I think you have the right mind set... but I think less is ultimately going to lean toward someone who plays more like Jay lane instead of a "replacment" for herb. Put a little hop to is.. swing a little bit more. Don't be afraid to let the pocket sway a little and don't focus on the double bass stuff. You got a creative ear about you! Attack that!
