Does my ostomy bag smell? 😳💩

I was too. I do notice when I CAN start to get a whiff of it, that means something is up and there’s a leak or it needs to be changed. Like someone said below, generally there’s itching and burning accompanied with it.

I have 2 bags myself and this was a HUGE concern of mine! I was more worried about the way it would look and smell than I was the actual reason I needed the procedure lol but this is 100% accurate. If you can smell it that means it's probably got a leak somewhere. Another reason it could smell is some have a really small vent that allows air to escape when it gets really full to prevent leakage or accidents

I have an ileostomy and sadly I have had my gall bladder removed so my output does smell bad. It's a problem and worse with particularly high fat spicy foods where the liver produces more bile. This goes into stomach in high amounts with no gall bladder to store bile. So sadly an ileostomy and no gall bladder do tend to smell more than normal. Only solution I have found is to use a two piece system so I can remove my bag and completely clean my baseplate and stoma with wipes and attach a new bag. It's essential to completely clean the output without having to remove the bag twice a day. Also allows for extra changes while out, after eating spicy food and to help feel more confident. Body sprays also help xx

I will be having an Ileostomy done on June 27, and I to do not have a gall bladder so this is great to know but I am really nervous about having one I have been sick for a very long time, and it finally took an emergency and two surgery four hours apart for anyone to wake up and finally do something about all this.

I love the two piece! I change my pouch morning and night and clean it all like you said. And then I only change the baseplate every 2nd or 3rd day. But clean fresh bags daily 100%

Same here . Ileostomy. No gall bladder, no uterus, fallopian tubes, womb etc - all girly bits gone, only one kidney, no bum hole, and half of a pancreas. 38 operations to date on my stomach. More to come. The minute I open the bag, ewww, the stench can last for 10 minutes even when I leave the exhaust fan on, spray air freshener etc The wind smells shocking.

They can,if you don't clean it properly. I had a drain for gallbladder removal,to drain the excess infection. That thing STANK Yes, I kept it clean.but,it did smell.not noticable to others,but still

Not true, my bag is only 1 day old and I can smell output. Nothing is open and there is no holes, rips, or detached anywhere. 😢 going to put something in it to stop the smell. Can't stand it anymore 😅

I had that same problem when using the brand of bag I was sent home from the hospital with- try different brands of bags, everyone's different in terms of body type, skin, ostomy, output, etc so just finding the right brand of bag, bag type, and types of supplies might very well be the issue! things got better for me once I figured out my own method of attaching my bag which took a bit of time and frustration, every ostomate has gone through that :). keep your chin up, things will improve for you☀️

Well when I smell my ileostomy bag when I’m not emptying or changing it it usually means I’ve started leaking somewhere on the bag and it usually comes with the itches and/or painful burning irritation. But yes, output does smell bad at times and it is worse if you have no gall bladder like me. Sometimes I am so self conscious about my ostomy. I haven’t been swimming since my ostomy. I’m askeered of swimming. I won’t even fill the bathtub up more than to barely cover my lower half, not enough full to cover the phlange (sp?).

I know it smells when it needs changing most likely because the bag is leaking or worn out or has a hole. The bag doesn't usually get a hole in it unless you do something to puncture it.

That happens with my husband all the time.. so i come with the idea of putting a piece of downy dryer sheets attached out of hes bag.. that have make him more comfortable.

Oh that is me all the time! I get my family and friends to smell me all the time. Every now and then I am sure I can smell it!! I put the sticker over the filter and that definitely helps, even if it just mentally. I’m sure it smells way less with the filter sticker on!

I was like this too and I still don’t enjoy it but I use m9 odor eliminator drops and they really do help a lot. I find I have to use more than the recommended amount it says but it really helps. It doesn’t totally eliminate the odor but definitely way better than without it. And they make spray too that you can spray after emptying.

HOW can you NOT smell an Ostomy Bag if you can smell a persons Bad Breath in the same room? They don't even have to he next to you. Halitosis smells anywhere.
