@@ShainAndrews not a great example though as most insurance companies would find me at least 50% at fault for that as I left it in a public place, unsecured, with the keys in it. In order for you to be totally at fault, I'd have to have locked it up and taken the keys with me. This would render it secured and obviously not for public use. Again, if the outlet is easily accessible in a public place like a parking lot, and has no security cover with locking mechanism, then they cannot charge you for theft of services. Especially since they don't have posted rates detailing the pricing on said services either. Imagine this: a water hose at a gas station. The spigot is not locked, there is no sign specifying payment for use. You fill up a water jug and go to leave, the clerk runs out and demands payment. When you refuse, they call the cops. The cops cannot do anything because the hose was readily accessible by the public, not secured, and had no signage posted requiring payment for use. Legally, you deprived the station of no goods or services. Literally the only action that could be taken is a writ of no trespass.

It is always surprising but the first 10% of your battery is often worth much more range than the last 10%. So getting out with 93% might have been your mistake :)
@SteinGauslaaStrindhaug2 жыл бұрын
Yes. Even if was measured entirely linear (which it's probably not); the first 10% from 100% to 90% are capacity you can freely use; the last 10% from 10% to 0% are percent that the system might not allow you to use. If the battery had just stopped charging when you unplug it and drive, the battery is already at the perfect temperature; this is particularly important in cold climates where the range decreases a lot if you have to start with a cold battery; so the estimated range will be a lot further even with the same charge because very little energy is needed to keep the battery warm enough. Also my 1st gen BMW i3 seems to continue charging a bit after it displays 100%; I can tell because the estimated range keeps increasing for a while even though the bar is full. I think it counts 90% of maximum charge as 100% (and probably 15% as 0%) to prevent us from wasting time and power reaching a charge level that it might never reach and might be harmful for the battery anyway.
@TheThunderwars2 жыл бұрын
@@SteinGauslaaStrindhaug I'd say that it is due to cell balancing. Once you are "100%", some cells might be a bit above 4.2v or a bit below. It is important that each cell provides the same voltage so that they are not stressed differently when in use. It makes the pack less prone to sagging, which is why when you accelerate you can see a huge voltage drop, and makes the battery cells healthier for longer.

On the plus side, you've already fabricobbled a mounting solution for the larger than necessary battery modules, so if you're willing to throw more money at the problem and open that can of worms back up, you can totally upgrade the range with the higher range battery packs.

In fairness, the biggest reason for this is that the battery is THE most expensive part of the drive system. When you're trying something new, it's hard to go "Sure, I'll spend $24,000 for a used Model S battery pack and get that 250 miles of range". Matt went BIG here. I converted a 1955 GMC truck, and the EV equipment ran me roughly $10k. If I wanted a 200 mile range, I'd LITERALLY be adding another $18k to that figure, easy. That's tough to do when you don't even know how it'll drive, whether you'll want to be in it for 10 minutes let alone 3 hours!

I’m working on an electric car using 18650s similar to the Tesla Model S. I’ve built a motorcycle, snowmobile and ATV using these same cells. I put in an “Anti Range-Anxiety Switch” that gives me the option when my BMS kicks out the power to get home. The BMS shuts off at approximately 3.0 Volts per cell. At full battery charge I know my range and amp hour usage. I know this quite accurately because I test to BMS shut off. I then use the switch to get me home. Never draining the cells below 2.7-2.8 volts. The batteries will last my lifetime 😊. I’m also implementing the switch on my car.

Lesson learned. Any EV conversion absolutely needs some kind of fast charging, even chademo

Level 2 charging is absolutely sufficient given that this is a project car. CHAdeMO is deprecated in North America as most fast chargers now use CCS 1.

The range anxiety is REAL!!! Even with my Chevy Volt, I get range anxiety, I can't imagine the stress of being mere blocks away from home without a charge. 😂

Perhaps we could start a crowd fund for a 'Mr. Fusion' reactor you could mount on the trunk of your Jag. Just imagine, a few banana peels and some empty beer cans and you would have unlimited power. Love your posts, am very happy whenever I see a new one. Thank you!!!

The contactor issue is likely a BMS over discharge fault. Pulling current through some resistance will drop the pack voltage. At some point during the drive, it’ll get too low and the BMS will open the contactors to prevent damage due to over discharge. When you let it sit for a few seconds, the power draw is gone, and the pack voltage will rise again, allowing the close of the contactors. Pretty cool to see it in action since Tesla hides it behind a wall of software protection

You should try a battery pack with a power inverter, it could be your version of a fuel can. Hell, if it works you can cut up a Jerry can and make it an official emergency "fuel can"
@djordjeblaga78152 жыл бұрын
Apparently Li-Ion has around 400Wh/L of power density. My Bosch Powerpack 400 has 400Wh and is about the size of a Water Bottle, so that fits. 20L Jerry can -> Theroretical 8kWh of energy storage. Even if you cut that in half for good measure that's nothing to sneeze at.

That 7%=zero in the post script is an important learnings for everyone with an EV I think. Normally we would assume if anything there is a slight reserve behind advertised capacity, being short changed by that much could really embarrass people. In some ways knowing exactky how much you have is more important than having bigger batteries BUT my understanding is that lithium (and many other) batteries degrade exponentially more the deeper you discharge them, literally draining the last electrons like this really bad battery care. The moral is to plan journeys so you should never go below 20% ?

Watching this while battling the low battery indicator on my wireless mouse made it an even more nerve-racking experience. Sure, I could put a new one in there (perhaps even the correct size), but I prefer the lighter weight and who's to say 1.2 something volts isn't plenty on a AAA?

@@RustyCraftKnife The thing kept flashing red for 30s after every action. That is supposed to be the low charge indicator, but the battery voltage was above that treshold, so I kept messing with it to make it read the voltage correctly.

the problem with that is, you would always be carrying around something you never actually want to use .....I realize that living out west USA(when I did) that it is pretty common to spend ~3hrs of each day behind the wheel driving; but where I live(now) I'd be visiting a whole nother state if I drove that far - and say if you lived in Europe you might end up in another country or something ... and it seems anywhere you go now in modern times, at least has power already there for light bulbs or something; but an old rusty leaking fuel can, maybe not so much

If you're in a pinch, try drafting behind a lorry (UK), truck (US). I manage to use just over 30 miles of range on my 50 mile commute in my ID3. Obviously a completely different car, but same principle. All hail the algorithm. 🤟
