51:00 that was really cool. I'm a doctor and was really surprised that everything that "actor" was saying was medically perfect. Really caught my attention that moment

I love David's way of subtlety nudging Riley to his perspective "you know the moment that got me, and maybe it got you" (9:49). A wink afterwards would probably be too obvious.

This remains one of my favourite films. I saw it when it was first released in the UK (I am that old) and can confirm that the boardroom scene with the ED-209 was definitely in the cinema release. The crazy “I’d buy that for a dollar” ad segments still make me laugh.

Not only is it the same guy from the Matrix in the bar in Attack of the Clones but when Anakin gets distracted by an attractive woman it's the same actress that plays the lady in the red dress that distracts Neo in the training simulation.....which that guy's character programmed👌

btw, when this movie came out that Ford Taurus WAS a futuristic looking car. We had never seen that matte black paint job before either.

I still remember as a kid, my dad a I went to a videoshop and he aaked me to pick any movie, and i saw this robot and chose it, then my mom and i watched it on a Saturday and she occassionally covered my eyes 👀 . It was such an awesome movie. I was just awestruck. It was actually a rock solid memory.

Oh, by the way, ED 209 might be a reference to the Bell 209 helicopter, known militarily as the AH-1 Cobra gunship.

Thanks for another fun review guys. You 3 (+Sarah) make this channel/pod one of my most anticipated bits of the week. I love you Riley. I have to say though I miss the good old days when you reviewed movies rationally and objectively instead of some of the recent reasons that I honestly don't understand. "Movies need to have a positive moral message or I am not going to like it" "I am not going to enjoy a movie about a mafia family because of.. the mafia part.. because mafias are bad" "My mind and feelings were not titillated". To be clear, I genuinely think disliking a beloved movie is absolutely fine. Provided you come to that conclusion based on a detailed analysis of its highs and lows objectively. However, these mentioned reasons essentially eliminate any unbiased and objective possibility of reviewing something based on its merits and what that movie/filmmaker is trying to accomplish. Please note this is not hating or anything here. Just expressing what I disagree with and what I miss about a part of this forum.

Just here to tell everyone to WATCH EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE! In a theatre. DO IT. Disappointed it wasn't this week's review but since I am lucky enough to live where there is the early release it's probably a good thing to give more people a chance to see it in wide releases first.

The reason that "Robocop" does the gun twirling and poses is because "Murphy" made it a point to learn the twirling to imitate the main character from his son's favorite show. Edit: I should have waited for the end of the show to comment, y'all did finally make a reference to this 😅 my bad

The scene where the guy gets shot multiple times in the boardroom was in the original VHS release. I know because I saw it when I was 8 and that was one of the scenes that gave me nightmares. I'm pretty sure it was also in the theatrical release as they were supposed to be the same version of the film. However there may have been later cuts where the scene was extended.

My fav part of this is when James went Dutch on Riley. =) LMG Clips material for sure. Also, the Ford Taurus, at the time, was groundbreaking as far as aerodynamic design and body panel manufacturing (their shapes). The car was quite alien looking compared to everything else before it. The car was not really known when it was shown on screen for the first time. By today's and even 20 years ago, the design is laughably ugly. I do admit that! =) I even drove one right into the ground. Terribly good car.

So glad you guys watched this. This is one of my all time favorite movies. It's just so beautifully comic book level of theme, tries to ground itself in America.. playing itself somewhat serious. And completely makes fun of action movies and modern America at the same time. It's such a silly movie with a lot of depth and a lot of bad ass action.

I think his run through Robocop, Total Recall, Basic Instinct, Showgirls and finishing on Starship Troopers is one of the great directorial runs. You can definitely see them as a director selling out to Hollywood - but they've outlived the vast majority of their peers in our memories, and all had a bit of subversion that still makes them interesting. Afterwards he went back to 'proper cinema' with Black Book and Elle and got the plaudits, but I'd love one more R-rated populist film from him.

~11:30 - I didn't watch this one in the theaters (was too young), but I'm pretty sure I've watched on TV in probably '89 or '90 and saw the boardroom guy getting totally riddled with bullets. So, I don't know, but it's weird that they wouldn't show that in the theater. And that cut was probably the one in the VHS too. But I mean, maybe that info was in the DVD/Blu-ray commentary, so...

Freaking love this movie. It's one of my all time favorites as well as my ringtone (go ahead and judge). And, as far as I know, it's one of the few 'comic book characters' where the movie came before the comics. The movie was the origin of RoboCop. I think they may have done this with Meteor Man as well. I'm not sure. But this movie rocked as well in its' own cheesy way. Not to mention the massive roster of stars making appearances in it.

45:41 i feel like that actually fits. i remember seeing movies in the 80 that had some old as cop and normal cars. i feel like the police back then - and like in the movie - didnt have the amounts of money they do now. thats why there are so many calls to defund the police.

The Ford taurus was picked for a very specific reason above other cars. As James mentioned, at the time America was making incredibly shitty cars and the Ford taurus was the first American response to Japanese cars that worked. It looks very boring now, but it's because it was the car that broke the old mold and set the foundation for what American cars look like after. If you watch some reviews when it first released there are people who even say it looks futuristic! So while it seems very silly now (and even knowing this when I watched it for the first time a few years ago it still made me laugh) it was very on point for the time

I know ya'll dont like series reviews all that much but please consider doing the Halo series on paramount plus once it is finished (its 9 episodes for season 1, already renewed for season 2. They release on Thursdays. Episode 3 was just aired this week). I know some of you are halo fans, and as a halo fan myself I find myself wrestling a lot with it. I don't expect good reviews from yall but theres still plenty of time left in the season. Cheers!

The movie would not be fun if they included people's realistic reactions to violence. The tone would be ruined and the humor would become inappropriate and the viewer would feel uncomfortable watching it.

I've got the Criterion version lying around somewhere, and seem to remember hearing on the documentary that Verhoeven didn't want to do the stupid film (and it is the stupidest of titles), until his wife pointed out it was actually a modern interpretation of Frankenstein. Bit of a stretch, but actually does actually have some resonance (and you too can bring this up, whenever Robocop is mentioned). Oh and the theme f'in slaps - kzbin.info/www/bejne/jmeupYGwj7aBbtU&ab_channel=joseluis Here's an orchestra playing it.

New robocop was OK... Not great.. It was a tired and used up genre... Probably people would like 'upgrade', 'the machine', and 'ex machina'... Similarly 'transcendence' was also a weird movie.. So was 'infini' .. It had all the alien vibes but it was different.. I really should stop binge watching movies..

Do a review of the Robocop 2014. It's super underrated because butthurt fans didn't like it since it's different from the original. But in my opinion it's a perfect movie and much much more better than the original, since it explains the backstory and everything in details.
