really matter, who she used to be, what matters is that she is. A women of brillance, of radiating light, she is like our trinity, our oracle, our morpheus, because she not only, showed us the door to the matrix, she gave us the key, on how to use it, that mirror universe. She let us know, that the key to the matrix, is now with some matrix fan. One of us. Did you find the key in resurrections. The key in that place, that no one ever goes. The matrix fan story You all know my story, its all I have ever told from back in the day, when I first connected to the internet. My first analogue book, you know the blank one, was called hello world. Did you notice that one of the analyst books is called blank slate, it made me think of my first book. I run a youtube channel, which is slowly getting popular and through which I have connected to over 1000 minds. Now I am connected with yours, which reminds me of a joke from Ross of friends, in which he says we interfacing. I know its a stupid joke, but what the hell, it is very funny. I never thought peace was possible, but it is on its way, and it is as sweet as a red strawberry. Because most of you did not trully understand the resurrections story, you will no doubt have a hard time understanding my review of the movie. So lets go back to the matrix, in the first matrix we learn what the matrix is, you know, the computer blah blah, the choice of red pills blah blah blah. In the second matrix, we learn how the matrix works, the cause and effect, the world without time, the no choice thing. Left in limbo for while, or perhaps to give you time to watch, the animatrix. The third matrix shows us how to change the matrix, that sacrifice of the one. Even though we do not believe in the one. No one in the matrix believes in the one, the only person who believes he is the one, is Trinity. She believes Neo is the one, because the oracle programmed her, to love the one and who does she love. Whoa! Do you trully believe Neo was the one? You dont do you? Let me put it another way, if our world was the matrix, and some random dude, starting claiming he was the one. You would not believe him, I would not believe him. That tells me that people in the matrix universe do not believe in the one. Thus Niobe never ever believed in the one. She met Neo and believed in him, because he was a wizard in the matrix, you know that flying thing. Without resurrections would we not have known this. Can I be honest with you, its feels like I spent most of time, exploring the matrix universe, through the wrong rabbit hole. In the matrix rabbit hole there is another seperate rabbit hole, I think we can call it the resurrections rabbit hole. As Jude would say, its a beautiful day, when you finally find the key, to the matrix resurrections. Or I imagine, if we go back in time, to the first matrix, that trinity would say, it is the key and it will find you if you .... .. ..(finish the sentence). So you want to paint the bio sky with rainbows? I know each one of you, now it is time, for you to know me. I am the biggest matrix fan. If my life was a science fiction movie, my story would say , that I cracked the matrix database. But of course, in real life, I have not done much. Apart from the 7 seven matrix books I wrote, I have been busy staring at the screen. I do a bit of gardening everday, I guess just to connect with nature. I really am, just an average person. Very shy, even in terms of the internet. Did you find the key?

37:10 I thought the same thing about this Smith at first. But if you think back to the OT, Smith actually did evolve into a much less robotic, machine-like character. He ended up becoming kinda cocky and sassy, like he's shown in this movie. But still, I felt like they leaned into that a too much. He should feel like a machine trying to be human-like, but he just felt 100% human. Kinda the same with Morpheus. I had no problem with how this movie portrayed him conceptually, but it just feels like neither of those characters worked because the movie has the wrong tone throughout the whole thing. Never achieved the sort of grim and heavy tone that a Matrix movie should have.

Big fan of the Matrix, I was there opening night. Although I was excited to watch a new Matrix movie I definitely tempered my expectations. It wasn't good and a lot of people are trying to make the comparison to the second and third Matrix movie but I would say this fourth installment is much worse. I enjoyed Matrix 2 and 3, even if the story did kinda fall apart by the end of 3 the action was still good, the music was good, it still had style, acting (the characters sold their lines- even if what they were saying was a bit corny out of context) and characters were all there. In this new movie the action was completely generic which is a huge part of what made the matrix cool. The actors used to replace Hugo Weaving and Laurence Fishburne just couldn't fill these big shoes (even if I do like these actors otherwise). The new characters were mostly forgettable (I like Bugs) and while they definitely some sort of style, it was more quirky rather than cool. Looking back at the Matrix, yes the attire is funny now but at the time it was pretty fucking cool. The whole movie felt like it was made by someone who really didn't want to be making a Matrix movie and I don't see how you could be a fan of the original 3 and also like this movie.

Totally agree, this movie wasn't even close to 2 and 3. It never achieved the sort of grim and heavy tone that a Matrix movie should have, didn't say anything new. Apparently, they didn't have hardly any time with Keanu for practicing fight choreography (because of John Wick 4), and that's why he does nothing but force push over and over again. There were a handful of elements that could have worked, but overall it just didn't.

Some people have said this is like a fan made film and I have a tendency to agree. Don't even mention the Stormtrooper aim accuracy, they didn't even try to hide it by arranging characters movements to find cover or avoiding line of sight like they did in the originals. I've seen the film 3 times now and I still can't unsee it. I really enjoyed the scenes with Bugs and some of Neo's but it really did seem like he was old and frail in the action scenes or the Kung fu was just badly choreographed which was totally iconic in the originals. It was said that this version of the Matrix was based on both Neo and Trinity's shared power. The problem was that Neo had absolutely no confidence in himself, it had been metaphorically beaten out of him for many years. He has so much self doubt that he can't initially fly.

The Matrix was made into a game so that people who realized they were in the simulation would be written off as mentally ill and get therapy convincing them to stay like Neo. As to the mirror thing, when it comes to rendering, chrome is the easiest to render technically, that's why back in the day the T 1000 was so easy to make convincing, hence why covering a person in chrome becomes creepy as the texture rendering of the shader instructions being served to the brain's visual cortex or GPU is breaking down as the character's signal inputs are being disrupted by the red pill.

This movie did what Obi Wan Kenobi tv show is trying to do with Obi wan character. Maybe it’s because Kenobi is recent on my memory and it’s so bad that I feel like this movie is a masterpiece in comparison, but as far as where a 4th installment would go- this was a decent enough stepping stone

Having only seeing the 1st matrix before seeing resurrections yesterday, I saw it as average but can easily tells fans of the trilogy would be disappointed. It almost felt like the movie was divided into 5 chunks with separate script writers and they adapted it afterwards with a shoe string plot to tie it all together. There's no way anybody (fan or not) could consider this perfection! Trust me, skip the cinema and maybe if you are a huge fan of the originals, maybe consider not watching it!

There were new messages/themes in this movie. One was a commentary on our world today in which people want to ignore facts when it doesn't suit them and live in their own comfortable realities instead. To me that has everything to do with the politics and eager consumption of misinformation that is going on these days. Another related theme was the humans and machines working together; two sides that were previously bent on destroying each other, but some realized that neither could move forward like this, that this was unsustainable. To move forward, they needed to lower the tribal walls enough to work together with those who were willing. This, to me, was about our current political climate, our increasing divisions and hatred. Also, regarding the meta stuff, IMO they weren't being meta for meta's sake, they were expressing their frustration that the original Matrix trilogy was packed full of messages/themes/metaphors but people either didn't get the message or they chose to ignore it because they were only interested in the action scenes / bullet time. They were also complaining about what people were wanting out of a 4th Matrix film (nostalgia, and the next bullet time). Which is why in this movie they go on to explain one of the main themes of the original trilogy, which was that humans (like machines) are often stuck in their own programming loops, often unable to break free of the programming instilled in them by society/culture/upbringing/etc. We should question what is taught to us as reality, question our programming; only then can we become who we really are, instead of simply another manufactured product shaped by outside societal/cultural influence/programming. It irks me that the reviews I've seen so far completely ignore or don't see these relevant themes, because I personally found it very satisfying to see these ideas expressed on the big screen. I guess they should've put in more bullet time, give the people who think they own this thing they didn't build what they're clamoring for.

So what I’ve gathered from both people’s comments and reviews is that you have to see this movie in 1 of 2 ways… either it’s a bad matrix movie, or it’s Lana’s cynical big middle finger to the cinema industry… neither of those are good options 🤷‍♀️.. I still enjoyed some great moments of this movie and I really don’t see why a GREAT point couldn’t have been made while actually caring about the quality of the filmmaking and story telling :/

Absolutely. Watched the movie again just to confirm this. You can see the film as a big middle finger to you as a fan. Or as the sad watch where you actually feel like you're in Thomas's/Lana's shoes. Neo was a god and now he's reduced to this and he totally fell for it. The story is told as if you're a confused Thomas Anderson remembering who he was. Not Neo on the verge of being woken up again. The Analyst really killed all the significance of Neo's life. Made his life a sad joke. And by extension the original trilogy that we loved. The movie was way darker and you feel got Neo, Trinity, fuckin even Smith.

Were they even in the Matrix? I thought the idea was that this was a personal modal window built on the Matrix front-end specifically for Neo. Hence why Morpheus and Smith look/act different as part of the routine. (The Merovingian is from an older version of the Matrix so it's reasonable to assume he crept his way into Neo's modal to hide). The newbies (Bugs & crew) were hacking into this modal, and what Bugs saw prior (when she saw the old man fly off the roof) was Neo glitching -the- Matrix in previous escape attempts. In the modal window where Neo resides, his personal Matrix, Trinity is "The One."

@@TheyreJustMovies Another thing that makes me think so are the mirrors being the new telephones for transportation in-and-out of "The Matrix." Like it's a reflection of the real thing, but isn't since it's a custom modal for Neo. Smith even smoked a cigarette as a callback to his merging with the Oracle. I could just be trying to justify it. I thought the story was nearly as good as the first Matrix, just fell (very very) flat on the action scenes. I liked the sequel-strategizing, how Lana used that to poke fun at everyone who thought the Matrix could be boiled down to a single meaning or message. Smith being his boss, Morpheus being an agent...it all played out like Neo's dreaded office cubicle life again. And just like before, he sought to and eventually broke free of the modal to help humanity and the machines find peace once again. It definitely felt like a re-telling as you guys suggested, but I thought Lana did an excellent job aside from the dreadfully awful action.

The color correction could have helped. The Matrix should have stayed green and the modal should have been a different color. But no, everything looks like Guardians of The Galaxy in this movie, it doesn't matter if it is the Matrix, the Modal or the real World.

The problem with the trinity retcon is that while you could fit the prior narrative to the new movie, the narrative reasons for why Neo was “resurrected” by Trinity, doesn’t support that. The prophecy set it up as, trinity loves the one, and she loves Neo, so Neo coming back to life proves that the prophecy is correct because she loves him. It’s not about her having special powers. Now it’s possible that they were thinking Trinity had special powers all along but they never signalled that so it feels cheap and looks like stupid Wokism affecting the story 20 years after the fact.

I liked this better than the last two but was disappointed. I was hoping to leave this with the same feeling as the first one where I doubted reality and immediately had to study the philosophies behind it. They could have cut in recent discussions of simulation theory or broke the fourth wall or gone the inception route to do this but they didn't. I like the part about the Matrix being a video game but I think they should kept it a movie and then they could have played on the blue pill aspect and tell Thomas his name is Keanu and he is a famous actor because he took the blue pill. Then they could have shown some John Wick or Point Break footage and really put the audience in the movie. They also could have leaned into the real world Matrix that allows the 1% to control the rest of us - political/media/corporate corruption, monopolies, mass psychosis inducing advertising algorithm s, psy ops, propaganda, dopamine addiction, conflicts of interest, tribalism, etc. They could have done so much with this especially during this time in history. 6/10 Missed opportunity.

I liked it. I feel like there are definitely some odd choices but it isn't that far off from 2 and 3 in design. I feel like people that are critical of how much talking and explaining there was in this movie forgot how much excessive talking and explaining there was in 2 and 3. I think the Matrix is a weird franchise where basically everybody loves the first which makes people think they love the franchise, but really they only like that movie and the "franchise fans" of the matrix are the only people to really like 2, 3 and 4. And that is okay, but it leads to lots of very negative people reviewing matrix 4, while really only wishing it was as good as they thought 1 was, disregarding how the franchise went.
