As a current owner and hardcore enthusiast of “honest restorations” I get an absolute thrill out of driving and showing my 1925 Star! It’s thrilling to me that I get the privilege driving a car that is almost a century old! With that said though, I absolutely could not keep working on my project without other car enthusiasts tearing theirs apart! I have found all of the spare parts that I’ve ever needed but only because I’ve know people that were hot-ridding their car and I bought the original parts off of them. Also their ingenuity and creativity is what keeps car culture moving forward! I love this build and I love watching all of your videos when they come out.

I'm British and in the UK. I bought my 1958 car as a hand-painted turd with a decomposed interior. So I restored it as a racing car from that era: a stripped interior, racing stripes and decals, everything more or less authentic to how a '58 racer would be. It was cheaper than a back-to-original restoration, and saved me enough money for a tuned engine and disc brakes. There's a nutter who regularly shouts abuse at me because he claims I ruined the car. My car, my money, my choice. Plus he's a d*ckhead. Keep good original cars original. If it's a wreck, do what you want.

God no, this is why historic buildings are being demolished at a speed not seen since the 60's here in Belgium. Some people have all the money and no appreciation for historic stuff. I have seen people throw away perfectly good engines for electric conversions, and this in cars where the engine is one of the defining features of the car, like the two stroke in an old saab or trabant, or the boxer in a 2CV. I get an electric conversion when a car is missing an engine, or it's a fairly common classic car (like the 2Cv or trabant) with an engine that needs a lot of work (and even then, at least sell the engine instead of throwing it on the scrap heap). I guess you also think you should be allowed to mutilate roman statues, like Pope Pius IX did, or destroy historic buildings like the volkshuis, like the city of Brussels did in the 60's.

The Mk 5 is a type of car that was intended to convey a well heeled owner with no fuss or noise, but also to be able to assert its authority. It was a status symbol. It remains largely what it was with your treatment. It is now as quiet as the designers wished for and it has to power to stomp when it needs to. I really admire this piece of work. and would love to be conveyed in it.

"What amount of mod is OK" is just about as much a religious question as "What oil do you use". You may be surprised, but I'm actually the kind of guy that appreciates stock, unmodified cars MUCH MORE than modded cars - be it performance tuning, or optical modifications, hot-rodding etc. Still, I'm here, and I really love the project you're doing. Why? Because you're doing a DAMN FINE JOB! You don't just take out the angle grinder, chop the top off, remove the fenders and throw a V8 in the front, no. You plan way ahead, consider many different approaches, use and demonstrate techniques and technology that I've never even heard of, document it in a detailed, professional and humorous manner and deliver a top notch result. And you even made another Jag driver happy by giving him the old engine out of yours! Keep doing what you're doing - and be it s**ing l**g t***ge in college, I don't care. You rock!

@helplmchoking
@helplmchoking 2 жыл бұрын
Different kind of ruining though, right? Like that's making it not fit for purpose (assuming that purpose is to move, which it might not be). Hell, I'd argue leaving a car in a shed to quietly rot for 30 years is even closer to ruining it! It was never designed to rust away and now it can't even move, AND no one gets to drive, hear or see it! It's a lose lose! In all fairness, I don't even think crazy low cars are 'ruined' since they're doing what they're meant to do (be stationary and look cool), just have fun

Hey! I just discovered you and your JAAAG through this video. I absolutely love the idea of converting classic cars to EVs! Here's why: there are a LOT of old, beautiful shells or broken down classics that would deserve to be driven around daily to just be looked at but aren't, because restoring cars and keeping them driving is a fucking headache. I'll take classic cars being driven around more often and being able to look at some absolute stunners instead of them sitting in a garage or shed for 340 days of the year. The sheer possibility of having classic cars being just as usable as you average Tesla one day gets me absolutely giddy. So don't listen to the weird gatekeepers, they have less character than unsalted tortilla chips. Keep up the interesting work, you're doing something really amazing.

I've gotten some really puzzled looks, luckily no hate, for removing fender skirts and fancy trim from my rides. Also running non-factory paint colors and modernizing interiors. I don't care, though. "when is it ok to ruin a classic?" long story short? the day you bought it in full Long story? Well, see video above. It will always be "a shame" to alter a classic car simply out of respect of the venerable because, even if in a sorry state, that car has managed to survive until today, but the moment you own a car you own it and you have full authority on what to do with it which, in many cases, often leads to you using it more often than you would if you left it intact or renovated it with original parts. Personally I'm a fan of "old but modern", replacing anything original with contemporary counterparts while preserving the looks which is both cheaper and more convenient in price and parts replacement. I go with the argument of "you didn't buy a vintage car because you wanted to experience the joys of fighting with an old clunker, you wanted it for the looks" which sounds reasonable at least to me but still it's quite a rare trend to see for anything that goes back farther than the 70's. I still enjoy heavier do-overs but it's rare to see enthusiasts on that side of the opinion who don't end up botching it, you're one of the good ones.

I stumbled on your channel while researching megesquirt ECUs and watched your videos about them then binge watched the whole series of videos about the s600 because I love strange motor swapped cars, I have been following along with the Jag build and I personally agree with all your choices so far except for the wheels but to me wheels are and always have been super subjective so I say put whatever wheels makes you happy on the car style wise. I do however have a distaste for heavily stanced cars and squatted trucks etc because IMHO it is actively hindering the performance by overdoing something to an extreme, but I will never consider a car ruined by objective improvements to things like brakes and suspension (for comfort or performance) and I also believe people can do whatever they like to their cars so long as it doesn't cause a public safety issue even if it isn't what I would have done.

I'm supposed to be working on my 1974 trashed camper trailer, but I have a nasty cold, so what better to do than binge watch a whole series of SuperfastMatt videos? This one really hits home for me. I know almost nothing about cars, other than how to make them make it from one location to another, but I used to repair and refurbish a particular old film camera: The Graflex Speed Graphic. Usually the 4x5 Pacemakers, but sometimes the 2x3, and sometimes older models. Most folks here have probably never heard of them, but they were once THE camera used by American press photographers, and they're the camera you typically see in old movies, the ones with bellows on them, and big flash handles (later used by George Lucas to make light sabers). I got quite good at repairing /refurbishing these cameras, and sold them on eBay. I never had a KZbin channel, but folks reached out through eBay to let me know how glad they were that someone was doing this, as they had fond memories of these well-made things. These comments usually came from folks who bought the cameras, but sometimes people just reached out with compliments. Then, I started making modifications to them, adding rotating backs, or enlarging the front lens opening so they could use newer, larger, more modern lenses. Two things happened: First, I sold more cameras, for higher prices; people even sent me their cameras to have me make these modifications. Second, I started getting hate mail. Not much, since there wasn't really a specific feedback system for that kind of thing on eBay. But some people felt so strongly that I was 'ruining' these old things that they had to let me know. The thing is, I liked them so much myself, and knew that, of course, no one was going to make them anymore, that I never took a working camera in good condition to do modifications to. I took two or three basket-case cameras and found a way to make one working camera out of them. I didn't have to do that, but it felt good to get out into the world again a working camera from non-working ones. And the folks who bought the modified ones seemed like they truly meant to use them, whereas those who bought the repaired ones in original condition seemed (from the few who let me know their intentions) more likely to put them on a shelf to look at. Once they bought them, that was of course up to them, but I don't like it. There are folks who might want to use them as they were meant to be used, and modern film and lenses still allow these cameras to make amazing images; better still than digital cameras, unless one wants to spend tens of thousands of dollars. But that's just my way of looking at things. Anyway, I absolutely agree that it's fine to have opinions on what it's desirable to do with old stuff no longer being made. But any use they're put to is better than having them rust away to dust, and modifying them, especially if restoring them would require pretty much re-making them, is a fine and fun idea! Telling someone they are 'wrong' regarding this kind of thing is just weird to me. Telling them they should be harmed for it? Nuts.

I keep coming back to your videos because you have a way of fixing things with solutions that someone else has already used but in a new way, while balancing cost with function/safety. I can’t afford to throw parts at everything, But with the power of Send-Cut-Send and some .30 wire, I can have power steering.

I'm a new subscriber, a Brit, classic car fan. I have also restored several classic British cars. I started following you to watch the Jag series. I love what you're doing. I ride a 95 year Matchless T4 motorcycle with 70's Yamaha brake hubs on it! Your "Jagla" project is fascinating! It's a superb way to ensure we still get these these beautiful cars on the road when petrol gets banned, which WIL happen eventually. Keep up the good work, Sir!

I love stock/factory restorations, but as a “car guy” I also like to see something different! If everyone just did the same olde same old, no innovations would ever occur. What if the guy that designed disc brakes, thought, best not move away from drum brakes, don’t want to do anything different! 😂😂 Haters will always hate. Loving this build, would be good to see it as a “sleeper” maybe it’s possible to keep the Tesla wheels, but do something with the steel ones to see the look on peoples face when you leave them standing LOL

I feel the same. I can really appreciate a meticulous restoration. Every nut and bolt, every clamp, even saving the assembly line workers notations on the inner panels. Those are a window to the past and should not be lost. HOWEVER, the weird ,crazy builds are cool 😎. Especially if you're making it better. Or saving one from the crusher. Its all part of car culture. There's something for every taste. If you don't like it, try to appreciate the work and talent that went into it. Remember what Pete Champouris said: "Any body can restore an antique. It takes a real man to cut one up." Now, what am I gonna do with that Nissan Pulsar? ...... Subscribed.

Glad you did this vid,, You did sorta change my mind..I have a 62 sunbeam and i modified a Toyota 5 speed into it (I blew the weak old overdrive) and i made it look totally stock from the outside. Your Jay Leno spot on the Honda was great and i really resonated with the idea of taking something not worth restoring and making it something better..I still hate the Tesla wheels but yeah to each his own. So cheers to you.. still think it an awesome idea to make an electric out of it.. and letting someone else use the drive train etc was a good trade off.

I love what you’re doing with the Jag. A modern take on a classic. I like the lowered roofline as well - definitely made it look faster. I do hope you’re going to do up the paintwork because it’ll definitely look a million bucks. But it’s your car - you can do or not do whatever you like.

Dude i love your video, just found the channel, i used to be restore a car to its glory kinda girl, but then i seen that how much realisticly it would cost to restore any care to glory as said yea that aint happening lol, plus i just enjoy the feel of driving an old car especially when your not having to worry about having to track down no longer made parts for a car older than dirt when it much cheaper and easier to go with new vehicle drive train, suspension and breaking components that many third part conversion companies offer or can easily moddifed to fit your existing vehicle. Honestly if more people had your out look on cars, the car culture would be a much better experience for every one.

I thought that! I was looking for a youtube video of a decent EV conversion of a lorry and had to google alternative US terms to try and find one. Strangely no luck though, I was hoping to find some kind of RV conversion which had a small 1 or 2 litre engine to charge the batteries but had a purely electric drive train but nope.

@@Spedley_2142 That's not what this joke is about :) (pedantic) What Matt has shown in the picture showing 'lorry' is a 'semi trailer truck' (as we know it too) and what he shown as the amurican equivalent is a 'pickup truck' :)

@@el_es I was pointing out how that searching for "Truck" etc in the UK (which means small lorry) gives you pictures of a daily commute in the US. What is large in the UK is medium in the US.

I used to feel guilty when making drastic changes to a car just because i worried too much about what people would think and then i got older and realized that i shouldn't care, and came to conclusions similar to yours. Also i used to want, and be impressed by exotic cars. The meaning of that has changed for me. now i want a car i design, can control every aspect of, and can call my own .. so yeah. now i don't feel alone anymore.

Did Shelby "ruin" a so-so english sports car when he created the Cobra? What's worth more now?
@brianb-p6586
@brianb-p6586 2 жыл бұрын
To be fair, if Shelby and others didn't build V8 variants of the AC Ace, those cars wouldn't have been manufactured - the Cobras are in addition to the original Ace, not instead of them. The argument from those who are upset is that there are a limited number of these old cars, so modifying one removes it from the pool of "authentic" examples.
